Monarch are the main protagonists of the MonsterVerse franchise.
Founded in 1946 by American President Harry S. Truman to investigate the sinking of the U.S.S. Lawton by a giant creature, or Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism (MUTO), Monarch soon expanded into an international worldwide organization. In 1954, it was involved in attempts to kill Godzilla and the Shinomura with hydrogen bomb detonations at Bikini Atoll. The organization's next breakthrough came in 1973, when Monarch agents attached to a Landsat expedition discovered the incredible ecosystem of Skull Island and the ancient rivalry between its guardian, Kong, and the marauding Skullcrawlers.
In 1999, Monarch assisted in the coverup of a MUTO attack on the nuclear power plant in Janjira, Japan, and studied the creature as he fed on the reactor. The MUTO emerged from his cocoon in 2014 and proved impervious to Monarch's attempts to destroy him. Godzilla confronted the MUTO in Honolulu, with the ensuing battle revealing the existence of giant monsters to the public. Godzilla ultimately killed the MUTO and his female relative in San Francisco and returned to the sea. By 2019, Monarch's existence had become public knowledge as well. The organization subsequently expanded, with at least 67 outposts around the globe. At this time, Monarch's mission had changed from hunting and containing MUTOs to discovering and protecting ancient giant creatures known as "Titans", which it believed were essential to the preservation of life on Earth. Titans under observation included Mothra in China, Rodan in a Mexican volcano, and a creature dubbed "Monster Zero", later known as Ghidorah, frozen in Antarctica.
In addition to its scientific operations, Monarch established a military branch dubbed the "G-Team" in the wake of the San Francisco incident in order to be prepared to defend humanity from monsters by force if necessary.
History[]
Godzilla: Awakening[]
Monarch was formed in secrecy in 1946 as a joint coalition between several governments in order to hunt and study massive unidentified terrestrial organisms. As revealed in events told in this graphic novel, the first two giant monsters they discovered are Shinomura (deadly hive-minded radioactive creature composed of many smaller composite lifeforms) and Godzilla (a natural radiation-empowered reptilian creature), where the former made his presence known in 1954. As Godzilla ultimately made his presence known and fought Shinomura, Monarch cooperated with the United States military to lure Godzilla and Shinomura to Bikini Atoll, where both were thought to be killed by the Castle Bravo nuclear bomb "test." The bomb killed Shinomura, whereas Godzilla survived and went to hiding. Decades later, in 1981, Serizawa told his son Ishiro about his experiences and belief that Godzilla was still alive somewhere. After Ishiro's father died, he was approached by Shaw, a representative of Monarch, who offered him the opportunity to join and continue his father's work.
Ishiro Serizawa readily agreed and became a member of Monarch.
Kong: Skull Island[]
In 1973, with Monarch in danger of losing its funding, William Randa and seismologist Houston Brooks lobbied U.S. Senator Al Willis to join a Landsat mission to the mysterious Skull Island. He dismissed their hopes of encountering monsters, agreeing to fund them for the sake of getting ahead of the Soviet Union, which had yet to discover the island. Randa and Brooks were joined by biologist Lin San, former SAS tracker James Conrad, anti-war photographer Mason Weaver, and a U.S. Army helicopter escort. The mammoth ape Kong, angered by the seismic charges the helicopters dropped onto his home, soon attacked the expedition, downing all of its aircraft. The survivors headed to the north shore of the island for extraction.
Along the way, they encountered the Iwi civilization and Hank Marlow, an Air Force pilot stranded there since 1944. Marlow told them of a vicious subterranean species he called the Skullcrawlers, which seemingly confirmed the hollow earth theory that earned Brooks a place at Monarch. One of these creatures devoured Randa during a battle around the skeletons of Kong's parents. Colonel Preston Packard, the leader of the Army escort, attempted to kill Kong to avenge the men he lost in the earlier attack, only to allow a much larger Skullcrawler known as the Skull Devil to surface. After Packard was killed, the remaining survivors reached the north end of the island to make their escape but were intercepted by the Skull Devil.
