Monkey D. Luffy or simply Luffy is the main protagonist of the Netflix original series One Piece, which is based on the anime/manga franchise of the same name.
He is the fearless captain of the Straw Hat Pirates, who travel across the vast and dangerous seas in search of the legendary One Piece—the greatest treasure in the world. His ultimate goal is not only to find the treasure but to claim the title of King of the Pirates.
He is portrayed by Iñaki Godoy, who also portrayed Juan Ruiz in The Imperfects, and by Colton Osorio as child. In the Japanese dub, he is voiced by the legendary actress Mayumi Tanaka, who voices the same character in the anime series.
Biography[]
Background[]
Luffy was born 17 years ago in Windmill Village, located in the East Blue. When he was six years old, Shanks and his crew, the Red Hair Pirates, took up temporary residence in the village. During their stay, the crew's sniper, Yasopp, often told Luffy about his son Usopp, who was around Luffy’s age. Inspired by the pirates and determined to join their crew, Luffy once stabbed himself below his left eye to prove he was brave enough to be a pirate.
One day, Luffy joined the Red Hair Pirates at the Partys Bar and, once again, begged Shanks to let him join them—without success. While at the bar, Luffy discovered a mysterious fruit stored in a chest and ate it, unaware it was the Gomu Gomu no Mi. Just then, a mountain bandit named Higuma entered with his gang, demanding sake. The bartender, Makino, told them the pirates had drunk it all. When Shanks offered Higuma the last bottle, Higuma smashed it on the floor. Rather than retaliate, Shanks calmly cleaned up the mess, prompting Higuma to mock him further before storming out. Luffy was furious at Shanks for not fighting back and tried to leave, but Shanks stopped him—revealing Luffy's arm could stretch, a side effect of eating the Devil Fruit. The crew explained to a shocked Luffy that he had consumed a Devil Fruit and would never be able to swim again.
Eventually, the Red Hair Pirates set sail, and Luffy began exploring his new rubber powers, dreaming of becoming a pirate. One day, while at the bar, Higuma’s gang returned. Luffy tried to take them on but was quickly defeated. Luckily, the Red Hair Pirates were nearby and easily dealt with the bandits. However, Higuma managed to escape, taking Luffy out to sea with him. On the water, Higuma attempted to kill Luffy, but a Sea King known as the Lord of the Coast attacked, devouring Higuma and leaving Luffy helpless in the water. Just in time, Shanks arrived to rescue Luffy, scaring the beast away. However, the Sea King had bitten off Shanks' left arm in the process. Luffy was devastated and felt responsible for what happened.
Before leaving Windmill Village for good, the Red Hair Pirates said their farewells. Luffy, now more determined than ever, announced that he would set out on his own journey and become the King of the Pirates. Shanks, impressed by his resolve, gave Luffy his cherished straw hat, asking him to return it once he had become a great pirate.
Season 1[]
To be added.
Personality[]
In the original series, Luffy makes it clear that while he admires heroes, he has no desire to be one; while he does often fight for other people, he generally only does so after seeing that they're willing to stand up for themselves (or if they had previously given him food), and is fine with ignoring their plight otherwise. In the live action series, he has a much more standard sense of heroism, helping people just because it's the right thing to do. Likewise, Luffy is ambitious, excitable and a bit of a simpleton but with a heart of gold and the charisma needed to rouse anyone with a good heart into being his allies. While still plenty optimistic and happy-go-lucky, live-action Luffy doesn't quite match the original's unshakeable self-confidence and implicit, unquestioning faith in his crew's abilities.
Appearance[]
Like his manga counterpart, Luffy is usually recognizable by his straw hat, a gift from "Red-Haired" Shanks. The character has a scar under his left eye from stabbing himself to demonstrate his courage to Shanks and his crew. He later wears a red vest and denim shorts. This version also wears shoes instead of sandals.
Powers and Abilities[]
Like in the anime/manga, Luffy demonstrates superhuman strength, including shattering stone with his bare fists and destroying Arlong Park with Gum-Gum Battle Axe, and he overall takes less hits than in the manga due to dodging attacks more often, and he has a great sense of hearing his surroundings. Despite often acting as a carefree, naive and dimwitted, Luffy has intelligence, which is demonstrated by his capacity for improvisation and creativity, especially in combat. He also displays a little bit more wit and awareness than in the manga and anime, as when he makes a bet with Nami to see if Kaya is going to really just give the Going Merry to them or if they will have to steal it or when he tries to convince Zeff to let him use credit to eat in the Baratie without paying.
