June, no one expects you to have her. They're waiting for a person, not a superhero. Even if you did get all those kids out.
~ Moira consoling June after rescuing her from Gilead.

Moira Strand is a major protagonist in the Hulu series The Handmaid's Tale, the television adaptation of the novel of the same name by Margaret Atwood.

She is a former Handmaid and close friend of June Osborne who escaped from the Red Center only to be captured and forced to work at Jezebels. She eventually escaped once again, fleeing to Canada and becoming a political activist and member of the U.S. embassy to help survivors of Gilead, eventually managing to find June in Chicago and successfully getting her out of Gilead for good.

She is portrayed by Samira Wiley.

Personality[]

Moira is shown to be one of the most active individuals in trying to defy Gilead, plotting an escape from the Red Center once she finds out what is going to happen to her and the other Handmaids. She is willing to be violent in order to escape, threatening to kill an Aunt in order to steal her outfit, and later murdering a Commander in order to escape Jezebels. During her time in Jezebels Moira showed signs of giving up, being complacent in her new position as she preferred it over being a Handmaid, even saying that reuniting with June made things worse for her as it reminded her of the past. Despite this, once she had an opportunity to escape she took it and successfully snuck out of Jezebels in order to get into Canada.

After arriving in Canada, Moira begins working as a political activist and a member of the U.S. embassy in order to help in the efforts against Gilead. She is dedicated to trying to rescue June and even violates the embassy's rules that they don't take refugees directly from Gilead in order to save her. Even though she was previously willing to kill a Commander, Moira is against pursuing further violent revenge, as seen during the Gilead support group where June and the other former Handmaids fantasize about murdering their Commanders, something that Moira dissuades and later is distraught over after June murders Fred Waterford. Moira even admits that June scares her after this, and no longer trusts her around Nichole.

Trivia[]

  • Moira's character in the original novel follows a mostly similar story to the character in the first season of the television series, eventually ending up at Jezebels, although unlike the television adaptation Moira does not escape Jezebels in the novel and presumably dies there or is sent to the colonies.
    • The decision to make Moira African American is a major deviation from the novel, where Gilead was shown to be extremely racist, a theme that the showrunners decided to drop and the author Margaret Atwood showed support for as it allowed a more diverse cast.
  • The reason for Moira be extremely out of focus in season five is likely due to her character being deceased in the novel, and that her storyline was likely meant to involve Emily Malek, who was not present in the fifth season due to her actress leaving the show.
