Mr. Gao is a supporting character in the 2022 Pixar film Turning Red. He is the old neighbor of the Lee Family as well as a shaman who performs the rituals of the spirit of the red panda.
He is voiced by James Hong who also voiced Mr. Ping in the Kung Fu Panda franchise.
History[]
Mr. Gao first appears when he plays chess at the Lee Temple. He is seen once again on his balcony when he surprises sees Mei in her red panda form as she returns to the temple.
Gao is seen again later in the film, the night before Mei's ritual and they have dinner with the Lee family. After talking with Mei, Mr. Gao prepares the ritual by tracing a circle on the ground as the adults chant. As the ritual begins Gao tells Mei to focus on their voices in order to be better guided to the astral plane. However, Mei refuses to part with her panda and breaks the ritual. She rebels and decides to go to the 4*Town concert and violently pushes her mother away. This enrages Ming who triggers his giant panda and goes to the SkyDome.
Gao, Wu, Jin and the aunts chase after her as Ming terrorizes the entire crowd during the concert. While the others take care of placing Ming in the circle, Gao climbs to the top of the bleachers to perform a new ritual. After a confrontation, Mei knocks Ming out and Wu and the aunts drag Ming into the circle and start singing. Mr. Gao tells them to sing with their hearts and they are accompanied by 4*Town and together give enough power to activate the circle. Afterwards, Gao raises her sword towards the moon and a flash of light is shot through her and strikes Ming in the forehead before she and the other pandas are sent to the astral plane. There, Mei and Ming reconcile and eventually Mei keeps her panda.
Mr. Gao is seen for the last time playing chess in the temple.
