Hero Overview

"Beep, Boop, Beep, Boop!"
~ Mr. Game and Watch
"Do we really play the game, or do we just watch?"
~ Mr. Game and Watch's famous line.

Mr. Game & Watch (shortened to Mr. G&W or Mr. G.&.W.) is the titular main protagonist of the handheld series of video games of the same name published by Nintendo. Although the specific character was not introducted until 2001 and the Game & Watch franchise did not represent a true mascot, Mr. Game & Watch was intended to be an amalgamation of the entire franchise. He is also introduced as a playable fighter in all of the Super Smash Bros. series, initially debutting his playable appearance in Super Smash Bros. Melee. He is capable of wielding all sorts of items as weapons like a pump, a giant hammer, an alarm bell that he smacks antagonists with, a giant key, a bomb and more derived from the Game & Watch series.

Throughout his appearances, Mr. Game & Watch is generally depicted as a 2D character resembling a flat sheet of paper (even in 3D space), matching the 2-dimensional graphics of the Game & Watch series. Mr. Game & Watch is typically incapable of ordinary speech. Instead, he "speaks" in a series of sounds such as bleep bloops. He also possesses a well-known Final Smash, where he morphs into a giant octopus, and his tentacles trap opponents and hit them, and dragging them out of the scene.

Appearance[]

Mr. Game & Watch simply appears to be a 2D silhouette character resembling a stick figure with realistically proportioned human-like features; however, the only features he does not represent are eyes and ears (with the expection of his Ball, Spitball Sparky, Fire, Vermin, Stanley, Manhole, Oil Panic forms and more), and his body is shaped like a teardrop, which is wider and bulker compared to a stick figure, along with a large and straight nose (somewhat similar to Mugman, but is considerably smaller). Occasionally, he can be protrayed 3D and his mouth can be seen white on the inside. His entire body is black with a dark/light gray outline, and is typically protrayed with an alarm bell (with the expection of Super Smash Bros. 4 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate). He is typically depicted with circular stubs for hands in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (which seem somewhat similar to the Powerpuff Girls), but is depicted with realistic hands at certain points. Even though he has no visible eyes and no ears, he still has eyesight and sense of hearing.

In his Ball form (also known as Mr. Juggler), Mr. Game & Watch's appearance resembles himself from the initial game of the Game & Watch franchise. He has his arms and legs levitating around his body, in a comparable design of Rayman. His body and head appears to be a shape of a circle, and also has thinner limbs. Some of his body parts (such as his legs and arms) are detached from his body and separated in two, but that doesn't apply for his legs, and he also has a large straight pointy nose. He has circular eyes with circular pupils and ears. He is also seen juggling three balls.

In his Spitball Sparky form, Mr. Game & Watch features a pair of small circular eyes, and his nose is replaced with a large puffshooter, along with wearing masculine shoes. Typically, he is seen blowing or shooting puffs of air above him from his puffshooter for his nose, and can be able to shoot puffs of air upwards or forwards, which is used for attacking opponents.

In his Octopus form, Mr. Game & Watch wears a heavy scuba-diving helmet while collectiing loot in the ocean, and his head inside is intangible. This is also equipped for attacking opponents, performing an arcing headbutt towards opponents, evidently with lots of force to KO them. In some of Mr. Game & Watch's artworks by the fans, the symbol on the center of his diving helmet is stylized as the Smash Ball from the Super Smash Bros. series.

In his Fire Attack form, Mr. Game & Watch heavily features the comparable design of a Native Stereotype American, a fire match being held by a disjointed arm, along with wearing tattered-looking and dressed up clothing. Another form of Mr. Game & Watch in Fire Attack is seen, with Mr. Game & Watch in a fedora hat and in cowboy-esque clothing, along with a hammer being held by two disjointed arms.

In his Helmet form, Mr. Game & Watch simply wears a helmet which is equipped for attacking opponents, performing a sliding headbutt towards the opponents along the ground. This is also worn for evading falling objects.

In his Fire form, Mr. Game & Watch is bounced vertically up in the air from a trampoline, utilized by a pair of firefighters. In his Parachute form, Mr. Game & Watch deploys a big parachute that can allow him to make soft landings, especially when landing on another form of Mr. Game & Watch's boat around the ocean.

In his Tropical Fish form, Mr. Game & Watch holds a fishbowl which a pair of fish tosses themselves out of it, and Mr. Game & Watch has to put the fish back to the bowl, as introduced from the Game & Watch series. During the minigame, Mr. Game & Watch protrayed to have a more human-like look[1], like in Greenhouse.