Kong arrived shortly afterward and fought the Skull Devil, successfully killing it and saving the expedition members. Following their escape from the island, Brooks and San brought Conrad and Weaver to a Monarch facility, where they showed them ancient cave paintings of Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah. "Kong is not the only king," Brooks concluded.
Skull Island: The Birth of Kong[]
In 1995, Brooks' son Aaron led an unauthorized expedition to the island. The team's plane was quickly shot down by a Psychovulture, and they were chased into a cave by Death Jackals. After Kong arrived and killed the creatures, the expedition members met a group of Iwi, who led them to their village. Ato, an Iwi boy who had learned to speak English from his father, who himself had learned from Hank Marlow, explained to the expedition members Kong's significance to their people, and offered to lead them on a pilgrimage to several holy sites related to Kong on the island before eventually allowing them to meet Kong himself. En route, they were attacked by a Sirenjaw, which was subsequently attacked and killed by Kong.
With the other predators of the island swarming to the carcass, it became unsafe to continue the pilgrimage and the group attempted to return to the village by crossing the "Valley of the Fallen Gods," where Kong's parents had been killed by Skullcrawlers just after their son was born. Small Skullcrawlers were stalking the area, and the group was forced to take refuge in the same cave where the infant Kong had been hidden by his parents before they were slaughtered. Once the Skullcrawlers had wandered off, the group exited the cave and made contact with their V-22 Osprey, intending to escape the island. However, Walter R. Riccio, a mythographer on the expedition who had gone insane after consuming too much of the Iwi's hallucinogenic ceremonial brew, shot the aircraft down with an RPG left behind from the 1973 expedition.
He then shot and killed Evelyn Matemavi and held the rest of the group hostage, proclaiming they would not leave the island and instead meet Kong face-to-face. When a pack of Death Jackals descended upon them, the group were able to escape in the confusion. After they made it back to the Iwi village, Riccio arrived as well and destroyed the village wall with explosives, letting several Mother Longlegs inside. Riccio believed this was a test to prove whether or not Kong truly was the island's protector, or was just an apathetic god. Kong arrived to rescue the villagers and easily killed the Mother Longlegs. Overjoyed, Riccio approached Kong and praised him, now certain he was a benevolent god who defended his subjects. As if sensing Riccio was responsible for the attack, Kong smashed him under his fist. Brooks was able to finally approach Kong and meet him face-to-face, and at last understood that his father was right in entrusting Kong to keep the island's ecosystem under control.
Now trapped on the island for good, Brooks decided to live among the Iwi and recorded an account of the expedition, which he set adrift at sea.

British mercenary Alan Jonah is interrogated at an American military base in Guam, to little success. Suddenly, the ground splits open and a huge monster erupts from underground, tearing its way through the base before feasting on a nuclear submarine. Godzilla soon emerges from the sea and roars at the creature. Godzilla approaches the monster, but it punches him in the face with its forelimb and quickly escapes back into the crater from whence it came. Godzilla roars before wading back out to sea.
A Monarch Osprey carrying Dr. Emma Russell subsequently arrives at the destroyed base. Dr. Ishiro Serizawa informs her that an earthquake struck Kyushu, Japan eighteen hours ago, triggering a series of aftershocks that traveled straight to the base in Guam. Because the earthquakes were traveling right along the Ring of Fire, experts wrote it off as tectonic activity. They were wrong, as the source of the tremors revealed itself as a particularly large MUTO. Inside the base, Russell meets with Miles Atherton, a representative of the United Nations' San Francisco Commission, formed to oversee Monarch's activities following the incident.
Serizawa and Dr. Vivienne Graham inform Emma that the Japanese government has requested that she travel to Kyushu to see something "sensitive." Atherton will be accompanying her on behalf of the Commission. Before departing in a jet on the base's runaway, Emma converses with Graham, noting that the giant MUTO ate a submarine just like the male MUTO did in Honolulu, and remarking that Godzilla seemed to arrive as if he was looking for a fight. As Emma boards the jet, Alan Jonah emerges from behind one of the seats and holds her at gunpoint. However, Tarkan Cavusgolu, a member of Monarch's Crisis Response Unit, boards the plane and aims his gun at Jonah.
