Mr. Bumpy is the main protagonist of the cartoon Bump in the Night.
He was voiced by Jim Cummings, who voiced tons of cartoon characters such as Darkwing Duck.
Appearance[]
He is a short, green-skinned monster with two big eyeballs that are attached to stalks that stick out of his skull, has red eye color with black irises, a long nose, and he has slender arms and legs with long fingernails and feet, both with small claws, but he has four fingers on each hand and two ingrown toenails on each foot.
Personality[]
Playful and fun-loving, Bumpy is a wild, comical, mischievous, boisterous, overconfident, carefree, devil-may-care, brash, grandiose, melodramatic, exuberant, crude, gross, chipper, egocentric, sassy, silly, friendly, energetic, sock-loving thrill-seeker with a charismatic attitude, friendly demeanor and a gravelly hip tone of voice who lives throughout all of the hijinks, zany antics and wacky misadventures, causing mayhem and finding fun wherever he goes no matter how weird his situation gets.
While he is often impulsive, reckless, childish, lacking in some civil manners and often eats anything he likes before considering any consequences to his actions that makes him too heedless and mindless most of the time, he can have a few moments of being resourceful, wise, cunning, clever, wily, underhanded and thoughtful.
Despite being rough, messy, unruly, disobedient, defiant, sometimes rude or sarcastic, gluttonous in a greedy way, can be self-deluded & boastful/prideful by delusions of grandeur to the point he thinks he has the gift of "diabolical genius", and a cheeky troublemaker/prankster whose jerkish and prankish actions can go a little too far on small occasions, he shows a soft spot for baby snails, the Boy he sees as Bumpy's hero, was more than willing to help the Boy fall asleep even if it means taking on the closet monster, and is loyal enough to be thinking very wholeheartedly about his friends to the point of being willing to save them or help them with anything such as helping Squishington getting a bomb clock out of Squishy's gut, helping him hydrate during a day without water by gathering tons of water bottles (without a bottle opener to open them), or trying to help Molly feel better getting an replacement for her missing amputated arm (heck one time he almost willingly sacrificed himself for failing to surprise Squishington with a rabbit and causing trouble despite Squishington forgiving Bumpy for the trouble).
He sometimes enjoys breaking the fourth wall to make a witty joke, such as saying how it's blackmail for being forced into Molly's friends' party in the episode "Party Poopers" or even he covers the camera when Squishington kisses Germ Girl on the lips and says "HEY! You can't do THAT on TV!" in the episode "Adventures in Microbia".
He is addicted to socks and loves eating them. This can be used against him if Molly tries to outsmart him by saying there's a giant sock as a form of distraction and Bumpy will get easily distracted to find a sock to eat.
It's revealed that if he's ever intelligent or has a brain that thinks and works correctly for once, pennies will rain and drop on him all the time (and thinking hard will make bigger pennies drop), so Bumpy is unintelligent for this reason in particular.
Relationships[]
Molly Coddle and Squishington are Bumpy's close friends. He cares for them very much, just as they do for him.
He and Squishington have a strong friendship throughout the show. Even when Bumpy can be a jerk sometimes, he truly cares for him and will always be thoughtful towards how sensitive Squishington is. He often gives many fun affectionate nicknames to him, such as "Squishmister" and "Pal-ol-Mine".
Bumpy calls Molly his "favorite gal", implying his preference of her over the Cute Dolls and other female residents of the house (most likely because they are too "girly" for his liking). Bumpy and Squishington are shown to be highly distressed whenever they fear that something terrible has happened to Molly.
He has also shown affection for Molly (e.g., Mr. Bumpy calling her "Toots"), but the affections are arguably not romantic; Bumpy and Squishington might act chivalrous to Molly to show how important their friendship is.

- It is also possible that Mr Bumpy's skin color got inspired by Gumby cause Ken Pontac, the co-creator of Bump in the Night worked as art director for The New Adventures of Gumby, before creating Bump in the Night, So Mr Bumpy could be the green sock eating monster version of Gumby.
- The idea of Mr Bumpy's love of disgusting things was probably inspired by the character Oscar The Grouch from "Sesame Street" cause there both green, They love trash and they both love living in filthy places.
