Hero Overview

Money, money, money.
~ Mr. Krabs's typical catchphrase.
Hello, I like money!
~ Mr. Krabs

Eugene Harold Krabs, better known simply as Mr. Krabs, is a major character in Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants franchise.

He is a red sea crab who is the owner of the Krusty Krab as well as the employer of both SpongeBob SquarePants and Squidward Tentacles. He is extremely greedy, bossy, selfish, and quite literally obsessed with money itself. Mr. Krabs is mostly respected by SpongeBob, while Squidward tends to loathe him. Mr. Krabs' greed in the series is exaggerated with him often anthropomorphizing money. He will do almost anything to obtain money or not lose it, usually with no regard for the safety or well-being of others or even himself.

His arch-nemesis and business rival is Sheldon J. Plankton, who was his friend in their childhood but now constantly attempts to steal the Krabby Patty Secret Formula. Mr. Krabs has a daughter, a sperm whale named Pearl. Mr. Krabs is the main leader of the Krusty Crew since the beginning of the series.

Even though he is a lot of times an anti-hero and is cheap throughout the series, he does do some good and heroic things for SpongeBob and Squidward and he's now a good person after all despite some mistakes that he has to do for money. He can be fatherly to his adopted daughter Pearl. But he also did a lot of villainous acts.

He is voiced by Clancy Brown, who is best known for voicing as Raiden in the Mortal Kombat series, Otto from Super Robot Monkey Team Hyper Force Go!, Toilette Ree, The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants, Captain Black from Jackie Chan Adventures, George Stacy in The Spectacular Spider-Man, Hank Anderson in Detroit: Become Human, and Gavin in Solar Opposites.

Appearance

Mr. Krabs is an elderly red crab who has a very thick shell. He also has very tall eyestalks, a crinkled nose, large claws, and very short, pointy legs. He wears a light blue shirt and slackers with a black belt. When he comes out of his shell (like in some in "Shell of a Man," "Shell Shocked," and "Company Picnic"), he has a wrinkled pink body.

Origin

Eugene Harold Krabs was born on November 30, 1942 to Krabs Sr. and Betsy "Mama" Krabs as Eugene Harold Krabs. He grew up in a poor home, with few possessions and wearing patched up clothing and was mistreated by his classmates at school for his poverty. This may be what led to his fascination/obsession with money. However, continuity in the SpongeBob universe is flimsy at best, and another episode states Mr. Krabs began the Krusty Krab after an unnamed war.

Mr. Krabs' military service has been hinted at in other episodes, and its worth noting none of his old navy friends suggested that he had ever been cheap or money driven. So possibly his unhealthy fixation was latent during his younger years.

Mr. Krabs lives for two things: money and more money. He will literally do anything thing to either get money or save money.

He once forced an expired Krabby Patty that SpongeBob had found under the grill, on every customer because he thought throwing it out was a waste of money.

His obsession with money borders on insanity. He once saw SpongeBob pick up a penny off the sidewalk and tried everything thing from opening a fake movie theater, to throwing a fake fund raiser to get it from him. Finally he broke into SpongeBob's house to get the penny, when SpongeBob found him he said it wasn't a penny but a piece of gum for his dried gum collection. Appearing to let go of his penny obsession, left SpongeBob's house only to dig up his yard believing SpongeBob buried the penny.

Heroic Choices

Despite his avaricious and malicious behavior, Mr. Krabs has shown that he can be a good person deep down on multiple occasions.

Season 1

  • Help Wanted: He rewarded SpongeBob by hiring him as a fry cook.
  • Squeaky Boots: He felt guilty for taking SpongeBob's Squeaky Boots.
  • Pickles: He lets SpongeBob take the rest of the work day off after SpongeBob loses his confidence to Bubble Bass. The next day, he helps SpongeBob regain his confidence back so he can get back to making Krabby Patties.
  • F.U.N.: Mr. Krabs is (rightfully) suspicious of Plankton being changed for the better after the latter's time with SpongeBob. Later, at the movies, he appears in front of the projector and demanding everyone (including SpongeBob) in the theater to reach into their friend or partner's pocket to see what they have got. There, SpongeBob comes to realize that Plankton used him to get a Krabby Patty. Soon, after Plankton fails to escape with the Krabby Patty, Mr. Krabs takes the sandwich and SpongeBob apologizes for not believing his suspicion.
  • Hooky: He warned the Bikini Bottomites about the dangers of the hooks and "hooked" SpongeBob so that he realized the potential danger of not being able to be unhooked.