Jonah tackles Tarkan and manages to escape. With the threat gone for now, Emma travels to Kyushu aboard the jet with Tarkan and Atherton. When they arrive at a Shinto holy site in Kyushu, a priest leads them to a massive crater outside the temple, almost identical to the one the MUTO emerged from in Guam. He states that it opened up in the earthquake and says it may lead to the lair of the creature that attacked Guam. Emma and Tarkan then prepare to descend directly inside the crater.
Emma and Tarkan don Katatsumuri gear which will allow them to descend quickly into the crater. Once they reach the bottom, they find the MUTO seemingly waiting for them. As it burrows and tosses tons of bedrock aside, the tunnel begins to collapse. Despite Emma's protest, Tarkan grabs her and pulls them both out of the crater before they can be crushed by the debris. Emma shouts at Tarkan, demanding that he never interfere with her work again, but Tarkan insists that he is here to protect her since she doesn't seem concerned with self-preservation.
The Shinto priest expressed his relief that Russell and Tarkan are alright, and escorts them back inside the temple. Emma asks if he knows the identity of the creature, and he responds that it is a god of the ancient Earth. He says that in Japan, followers of the Shinto faith worship the god Jinshin-Namazu, which takes the form of a fish and brings both earthquakes and rain. However, he explains that Jinshin-Namazu possesses a different, more ancient form: Jinshin-Mushi, the Dragon-Beetle. He says that this temple is dedicated to Raijin, the lord of thunder and mortal enemy of Jinshin-Mushi.
It is said that "when Raijin tires of drumming, Jinshin-Mushi rises." Tarkan then informs Emma that they have successfully cracked Jonah's phone which was confiscated from him. Its contents include GPS coordinates leading to another borehole in Siberia. Outside, Atherton converses with Emma's ex-husband Mark over a computer. Mark expresses his concern that Emma should not be working in Monarch right now, as she is not in a good place. Atherton insists that Emma is safe for the time being, but cannot discuss matters further.
In the Barents Sea, Jinshin-Mushi attacks and destroys a Russian nuclear submarine. Godzilla promptly arrives and rams Jinshin-Mushi, who once again punches him in the face before swimming away. Emma, Tarkan, and Atherton arrive in Siberia, where Tarkan informs Emma about Jinshin-Mushi's latest attack. Atherton asks if the Russian government is aware of their presence, and Tarkan responds that they are not because they can't risk allowing Alan Jonah to know about their presence. He reveals that he arranged for them to be transported to their destination via a reindeer sled. When they arrive, they find the massive crater next to an abandoned Monarch outpost.
Using a mine elevator, the three descend to the bottom of the crater, where they find what appear to be several hatched MUTO eggs. They then find themselves held at gunpoint by Alan Jonah, intending to abduct Emma. However, he is promptly surrounded by armed Monarch agents, whom Tarkan had sent ahead anticipating Jonah's presence. Tarkan informs Jonah that he will be handed over to Russian authorities, but Jonah seems unconcerned and simply promises that he will be seeing Emma again soon. Jinshin-Mushi attacks the Athena II Nuclear Power Plant in France, tearing open the plant's reactor just before being struck by a blast of atomic breath from Godzilla, who rises from the sea.
Both Titans charge at each other, with Jinshin-Mushi slashing Godzilla's neck with its claws before knocking him to the ground with a powerful punch. Jinshin-Mushi leaps onto Godzilla and extends ovipositors from its body. Before they can pierce his skin, Godzilla slashes at Jinshin-Mushi's face with his claws and causes it to jump off of him. The monsters exchange roars before Jinshin-Mushi escapes back underground. At Monarch Outpost 14 in the Philippines, Emma is greeted by her daughter Madison. Dr. Graham explains that she told Mark that Emma needed to see her daughter after all the recent stress she has been going through.
