Momo Ayase is one of the two main protagonists (alongside Ken Takakura) of the 2021 supernatural manga series Dandadan and its 2024 anime adaptation. She is a high school student and someone who heavily believes in the existence of ghosts.
Her life began to take a different path when she and one of her male classmates, Ken Takakura agreed to each other to explore a certain location to prove that what they each other believe do exist in fact. However, both of them soon encountered what they were looking for, granting them supernatural powers.
She is voiced by Shion Wakayama in Japanese and by Abby Trott in English.
Appearance[]
Momo is a regular-looking attractive teenage girl with long brown eyes and hair, which is often parted on her right side, leaving a longer lock than her left. She also wears a pair of alien earrings on both of her ears.
Personality[]
Momo harbors a complex nature in which she sometimes acts kind but occasionally is also a jerk toward her classmates. She is fearless in facing her classmates by using her outstanding fighting prowess, although she tends to withhold most of her strength against her schoolmates, allowing herself to be beaten to avoid hurting them, which would cause an incident.
She has a crush on the actor Ken Takakura, thus dated any boy with any noticeable similarity to him, although refused to engage in any physical intimacy, as personality is important to her too, thus she can't accept losing her virginity to someone she doesn't really like. She began calling her new unlikely friend Ken "Occult student," shortened to "Okarun," because he has the same name as the actor she has a crush on, so is too embarrassed to call him by that name.
Due to being solely raised by her grandmother Saiko, she appreciates her and holds her in high regard; she gained a belief in spirits due to her grandmother being an exorcist who told her as such. As a child, she implicitly believed her grandmother's advice to ward off evil spirits with an odd hand position, however. she faced mockery from the other children. Momo derided Saiko for making her look like a fool, but truthfully, Momo was more mad at her peers for mocking her grandmother, yet couldn't process the emotions properly as a child. Despite their minor falling out, Momo remained living with Saiko and kept her belief in spirits.
Momo is incredibly strong-willed and stubborn, so can end up in escalating debates with those who challenge her beliefs or decisions, even her typically more stubborn grandmother. She is usually terrified upon facing an unknown threat, but can quickly overcome that fear as her courage builds during the confrontation. She is dedicated to her friends, with her often overcoming fear for their sake, rather than her own; even if a friend surrendered themself to oblivion, Momo refuses to give up on them, and will fight to save them.
Relationships[]
Ken Takakura/Okarun[]
She can be first seen interacting with Okarun by defending him against his classmates and asking him what he is reading. Only being given a few seconds to answer, the boy was too tense to do so, leaving Momo to criticize that it was lame. They soon engage in a dispute in which they argue the existence of what they each believe in; UFOs for Ukaru and ghosts for Momo. The conversation concludes when they both agree to explore the location that they were given to each other to find their respective entities.
Although their relationship started off as a pseudo-rivalry, the two very quickly hit it off and become friendly with eachother upon opening up to eachother. Momo and Okarun share a relationship of mutual respect and comradery, often helping out eachother when in need. Their friendship eventually started blossoming into something more, as they both started to grow mutual feelings for eachother.
Trivia[]
- Momo's dance in the anime's first opening is a direct reference to one of Barbadian singer Rihanna's dances.
- Momo wears a pair of red Jordans at the end of Episode 3 on the train.
