I'm Monkeystar. I'm Clan leader, so I mostly decide what we do each day.
~ Monkeystar introducing herself to Graystripe

Monkeystar is a minor character in the Warriors series, serving as a supporting character in the super edition Graystripe's Vow. She is the leader of WarriorClan, an unofficial Clan made up of kittypets inspired by tales of the old Clans of the forest. Upon meeting a real Clan cat by the name of Graystripe, she and her Clanmates accompany him on his journey to the Moonstone and later help many kittypets escape from an overcrowded house.

Appearance[]

Monkeystar is a young she-cat with short tortoiseshell fur, a white chest and paws, and green eyes.

Biography[]

After hearing of stories from Barley and Smudge about the four Clans who once used to live in the forest before Twoleg construction made them move away, several kittypets decide to make up their own Clan, calling it WarriorClan. A young she-cat named Monkey is made their leader, renaming herself Monkeystar like the leaders of the official Clans.

When Graystripe visits his old home to try and contact StarClan from the Moonstone, Monkeystar attacks and pins him down as he wanders through RiverClan's old territory. She tells him that he's trespassing on WarriorClan's territory, introducing herself and her Clan. Graystripe is shocked to find out that she's the leader, noting how she's only as old as an apprentice. When he tells her that he's from ThunderClan, she challenges him to a fight to prove it. Graystripe easily wins with his claws sheathed, and though she's upset about her defeat for a moment, she and her Clanmates become excited about meeting a real Clan cat. They ask if they can join him for his journey to the Moonstone, but he declines, saying he must do it alone. To WarriorClan's delight, he agrees to teach them some basic moves for hunting and fighting before he leaves anyway.

Despite the old gray tom's words, the cats of WarriorClan follow him to Highstones in secret. When he discovers them, he's impressed by their stealth and decides to let them tag along after all. On the way there, the group encounters a rogue named Fang, who says that he's the son of Gremlin, an old friend of Graystripe's. Monkeystar doesn't trust the rogue, but Graystripe knows what he's saying is true and promises to help him save his mate after he's visited the Moonstone. The group then arrives to the cave holding the Moonstone, and Graystripe orders everyone else to stay outside while he goes in. Monkeystar tells him to yowl for them if need be, and Fang adds that they'll be ready.

When Graystripe later comes out of the cave shocked and says that the Moonstone exploded, Monkeystar suggests they go visit an old black-and-white tom who lives on the nearby farm, as he might be able to help them. Graystripe realizes she's talking about Barley and the group heads towards the farm. Most of WarriorClan goes home to their owners for the night, but Monkeystar and Clawwhistle accompany Graystripe and Fang as they visit Barley. Fang then explains how he escaped from a twoleg who hoarded cats, but needs to go back to help free his old housemates, especially his ill mate Daffodil. The four are about to head over to the house to help the cats trapped there escape, but knowing how dangerous the mission could be, Graystripe tells Monkeystar and Clawwhistle to stay behind and watch over Barley to keep them out of harm's way.

When Graystripe gets trapped inside the house as well, Fang goes to find the WarriorClan cats and leads them to the house to help with the escape. They pry open a loose floorboard which everyone escapes through. Afterwards, Monkeystar is tasked with protecting the now-freed cats and is delighted that many of them wish to join WarriorClan. Fang also decides to join, with Graystripe appointing him as deputy and an elderly she-cat who lived in the house named Petunia as the Clan's medicine cat. The cats of WarriorClan all then say a heartfelt goodbye to Graystripe as he begins the journey back home.

In the epilogue, Monkeystar feels a bit insecure that Fang is a more capable leader than her. She worries when Petunia goes missing for three days strait, leading a search party to find her. They eventually find her in her old owner's house, now vacant after the Twoleg was taken away in an ambulance. Petunia says that she could't bear to leave this place behind, as she was her owner's first cat before the hoarding began and misses her dearly. Determined not to let the elderly she-cat be miserable, Monkeystar takes her to the Moonstone, hoping that she'll get the closer she needs there. After a while Petunia comes out of the cave looking much brighter, describing how Gremlin's spirit told her that though her owner has sadly passed away, she's now happier in a better place, and Petunia can be happy as well with her new family in WarriorClan. When they return, Fang commends his leader on bringing Petunia back and lifting her spirits, saying that her care for her cats will make her a fine leader. Monkeystar is assured by this, promising herself to always do what's best for all her Clanmates.