However, Graham says there is no time to celebrate as she informs her of Jinshin-Mushi's latest attack. Emma remarks that this doesn't fit the pattern since Jinshin-Mushi's first two targets were submarines, then observes a video feed of Godzilla wading back out to sea, which shows that he was badly injured in the fight. Graham then tells Emma that the Japanese government wanted her to see something they found in the Imperial archives: copies of stone tablets inscribed in Phoenician. Emma is surprised that such artifacts were found in Japan, but Graham tells her there is more news. Scans of the egg chamber in Siberia show that it is virtually identical to the MUTO eggs unearthed in the Philippines in 1999.
Emma then instructs Atherton to come with her. Dr. Ilene Chen speaks before a panel of Monarch scientists in a cavern in the southern Philippines, explaining that the myth of the dying god appears in mythologies from all over the world, and evidence of this very myth literally surrounds them right now. Emma takes the podium and explains that this very cavern housed the eggs of the two MUTOs which attacked San Francisco, and that they recently discovered an identical cavern in Siberia, despite originating from a completely different geological epoch. She says that these caverns are not natural formations, but rather they are the graves of fallen Titans, as a graphic showing the carcass of a Godzilla-like creature is displayed on a nearby screen. Serizawa asks if this creature is possibly a Godzilla ancestor, and Emma replies that it is possible since so little is known of his species' lifecycle.
Dr. Graham then begins speaking about the stone tablets. Not only are they the first recorded contact between the Levant and the Far East, but they chronicle an encounter between a Godzilla-like creature and what appears to be Jinshin-Mushi. She and Dr. Chen explain that the Godzilla-like creature may be the precedent for both the Japanese deity Raijin and the ancient Semitic sea god Dagon. The tablets show several humans surrounding the fallen Dagon, who possesses twin puncture marks in his abdomen, which may be from the spear-tipped ovipositors Jinshin-Mushi was seen extending during its most recent battle with Godzilla. Serizawa deduces that Jinshin-Mushi must have been incubating its young inside Dagon's body, like a parasite.
Emma says that once Dagon was infected, the parasitic eggs fed on his internal nuclear energy furnace, weakening him until he finally died, resulting in this very cavern. She finally reveals her conclusion: Jinshin-Mushi possesses many anatomical similarities with the MUTOs which attacked San Francisco, and as such she believes that it is their parent subspecies, MUTO Prime. Had Godzilla not killed the MUTOs, they would have reproduced. She says that after this point, the female may have killed her mate and matured into another MUTO Prime. But analysis of the MUTOs' reproductive organs raises another possibility, she says. The female MUTO's ovaries contained hundreds of unfertilized eggs, meaning she may have given rise to an entire subspecies which acts as an invasive species, reshaping and eradicating existing ecosystems.
After destroying the existing ecosystem, the brood turns on itself until only the strongest individual remains and becomes the next MUTO Prime. Emma says she does not know this for certain, but what is clear is that there once existed other members of Godzilla's species, and MUTO Prime's life cycle has played out numerous times. Most troubling is that both of the egg chambers uncovered correspond to different mass extinctions in Earth's history, while the events depicted on the Phoenician tablets coincide with a global dark age which spanned from Cambodia to Egypt. Now, she warns, it is happening again. But Emma does propose one possible measure to stop MUTO Prime.
The MUTO eggs emitted a sonic pulse, which she theorizes acted as a signal to their mother that they were safely incubating inside the host. At this point, MUTO Prime goes from fight to flight mode. If they can reproduce this sound during Godzilla's next encounter with MUTO Prime, they may be able to give him the edge. Everyone is then informed that MUTO Prime has been located heading to the Azores in Portugal. Emma quickly leaves and attempts to set her plan into motion, acquiring a sound system powerful enough to replicate the sonic pulse when MUTO Prime next emerges.
