I'm Mogami. It's alright, I won't collide with anyone this time. Really!

Mogami (最上?) was the lead ship in the four-vessel Mogami-class of heavy cruisers in the Imperial Japanese Navy. She was named after the Mogami River in Tōhoku region of Japan. The Mogami-class ships were constructed as "light cruisers" (per the Washington Naval Treaty) with five triple 6.1" dual purpose guns. They were exceptionally large for light cruisers, and the barbettes for the main battery were designed for quick refitting with twin 8" guns. In 1937 all four ships were "converted" to heavy cruisers in this fashion. Mogami served in numerous combat engagements in World War II, until she was sunk at the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944.

Appearance[]

Mogami has short, blue-green hair with swept bangs, and similarly-colored blue-green eyes. (Although some artists draw her with black hair and brown eyes, making her look more Japanese.) She wears a brown serafuku with shorts, black kneehighs, and boots.

Her combat gear involves a turret with triple- or double-barreled cannons in either hand, and another pair of turrets strapped to her thighs. (The smaller-bore triple barrel cannons were exchanged for double larger-bore cannons during her kai/upgrade.) During her upgrade, she also loses a turret to gain a flight deck with three aircraft on it. In a backpack-like setup, she has a bridge and smokestack with a radar array sticking up off her mast.

Personality[]

Mogami is a frank, upbeat, energetic, and tomboyish girl. Due to having collided three times in her historic service, she's also commonly portrayed as quite clumsy, and too eager to watch where's she's going. Although all three collisions were with three different ships, collisions with Mikuma are most commonly portrayed, as she is a sister-ship, and artists tend to keep sisters in their own cliques. Because of her short, boyish hair, and wearing shorts, she is often portrayed as being either the target of rumors of being a boy, or outright portrayed as a boy.

Trivia[]

  • She speaks boyish tone, wears shorts, and has frank character.
  • Named after Mogami River. She refers to Basho's famous Haiku relevant to Mogami River (Samidare wo...).
  • Scuttled 25 October 1944 after Battle of Surigao Strait at 09°40′N 124°50′E.