Season 2

  • Band Geeks: He, along with the Bikini Bottomites, tried to become the best band for Squidward.
  • Welcome to the Chum Bucket: He felt remorseful about betting SpongeBob's contact with Plankton.
  • Krusty Love: Mr. Krabs found a genuine love interest in Mrs. Puff and even spent $100,000 (albeit reluctantly) just for their date. With SpongeBob's help, he manages to impress her

Season 3

  • Born Again Krabs: He struck a deal with the Flying Dutchman for a second chance at life because he is a non-cheap, generous man, something that he did very well (until he discovered he had no money in the cash register).

Season 4

  • Shell of a Man: At the reunion with his old Navy buddies, after SpongeBob accidentally revealed himself, Mr. Krabs emerges from the bush that he had been watching from and reveals himself.
  • Selling Out: After Howard Blandy turned out to be a fraud (including making Krabby Patties with a synthetic substance, Mr. Krabs rescued the Krusty Krab crew from his influence.
  • Best Day Ever: When SpongeBob is sad about sacrificing his perfect day, he uses his money to try to cheer him up.

Season 5

  • What Ever Happened to SpongeBob?: He threatened Squidward to find SpongeBob by bribing him to give him a Fabergé egg due to Squidward's interest in art.

Season 7

  • Yours, Mine and Mine: Mr. Krabs stops the argument between SpongeBob and Patrick, saying that they should be ashamed for letting a toy get in the way of their friendship.

Season 8

  • Mr. Krabs Takes A Vacation: When two robbers try to rob the mint and threaten to harm the other tourists, Mr. Krabs defends them and uses SpongeBob to lasso them out of the Mint and into a police boat. This showcases that Mr. Krabs can care about others, not just money.

Season 9

  • Little Yellow Book: He actively chewed out Squidward for reading SpongeBob's diary and exploiting his secrets to humiliate the sponge. As he didn't laugh at SpongeBob, unlike the others, it also doesn't make him a hypocrite.
  • SpongeBob You're Fired: He relents and rehires SpongeBob after his own horrendous cooking almost destroys his business.
  • Jailbreak: When hearing Plankton is planning a jailbreak to steal the Krabby Patty Formula, Mr. Krabs hid the entire Bikini Bottom Police Officers inside his safe in order to arrest Plankton and the escapees.
  • What's Eating Patrick?: He teaches Patrick how to eat in order to win the eating contest.

Season 11

  • Call the Cops: Mr. Krabs feels guilty about hurting SpongeBob's feelings and gives him a hug.
  • Squid Noir: Mr. Krabs is concerned about his customers when Squidward is driving Mr. Krabs' customers batty while playing his awful clarinet performance at the Krusty Krab.

Season 12

  • The Krusty Bucket: He joined forces with Plankton to try and stop Plankrab's evil plan after he merged Krabs and Plankton's restaurant, the Krusty Krab and the Chum Bucket into the same restaurant. Also, he and Plankton stopped the red and green Plankrabs from fighting and caused them to melt. Krabs also squished Plankton to remove the hair from his mouth.

Season 13

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water

  • He was a super-hero known as Sir Pinch-a-Lot where he teams up with the other heroes to defeat an evil pirate named Burger-Beard and regain his secret Krabby Patty formula.