As she demands that Tarkan find more power for the operation, she briefly collapses from stress and exhaustion. Retired Monarch member Houston Brooks arrives and helps Emma up, saying he is here because he is worried about her. He says she has the same look on her face that his son Aaron had when he disappeared. He says she is pushing herself too hard, and that he knows what it's like to lose a son. Emma dismisses Brooks, saying he found his son, and assures him that nothing will happen to her.
When Brooks asks her to consider Madison, she snaps and angrily reiterates that nothing is going to happen. Emma calms down and asks Brooks to just wish her luck, which he does. As Emma is en route to the staging ground in Portugal, Tarkan informs her that Alan Jonah escaped Russian custody and asks why he seems so interested in her. Emma says she has no idea, and tells Tarkan that Jonah is unimportant compared to what is happening now. The sound system is set up at the Angra do Heroísmo in the Azores with Emma overseeing it.
When she is informed that MUTO Prime is underneath the area, she orders the sound to be played. To everyone's shock, MUTO Prime erupts from the ground and rampages through the area, killing almost Emma's entire team. The U.N. Security Council convenes an emergency hearing with Emma, Graham, and Serizawa, criticizing Monarch for the lives it has cost with its secrecy. The members of the tribunal determine that the best course of action is, to quote Serizawa, "let them fight," and allow MUTO Prime and Godzilla to hopefully kill each other. Emma and Serizawa interject, saying that if Godzilla is killed he will no longer be able to protect them.
While the tribunal is dismissive of the idea that Godzilla is defending humanity, Emma warns that MUTO Prime's next target is a storage site for decommissioned nuclear submarine power cores in Montana. If MUTO Prime reaches it, it will draw Godzilla there and finally kill him. Her pleas fall on deaf ears, and the tribunal prepares to adjourn before Atherton interjects. While he says he finds Emma unpleasant to work with, he believes that she is truly dedicated to this cause and suggests the council grant her whatever resources she requires. The panel is unimpressed, and it passes judgement to simply let Godzilla and MUTO Prime kill each other.
After the hearing, Emma reveals one last plan she has to try and stop MUTO Prime. She did not account earlier for the fact that the sonic pulse needed to sound like it was coming from inside the host to pacify MUTO Prime. If they could broadcast the sound from underground inside the facility in Montana, it may have the desired effect. To carry the plan out, Emma says she will need the prototype for the sonar device she and her ex-husband developed at MIT, the ORCA. Unfortunately, it was developed through a U.N. grant and is in their possession now.
Atherton says he will get the prototype for her, and managed to get it to her just before he is detained by security personnel. MUTO Prime begins approaching the facility in Montana, but is attacked by Godzilla, who knocks it to the ground. MUTO Prime gets back to its feet and slashes Godzilla across the face as an Osprey carrying Emma and Tarkan passes overhead. They tell the pilot to land near the battle, and both exit the chopper. MUTO Prime punches Godzilla in the face yet again, but he retaliates by ramming it.
MUTO Prime leaps above Godzilla and strikes him on the back, stunning him long enough to blast him with a devastating sonic roar that shatters his dorsal plates and knocks him to the ground. Emma and Tarkan make it inside the facility and activate the ORCA, just as MUTO Prime is about to stab Godzilla with its ovipositors. The sound causes MUTO Prime to hesitate just long enough for Godzilla to lift it onto his back and fire a powerful pulse of atomic energy from his shattered dorsal plates. The blast launches MUTO Prime into the sky, severing its smaller forelimbs and causing it to crash into the ground on its back. Before MUTO Prime can react, Godzilla stomps on and crushes its head, successfully killing it.
Emma and Tarkan watch as Godzilla lets out a victorious roar before weakly limping into the sunset, smoke pouring off his wounded back. In Boston, Emma walks with Madison, promising that she will never leave her again. She says that the world is changing and some scary things may happen soon, but that it's the only way for things to get better. Whatever happens, she swears, she will keep Madison safe. Madison tells her mother that she saw her on the news, calling her a hero. Emma says she couldn't have done it without the accounts recovered from the ancients.
