Monet St. Croix, nicknamed M, is a fictional comic book superheroine, a mutant who appears in the X-Men family of books published by Marvel Comics. Created by writer Scott Lobdell and artist Chris Bachalo, she originally was a member of the teenage mutant group Generation X (1994), and later X-Factor, and is now seen in X-Men.
Powers & Abilities[]
Monet possesses a wide variety of mutant powers which represent a near-perfect human being. Just a few of her powers include genius-level intelligence, super strength, flight, telepathy, and nigh-invulnerability.
Personality and Traits[]
Born into an upper class family, Monet can be very snobbish. She's the second of four children and their father's favorite, which possibly doesn't do much in lessening her ego. However, she shows that she is a good person underneath. Although she knows people see her as self-absorbed and arrogant, she has to be that way because she's still suffering from her time as Penance. Everyday, she has to make the choice not to kill herself and gets her strength from the arrogant 'M' persona.
Trivia[]
- Monet took ballet at a young age.
- Like her mother, Monet is a Muslim.
- Monet has had a spread in Vanity Fair Magazine.
- Monet was initially thought to be autistic, but it was later revealed it was only Claudette's autism emerging with the impersonated M, and the real Monet had no similar condition.
- Monet is a citizen of France, Yugoslavia, and Algeria, with passports from all three countries, despite Yugoslavia no longer existing.
- Jonathan Hickman listed Monet as one of his five favourite mutants.
- During Uncanny X-Men, Monet developed a close but rocky relationship with Sabretooth that writer Cullen Bunn described as a torturous love.
- Though Monet's baseline strength is higher than that of her teammate, Strong Guy, her strength stat (4) is still two points underneath his own (6).
- Monet revealed to Doctor Samson that she has suicidal thoughts every day of her life due to the trauma that she suffered at the hands of her brother Marius.
- In early appearances, Monet had a much darker skin color than how she was portrayed in the 2000s. This was referenced, in response to a fan, on the letters page of X-Factor (Vol. 3) #4:
- Some fans have theorized that Monet's powers are completely psionic in nature, not physical, meaning her strength and durability was always a form of tactile telekinesis, similar to DC's Kon-El/Superboy. This theory remains untested and unconfirmed, however.
- Scott Lobdell, the creator of M and Penance, never intended for there to be a "real" M - only the St. Croix twins. Instead, Penance was simply meant to be a sixteen-year-old survivor of the war in Yugoslavia, and had been deaf since birth. Moreover, Emplate was not to be related to Monet nor the twins.
- The idea to have Penance be the "real" Monet was actually none of the writers’, but editorial.
