Now get out there and make someone smile.
~ Mr. Boss in the pilot episode.
Yep! Guess I'm OOGLY-GOO!!
~ Mr. Boss before having a psychotic breakdown, also one of his most famous quotes.

Mr. Boss is the overarching protagonist of the adult animated series Smiling Friends. He serves as the founder and head of the eponymous business who appoints Pim and Charlie with making clients smile, and is also the employer of Allan and Glep.

He is voiced by Marc M., who also voices Bill Nye in the same series.

Appearance[]

He is a tall, Caucasian, elderly man, likely in his late 60s or early 70s, with a large, wrinkled, jowly head, a prominent nose, and a very thin frame. His white hair forms a horseshoe pattern around the bald top of his head, a typical sign of balding, which he tries to cover with an ill-matching dark grey toupee.

He typically wears a navy blue suit paired with a white shirt, a yellow bow tie, and brown shoes.

Personality[]

Mr. Boss is a complex character who blends friendliness with eccentricity. He is extremely passionate, charismatic, and optimistic when performing his job as head of the Smiling Friends, and it can even be argued that he is a master at making people smile, even surpassing valuable employees like Pim and Charlie in this skill. He maintains a laid-back, fun-loving, polite demeanor with his employees, treating them as friends and affectionately calling them his "boys." His enthusiasm for his business is evident in his prompt responses to clients, though he occasionally indulges in video games at work.

Despite his genuine kindness, Mr. Boss exhibits peculiar behaviors that hint at potential mental health issues, even making him dangerous at times. He often switches to an unsettling Southern accent mid-conversation. His actions can be bizarre, such as inhaling spaghetti while wandering the halls or casually mentioning consuming Allan's worms. In more extreme instances, he's shown participating in violent acts or consulting imaginary business figures during moments of stress.

Mr. Boss displays signs of possible dissociative identity disorder, manifesting in conversations with a demonic mirror version of himself and abrupt personality shifts. He keeps a mysterious manifesto and has made concerning statements about potential violent actions. While in Spamtopia, he initially showed cultural insensitivity but quickly adapted his views.

Despite these troubling traits, Mr. Boss demonstrates the ability to control his darker impulses when confronted with others' distress. He's also described as a "horndog" by Pim, which is mildly hinted at through his relationship with Brittney, though this aspect of him isn't heavily featured in the show.

Trivia[]

  • As Mr. Boss's surname starts with M, it's possible that his surname is Meep, as in the name found in numerous brands and locations in the Smiling Friends universe such as Meep Boulevard and MeepEats. As Mr. Boss apparently has a net worth of billions, this could explain why he's so wealthy despite Smiling Friends Inc. being a rather small company.
  • Mr. Boss is inconsistently portrayed with a differing number of fingers, occasionally having five instead of his usual four.
  • After Frowning Friends, some theorized that Mr. Boss might be a be a PTSD stricken veteran, possessing homicidal moments during his mental breakdowns, being rather muscular underneath his clothing and skilled at using firearms. It’s also noted that when he breaks into the Frowning Friends headquarters, Mr. Boss is dragging one of his legs along as if reliving a war memory when his leg was injured.
    • Furthermore, it's revealed that Mr. Boss's nose is hollow, detachable, and contains cyanide pills, which could mean that this is a prosthesis for an injury he suffered in service, keeping the pills from said time in the military.