Madison asks what happened to the Phoenicians, but Emma replies that she doesn't know. Whatever the case, Emma expresses her admiration for all the adventurers and explorers who dare strike out into the unknown.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters[]
By 2019, the U.S. government was threatening to shut down Monarch and have the military take over jurisdiction of the many Titans under observation by the organization, with much of the public demanding the Titans be destroyed following the 2014 San Francisco attack. At this time, Dr. Emma Russell was stationed at Outpost 61 in China's Yunnan Rainforest, where the Titan designated Mothra was under observation. While Mothra's egg had been consistently dormant for some time, it suddenly became active and Emma was quickly called to the chamber housing the egg. She, her daughter Madison, and the other staff there witnessed the larval Mothra hatch from her egg. Mothra became distressed and lashed out at the personnel trying to contain her, with Emma using her sonar device the Orca to pacify her. Just then, the Outpost was assaulted by armed attackers who killed most of the staff but captured Emma, Madison, and the Orca. Doctors Ishiro Serizawa and Vivienne Graham were alerted to this event during a hearing before several U.S. Senators and were forced to leave. Accompanied by Dr. Sam Coleman, the doctors traveled aboard an Osprey to the home of Dr. Mark Russell, Emma's estranged husband and a former member of Monarch. They explained the situation to Mark, who was angry Monarch continued work on the Orca, a device he felt was so dangerous it shouldn't exist. Nevertheless, Mark accompanied the scientists to Monarch Outpost 54 in Bermuda, a.k.a. Castle Bravo. They attended a briefing with Monarch's other chief scientists and members of its military G-Team, where it was explained that Emma and Madison were taken by eco-terrorist Alan Jonah. Mark interjected that he felt Jonah and his men were not after Mothra, but rather a much bigger "prize." Now that they had the Orca, they had access to all of Monarch's observed Titans. Not long after, Godzilla approached the Outpost, which raised its shields and Maser Turrets defensively. Mark told G-Team to stand down to signal that they were not a threat to Godzilla. Serizawa agreed with Mark and the turrets and shields were lowered. Godzilla seemed to calm down before storming past the Outpost toward Antarctica, the site of Outpost 32.
Monarch and G-Team boarded the flying flagship the USS Argo, bound for Antarctica. Aboard the flight, Serizawa and Graham explained that the Titan in containment, codenamed "Monster Zero", was likely another apex predator that rivaled Godzilla. The Argo arrived at its destination and sent the scientists and soldiers to the Outpost aboard two Ospreys. G-Team entered the Outpost and was ambushed by Jonah's men. Seeing his wife and daughter on a monitor, Mark rushed in after G-Team and made his way onto a catwalk where he came face-to-face with Emma and Madison. Rather than come to Mark, Madison stayed behind with her mother, who warned Mark to run before activating the detonator for charges planted in the ice. Jonah escaped with Emma and Madison in the ensuing chaos, while Mark stayed behind to help G-Team escape. As Mark and G-Team fled the crumbling Outpost, Emma used the Orca to awaken Monster Zero. The three-headed Titan promptly vaporized many of G-Team's soldiers with his gravity beams and gave chase to the survivors. Emma momentarily activated the Orca to prevent Monster Zero from destroying the Osprey Mark fled to before her Osprey escaped the area. Godzilla soon erupted from the ice and fought with Monster Zero, their battle knocking one of the Ospreys into a crack in the ice. Dr. Graham stayed behind to help Mark escape while the rest of the craft's occupants quickly fled. As Mark and Graham ran toward the others, Monster Zero bit down on the ice with one of his heads, swallowing Graham whole. The Argo arrived soon after and bombarded Monster Zero with missiles, prompting him to retreat.