In his Turtle Bridge form, Mr. Game & Watch (with a pair of eyes and in masculine clothes, holding a boomerang/parachute given by another version of Mr. Game & Watch seen in Turtle Bridge with a pair of large eyes and a furry hat and a disjointed arm) walks or jumps over turtles in the water as a bridge to get to the other side. This is also used for attacking opponents, biting opponents via the turtle for 4 times. Another incarnation of Mr. Game & Watch in Turtle Bridge is seen, with Mr. Game & Watch, with disjonted arms, wearing masculine clothes and a furry hat. He is seen at the other side during the minigame, where he is waiting for the other version of Mr. Game & Watch to give the boomerang/parachute.

In his Greenhouse form, otherwise known as Stanley the Fugimator[2], Mr. Game & Watch has a pair of straight small eyes, and two fronds of hair, a pair of ears, a smaller nose, a fumigator hat and fumigator clothes; such as white gloves and boots, and a white strip on his body. He is also seen holding a gas-shooter. In one of the official Greenhouse artworks, Stanley depicted to have a more human-like look[3].

In his Vermin form, Mr. Game & Watch features a somewhat similar appearance to his Ball form, with the expections of the lack of a nose, blank white eyes and the same-colored mouth, and his legs are attached to his body, along with a pair of ears. He is seen holding a pair of disjointed hammers, which can be slammed on the ground to bury opponents, in case of being used for attacking opponents.

In his Manhole form, Mr. Game & Watch (with a neck and fingers, a pair of stitched eyes, fresh human-like teeth, and a somewhat big body similar to his Ball form, along with a non-visible nose) holds out a bridge for other multi-clones of Mr. Game & Watch or other characters to pass by. This was first introduced in one of the Game & Watch minigames, Manhole. The real version of Mr. Game & Watch is seen sprinting above the platform. In one of the official Manhole artworks, Mr. Game & Watch and Manhole were protrayed to have a more human-like look instead of being black-colored[4].

In his Flagman form, Mr. Game & Watch appears to wear a somewhat-looking farmer/pirate outfit, while he has small blank white eyes and a large white smile on his face, along with a neck, fingers and ears, a non-visible nose, and disjointed arms and legs. He is typically seen holding a pair of flags that shows either number, 1 or 2, and sometimes sticks his feet out that shows either number, 3 or 4. Mr. Game & Watch's official artwork in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate shows him waving a flag that shows the number 1, which is based on Flagman.

In his Lion form, Mr. Game & Watch wears a police-like hat while thrusting a chair towards lions or opponents, making him more like a officer version of Mr. Game & Watch. This can also be used for attacking opponents, thrusting a chair towards opponents.

In his Judge form, Mr. Game & Watch appears with a pair of big straight eyes, and features the comparative design of his Ball form, disjointed arms and legs, and multiple fresh teeth. His shoes are similar to those of his Ball form, with the expections of being smaller and thinner. Typically, he is depicted holding a hammer seperated from his hand and a digital display that displays a randomized number from 1-9. The effect varies depending on the shown number on the display.

In his Oil Panic form, Mr. Game & Watch is depicted wearing a helmet, a pair of large eyes, a gas-station uniform, a smaller nose, a pair of fresh human-like teeth, a pair of masculine shoes, and a disjointed arm. He is typically seen with a large bucket that can be filled with oil. Four other characters in Oil Panic are seen, such as Mr. Game & Watch with a large white smile and sewed eyes in a working outfit (a fedora hat and a bowtie). Another form of Mr. Game & Watch is seen in Oil Panic, with a smaller nose, a large body and ears, and is typically seen holding a large bucket where it can be filled with oil. A female version of Mr. Game & Watch is seen in Oil Panic, known as Mrs./Ms. Game & Watch, with a ponytail for her hairstyle, a long dress, a pointy nose, a pair of small circular eyes and a pair of heels. An officer/police-looking incarnation of Mr. Game & Watch is seen in Oil Panic, wearing a police/casual outdoor-looking outfit, depicted with a neck and a disjointed arm, which is holding a bell similar to the bell that belongs to the true incarnation of Mr. Game & Watch.

In his Chef form, Mr. Game & Watch is depicted in a chef-looking/cooking outfit and a smaller and thinner nose, along with fingers and a pair of sewed eyes. He is typically seen with a frying pan, which he can toss food out of.