Powers and Abilities

  • Superhuman strength: Due to his experience as a navy cadet, Krabs is surprisingly strong, as he can lift the entire Krusty Krab building with little to no discomfort. Another feat of his strength was shown to throw Sandy's entire submarine in the episode "Surf N' Turf" while admitting that crabs are stronger than woodchucks, so this proves that Eugene is stronger than Sandy.
  • Business Skills: Thanks to his business skills, Krab's restaurant, the Krusty Krab, become one of the most successful restaurants in Bikini Bottom.
  • Durable Exoskeleton: Being a crab, Mr. Krabs possesses a strong exoskeleton that made him resistant to attacks, harm, or pain and temperature extremes, though episode Shell of a Man reveals that he would temporarily lose this due to him molting his shell as he went old. Also, there are limitations on how durable his exoskeleton is, as he sometimes treated in hospital and had the tip of his pincher claw broken.
  • Leadership: Mr. Krabs has a strong powerful role model of the group and he owns his own restaurant business for his employees and customers.
  • Pincher Claws: Also of a durable exoskeleton, he possesses pincher claws that provide him a strong grip that can potentially break someone's arm (though depending on the writer of the episode and the situation, his pinchers sometimes depicted in form of clawed fingers instead of regular crab pinchers).
  • Smell: Krabs possesses an extremely keen sense of smell that appeared to be equal with real-life dogs as he claimed that he can smell SpongeBob from extremely long distances.
  • Swordsmanship: Due to born with the blood of pirate, Krabs is a master swordsman who learned his skills from his grandfather, Redbeard.
  • Robotic Physiology: As Sir Pinch-A-Lot, he possesses robotic physiology where his natural abilities appeared to be enhanced to an unknown degree.
    • Rocket Claws: Sir Pinch-A-Lot can detach his robotic claws from his arms and fire them at opponents where the claws are powered by rockets. The rocket claws' firepower is strong enough to damage Burger Beard's ship and the claws also very durable due to the impact on the said ship leaving no scratch on them. Aside from weapons, the rocket claws can also used to pin enemies and able to return to his arm as well.
    • Boosters and Wheels: Sir Pinch-A-Lot can switch his legs for a wheel and a pair of rocket boosters as a means to travel from one place to another faster.

Weaknesses

  • Money and Greed: Krabs' greed with money, and viewing money as often anthropomorphic sometimes getting the best of him as well as potentially drove him to perform appalling acts just as meant to improve his business. This also worsened his rivalry with Plankton where Plankton was so appalled that he began to questioned how evil he was when comparing himself with Krabs. This can also cause him to neglect others or even his own life. He also is very stingy and cheap due to his greed even not wanting to spend a penny meaning his stinginess is worse than Patrick's.
  • Butter: In the second movie, Krabs was somewhat agitated when Burger Beard tries to blast him with a butter cannon in spite of the fact that he still able to survive the cannon's blast despite his durability. Though unconfirmed, this likely has something to do with him being traumatized by his near-death experience in Imitation Krabs.

Trivia

  • Krabs can also be, and rather often is, a villain depending on the episode, such as when he gets greedy.
    • Unfortunately, starting from Season 4 (referred to as the Post Movie Seasons), he became a villain protagonist as sometimes to when he became eviler than Plankton due to his greed toward money eventually drove him insane due to his obsession, where the show exaggerated his worst traits to the point of insanity (especially the episode One Coarse Meal, where his obsession for greed led him to terrify Plankton enough that the later trying to attempt suicide). Some episodes portrayed him as a Villain Protagonist regardless of how bloodthirsty and vile his deeds were.
      • Krab's negative portrayal due to the aforementioned exaggeration ultimately brought enough controversy that by the second half of Season 9 (the release of the second movie), this was eventually revised and he reverted to his Season 1 self, re-earning the love from fans. That said, some episodes portray him as a bit more depraved than he was during the first five seasons like the time he tried to get rid of and then kill Squidward for his art.
      • Though speculative, Krabs' Post-First Movie Seasons portrayal could be attributed to newer showrunners involved misunderstanding his character as much as the rest of the main cast. While they understandably shared fans and ex-fans' sentiment regarding his infamy (which didn't help by the anthropomorphic crab broke the law more often than Plankton), the same showrunners unfortunately only saw the worst in Krabs just as they found Plankton sympathetic enough to deserve the anti-heroic role that Krabs always had in the series proper. This in turn, explained his depraved actions throughout said seasons where some of them (ex. the aforementioned attempt to force Plankton to commit suicide) proved to be too out-of-character for him in some respects, even at his worst.
  • As noted by fans and suggested by writer/voice actor Doug Lawrence in the DVD commentary for the season one episode "Plankton!", the main cast of SpongeBob SquarePants were intended to represent the Seven Deadly Sins. In Krabs' case, he represented Greed through his money-grubbing habit that were unfortunately exaggerated in Post-First Movie Seasons to the point of him becoming one of the show's most controversial characters.