Back aboard the Argo, the members of Monarch debated whether Emma truly was the one who pressed the trigger at Outpost 32. Mark confirmed it was her, and as if on cue the Argo was contacted by Emma, who explained her actions. With Monarch on the verge of being shut down and the Titans all set to be exterminated, releasing them was the only way to ensure they could restore balance to the nature that mankind has destroyed and prevent the end of the world, she claimed. Serizawa and the others accused Emma of meddling with forces beyond her control and risking billions of lives, but Emma maintained her resolve. She warned the others to seek shelter before signing off. Monarch learned that Emma was not at Outpost 56 in Isla de Mara, Mexico as they had previously believed, but rather bouncing her signal off of Monarch's satellites and hiding in an unidentified location. However, she still had the ability to disable the containment field at Outpost 56 and release the Titan inside, so G-Team headed to the nearby village to evacuate it. Emma activated the Orca and awakened the Titan known as Rodan, who burst from the crater of the island's volcano. Monarch found that Monster Zero, who had previously disappeared within a tropical storm, was now heading directly to Rodan's location, no doubt drawn by the Titan's cries. Colonel Diane Foster decided to lure Rodan away from Isla de Mara and into the path of Monster Zero. Fighter jets opened fire on Rodan and he quickly gave chase after them and the Argo, leveling the buildings beneath him simply by flying over them. Rodan wiped out the fighter jets and closed in on the Argo before colliding with Monster Zero. As the two Titans clashed, Mark was able to open the hangar doors to the Argo to allow an Osprey laden with civilians to land inside. However, Monster Zero had defeated Rodan and was now closing in on the Argo. Luckily, Godzilla leapt from the water and dragged his foe under just before he could reach the craft. Monarch had been contacted by Admiral William Stenz, who ordered the Argo to withdraw before the military's experimental Oxygen Destroyer impacted the water and killed everything in a two mile radius. Godzilla had taken the upper hand and managed to sever Monster Zero's left head just before the weapon impacted. Godzilla was severely weakened and seemingly killed by the Oxygen Destroyer, while Monster Zero simply flew out of the water none the worse for wear. The creature perched atop the Isla de Mara volcano and regenerated his missing head in a matter of moments before emitting a deafening cry that awakened all of the dormant Titans around the globe.
Back in China, where Monarch had set up a perimeter around Mothra's cocoon, Dr. Houston Brooks realized that all of the awakening Titans were responding to Monster Zero's call. He tried to inform Dr. Ling about the situation, but found her watching the cocoon, which proceeded to break open and unleash Mothra's imago stage. Aboard the Argo, Dr. Ilene Chen managed to piece together ancient records of Monster Zero and concluded that he was not part of the natural order. In other words, he was an alien, an invasive species, changing the Earth's environment to his own liking. This explained his unusual abilities, such as his immunity to the Oxygen Destroyer, his regeneration of his severed head, and the effect he had on the other Titans. Chen reported that these ancient legends referred to the creature as "Ghidorah, the One Who is Many." When the Argo returned to Outpost 54, it found the base surrounded by the U.S. Navy. Inside, Admiral Stenz briefed everyone on the situation. The Titans were not taking nuclear weapons as bait like the MUTOs did in 2014, and Stenz described their behavior as "erratic." Chen and Mark explained that rather than acting randomly, the Titans were responding to Ghidorah like a pack. If they could stop Ghidorah, Mark said, they would stop them all. Unfortunately, the military had killed the only Titan capable of confronting Ghidorah. As Mark prepared to leave Castle Bravo, he witnessed a blinding light appear in the sky and part the clouds. The light was being given off by the imago Mothra, who Monarch recorded emitting a sonar frequency. After searching for a response, Monarch detected a faint noise from Godzilla, meaning he was still alive. Monarch split into two groups: one aboard the Argo which would combat Ghidorah and Rodan in Washington, D.C., and another composed of Mark, Serizawa, Chen, and Dr. Rick Stanton which would try to revive Godzilla with the nuclear warheads aboard the USS Scorpion.