Personality[]

First appearing in 1980, the Game & Watch series is the father of all portable liquid crystal games. The main character is simple and monochrome but has a timeless individuality. There are 39 different games in the series and they've sold over 43 million units worldwide. Pictured at left is the particularly popular Fire model.
~ The description in Mr. Game & Watch's trophy in Super Smash Bros. Melee, after completing Classic Mode.

Although Mr. Game & Watch is initially deemed to be an unorthodox and intimidating entity, Mr. Game & Watch appears to be kind-hearted, smart, brave and very cartoonish, as well as for being filled with heightened sense of intelligence, humor and confidence, as well as for being super cautius/careful in dangerous situations. While he seems to have a heroic and most likely friendly-looking epitome, he seems to be typically frowny and neutral, as his expression (in most official artworks in the Super Smash Bros. series) depicts him with either neutral/depressive or frowny-looking expressions. However, Mr. Game and Watch is unaware of the concept or understanding of good and evil, and doesn't revolt against him.

Mr. Game & Watch also lives an easygoing and happy life, especially in Superflat World (also referred as Flat Zone), being with good friends in the same universe, like Stanley the Fumigator, Mr. Juggler, Spitball Sparky, Vermin Exterminator, Manhole, Flagman and more. However, Mr. Game & Watch seems to behave choppy and erratic from certain occasions, as accompained by most of his movements featuring erratic/choppy frame-by-frames, and most of his movements involve him either tripping or walking/running in awkward positions. That being said, Mr. Game & Watch sometimes acts very wacky, as accompained in one of his victory poses in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Super Smash Bros. For Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, where he pounces about in erratic poses, ends up tripping halfway, before gaining his balance by teetering on a single foot, and then proceeds to jump back and forth, landing on his left foot, and then his forehead. This might prove that he is actually funny, cartoonish and somewhat a skilled comedian.

Curiosly, Mr. Game & Watch is also never heard of using ordinary speech. Instead, he "talks" in a series of bleep-blooping sound effects, matching the sound effects heard in the Game & Watch series. By the fans, however, if Mr. Game & Watch actually talks, he speaks in a echoed, rather somewhat teenage-like, and robotic-like voice.

History[]

Mr. Game & Watch lives in his own kind of universe, called Superflat World, where most likely typical things happen all around that universe, and where Mr. Game & Watch has "old-school" adventures. As the name implies, it is a completely flat world, featuring no third-dimension whatsoever. All of his other incarnations, including Stanley the Fumigator, Mr. Juggler, Spitball Sparky, Vermin Exterminator, Manhole and Flagman, also live in the same universe, as well as for other characters who additionally make their appearances in the same world, such as Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr. and Mickey Mouse.

Sypnosis in Subspace Emissary[]

Prior to the events of the Subspace Emissary, Tabuu has discovered the peculiar qualities of Mr. Game & Watch during the prologue. Inside Mr. Game & Watch's body resides a limitless quantities of Shadow Bugs, tiny and purple-colored particles that have the ability of self-duplication, or even create new dark creatures. Tabuu captured him, took advantage of the discoveries of Mr. Game and Watch's flat qualities to create the Subspace Army and duplicate him up to five times, and from this produced a nearly infinite supply of Shadow Bugs. He ordered the replications of Game & Watch to pilot the corrupted Halberd, the airship of Meta Knight, and utilize it to transport his army.

During the events of the Subspace Emissary, Solid Snake, Meta Knight and Lucario invade the airship and come across the piloting room, witnessing a quintet of false Mr. Game & Watches piloting the airship. The former instantenously charges at them and effortlessly knock all of them out the window, causing them to fall onto the Battleship's Bridge and interrupting Princess Zelda (disguised as Sheik), Fox McCloud and Princess Peach's tea party. The clones dissolve and form into Duon. He is fought by Snake, Lucario, Fox, Zelda/Sheik, Peach, and Falco Lombardi. After it is defeated by the aformentioned heroic fighters, it dissolves into Shadow Bugs, leaving behind a trophy of the true kind of Mr. Game & Watch. Fox prepares to shoot it with one final blow, but Peach revives it. Upon revival, Mr. Game & Watch looks around in a questionable manner, wondering where his location is until Peach scolds him for the trouble he created, causing him to glance down in shame. Then, Peach offers him her parasol to cheer him up, joining her team afterwards.