Both teams departed Castle Bravo, with Mothra leading the Scorpion to Godzilla's location, her light acting as a beacon. The Scorpion was suddenly pulled underwater by a strong current and found itself within the Hollow Earth. There, Monarch witnessed the ruins of an ancient civilization which had coexisted with Godzilla and the Titans. Further within the ruins was a radioactive air pocket in which Godzilla rested on a gigantic altar. Unfortunately, the Scorpion's firing systems had been damaged and it could not fire a warhead. Furthermore, manually arming a warhead inside the pocket would prove fatal to whoever carried out the task due to the heat and radiation. Serizawa did not hesitate in saying he would do the task. Despite protests from his colleagues, Serizawa was resolute. He gave Mark his notes and told him to take care of the others before departing in a miniature submarine. Serizawa reached the altar and climbed it with the warhead, finally reaching the summit and arming it. He removed his mask and approached Godzilla, placing his hand on the monster's face in the waning moments before the warhead detonated. The blast propelled the Scorpion to the surface, after which Mark and Chen climbed to the surface to see if Serizawa was successful. Godzilla soon rose from the depths, completely revitalized. Godzilla leaned forward and stared at the humans, with Mark ordering no one to move. Godzilla then turned around and began heading toward Boston, where Madison had taken the Orca.
Mark and the others rendezvoused with the rest of Monarch aboard the Argo, which accompanied Godzilla into the city as he prepared for a final confrontation with Ghidorah. Mark and G-Team took an Osprey to Fenway Park to save Madison, but could only find the damaged Orca. Emma arrived in a vehicle and ordered them to get in with her. As the two drove through Boston, Godzilla took on Ghidorah while Mothra and Rodan dueled in the sky. They realized that Madison was likely hiding in their old home, and found her holed up inside the bathtub. Working together, Mark and Emma repaired the Orca and used it to lure Ghidorah away from Godzilla. As Mark, Madison, and G-Team boarded an Osprey to escape, Emma chose to take the Orca with her and drive away, buying time for the Osprey to take off. Ghidorah gave chase and destroyed the vehicle, but was confronted by Godzilla in his Burning state and subsequently destroyed. The members of Monarch inside the Osprey watched as the other Titans surrounded Godzilla and proceeded to submit to him as their new alpha.
Kingdom Kong[]
In 2021, as the world recovers from the apocalyptic catastrophe, Monarch once again returned to Skull Island, where they got attacked by a Spirit Tiger, a Death Jackal and a Mother Longlegs.
Along the way, Kong also roamed into Skull Island, and discovering cave paintings of a tree. Suddenly, a bat Titan known as Camazotz and his minions attack Kong and Monarch out of nowhere, until Kong defeats Camazotz with a final blow, sending the giant bat back into the Hollow Earth, leaving Ghidorah's storm taking over Skull Island.
Godzilla Dominion[]
After Ghidorah's defeat, Godzilla worked to maintain balance among the newly-awakened Titans. He fought Scylla when she battled the U.S. Coast Guard over a nuclear warhead, drove Amhuluk from Behemoth's territory, rescued Na Kika from being captured by humans, and battled Tiamat before finding a new lair in the Hollow Earth. Before he himself could rest again, Godzilla set out to return the other Titans to their ancient rest.
Godzilla vs. Kong[]
In 2024, since Ghidorah's storm destroys Skull Island, Godzilla suddenly begins to act aggressively towards humans, seemingly without provocation, and attacks numerous facilities developed by Apex Cybernetics.
Agents from Apex hire a Monarch sect led by operatives Nathan Lind and Ilene Andrews to seek out a radiation-based energy source in the Hollow Earth, an ecosystem located beneath the Earth's surface and the alleged birthplace of the Titans. With help from Andrews' adopted daughter Jia, who can communicate with Kong via sign language, they extract Kong from Skull Island to have him lead them there. Once they arrive in the Hollow Earth, Apex reveals its intention to use the power source in conjunction with DNA from one of Ghidorah's skulls to power Mechagodzilla, a powerful automaton designed to exterminate the Titans and ensure human dominance and the cause of Godzilla's sudden hostility. Mechagodzilla becomes self-aware and hostile as a result of Ghidorah's implemented DNA, killing its creators and going on a rampage through Hong Kong. Godzilla and Kong, after concluding their own feud with each other, work together to defeat the robot. After that, Godzilla returns to the sea while Kong returns to the Hollow Earth to make it his new home.