In the entrance of the subspace, the rest of the fighters confront Tabuu, including Mr. Game & Watch himself (after Tabuu defeats Ganondorf and Master Hand, who attempt to attack him prior to their arrival). Unfortunately, Tabuu unleashes his signature off waves to transform all of the other approaching fighters back to trophies, including Mr. Game & Watch among them. However, King Dedede, Ness, Luigi and Kirby were miraculously revived by the Dedede Brooches and collecting/reviving all of the trophies across their path of the Subspace, including Mr. Game & Watch. After so, he accompaines the rest of the fighters throughout the Great Maze and the final showdown of Tabuu.

After clearing the maze, the fighters approach Tabuu again, who prepares his off waves twice and attempts to effortlessly re-trophicate all fighters that violated his territory twice in a row. However, Sonic the Hedgehog suddenly comes in the scene, homes into Tabuu's wings and shatters them, preventing them from causing immediate trophication. Ultimately, Mr. Game & Watch and his fellow fighters defeat Tabuu. Upon his defeat, he shrieks and disintegrates as light energy erupts from him, causing the subspace to fade into nonexistence and the World of Trophies to get reincarnated back to their original locations, excluding the Isle of Ancients. Because of the plethora of detonated Subspace Bombs engulfing said isle, it is impossible for the Isle of Ancients to return. As such, it is claimed to be permanently erased from existence. Instead, it leaves a giant luminous cross in its place, where the rest of the fighters look at in triumph and victory, including Mr. Game & Watch (ringing his signature bell while looking at it).

She is an alternate form of the Black Cat's (which is actually Princess Shokora in her feline form) and serves as the shopkeeper of the Item Shop. She also appears as pictures on the walls of the level Hall of Hieroglyphs. A notable difference between Mr. Game & Watch and the Item Shopkeeper is that the shopkeeper has eyes.

Super Mario Odyssey[]

Mr. Game & Watch makes a cameo appearance in Super Mario Odyssey, where he makes a cameo role in the city challenges. Mr. Game & Watch does not make his appearance anywhere else other than the challenges in the city while progressing through the game.

Trivia[]

  • Mr. Game & Watch's nickname is "Game&Watch".
  • As Mr. Game & Watch is referred as "The Master of Two Dimensions," he is depicted to be two-dimensional in current events. In certain cases, he is depicted 3D instead.
  • Mr. Game & Watch, Kirby and Jigglypuff have the lowest crouching frames in all of the Smash Bros. franchise.
  • Mr. Game & Watch's "Classic Mode" artwork is a reference to how much years since the initial Game & Watch release in 2019 (39 years).
  • Mr. Game & Watch and Jigglypuff are the only two characters to have a deadly special attack that will KO opponents at all damage-precentages.
    • However, while Jigglypuff only has Rest, Mr. Game & Watch has a pair of moves (Judge, Oil Panic) that will 0% KO opponents.
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the first game of the series where Mr. Game & Watch’s official artwork shows him holding an object other than his signature bell, as he is instead holding the flag from Flagman.
  • Prior to Ultimate, one of Mr. Game & Watch's victory poses depicted hopping up to the air limitlessly. In Ultimate, Mr. Game & Watch juggles up to three balls in his Ball incarnation in one of his victory poses.
    • Comparatively, Mr. Game & Watch performs a single victorious jump in his down taunt in Brawl. In SSB4 onwards, Mr. Game & Watch sits down and sighs, huffing out a huge puff of breath. This originates from the Game & Watch version of Mario Bros., where Mario and Luigi relax after completing a level during said game.
  • In Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, Mr. Game & Watch's moveset was different than his one in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, such as his up aerial and his bomb initially being a packaged box from Super Mario Bros.
  • Although the Game & Watch was first released in 1980, Mr. Game & Watch didn't conceptually exist as a specific character until Super Smash Bros. Melee (2001). This has led to some debate over whether or not Mr. Game & Watch should be considered the same entity as the playable characters from the original Game & Watch handhelds.
    • That said, Mr. Game & Watch, as a representative character in the Smash Bros. series, is an amalgamation of different Game & Watch titles, so it is likely that he represents the entire Game & Watch brand rather than a specific game. This is further supported in Ultimate, where Mr. Game & Watch, for several of his moves, changes his appearance to resemble the character in the game from which the move originated.
  • Mr. Game & Watch and Falco Lombardi are the only characters who were available as unlockable in multiple Super Smash Bros. titles to consistently remain as unlockable in both versions of Super Smash Bros. 4.
    • Counting the two versions separately, they, along with Jigglypuff, are also tied for the most unlockable appearances in the series, with five.
