Enough! Rigby's a screw-up, but discipline starts at the top. So here's what's gonna happen. One of you is gonna write a letter of resignation by 5 o'clock. No one leaves this office until it's done. And if you can't work it out, you're both fired!
~ Mr.Maellard threatening to fire both Rigby and Benson in "The Lunch Club" - also his most famous line.

Mr. Maellard is the overarching protagonist of Cartoon Network's animated series, Regular Show. He was the owner of the Park, Benson's late boss, the late Pops Maellard's late adoptive father, and the late Mrs. Maellard's late husband.

He was voiced by the late David Ogden Stiers, who also voiced Jumba Jookiba in the Lilo & Stitch franchise.

Appearance[]

Mr. Maellard is a Lollipop from Lolliland, like his son, Pops. He appears as a squat man with a wrinkled and warped round head, as well as greenish skin (his head slightly resembles the moon). He normally wears a black suit with a dark green scarf and uses a gold-tipped cane to walk with. He also has a brown pipe that is always in his mouth. He tends to be in a bad mood a majority of the time.

Personailty[]

Mr. Maellard seems to be pretty strict. Most of the time he always yells and gets mad at Benson, much like how Benson always yells and gets mad at Mordecai and Rigby. He is shown to be a very greedy businessman who cares little to none about his employees. This is clearly evident with his treatment toward Benson, as in Season 2, when he didn't even call Benson by his name and referred to him as Beanhead, Ball bucket, and Beanton. It is only after the end of the episode Benson Be Gone that he calls him Benson and gives him some appreciation. He almost always blames Benson for the problems that occur in the park even though it is due to the actions of Mordecai and Rigby, under the logic that since he's in charge it's his responsibility. However, Maellard does show a degree of care and affection towards Pops and does whatever he can to help him in certain situations for his son's growth.

Biography[]

Season 2[]

In "Dizzy", he forces his son Pops to make a speech in front of a crowd and forces Benson to help Pops prepare for the speech or he will be fired from his park manager position (alongside the other park employees). Pops successfully gave a very brief speech, which was to introduce a new statue in the park. Mr. Maellard congratulated Pops despite his son's lacking composure, and left.

In "Benson Be Gone", he plays the role of an antagonist and demotes Benson from the positon of park manager when Mordecai and Rigby crash his limo into his office. Blaming Benson for Mordecai and Rigby's actions, Maellard hires a woman named Susan, who proves to be much worse than Benson, when she turns all the park employees into clones of her, while Benson was gone talking to the former park manager that became a "full-time slacker". Benson returns to help his employees from Susan's influence by ordering his former employees to slack off so that they can regain their former selves.

Susan reveals herself to be a demon and turns into a giant, and Mr. Maellard arrogantly confronts her. Susan threatens him and picks him up, and Maellard begs Benson to help him, offering him his job back and the keys to his limo, but Benson's predecessor and recent friend Leon, the former park manager, sacrifices himself and drives his limo into Susan's high heels causing her to lose her balance and fall to her death,Saving Maellard, Benson, and the rest of the park employee's. Afterwards he thanks Benson for saving him.

Season 3[]

In "Busted Cart", he is seen with Benson when inspecting the park, while Mordecai and Rigby intervene when they crash an unmanned golf cart into a tree. Benson then screams at Mordecai and Rigby and Maellard screams at Benson himself, and brings him to his office. Once again deciding that he is responsible for the actions of Mordecai and Rigby, Mr. Maellard forces him to drive to the golf cart dealership across the country before the warranty expires otherwise he will be fired. Thankfully, despite several setbacks caused by Mordecai and Rigby's going to an arcade after promising to help Benson in order to make up for their mistake, the three manage to get the cart reparied on time.

Season 7[]

In "Lunch Club", he forces either Benson or Rigby to write a resignation letter after Rigby ruins a party at the park by sleeping on a lawn mower. He blames Benson for mismanaging, but decided to give them both the chance to resign. Eventually, he decides to keep both after Pops convinces him their contributions were valuable to the Park.

In "The Dome Experiment", he serves as the main antagonist in which he traps his employees (including Pops) in a dome to be experimented on, in exchanged for money by the government. After Benson figures it out, he and the rest of the park workers managed to escape from the dome, and are confronted by Maellard where he tells them that they finished the experiment. Mordecai asks him if the plan was to trap them with no warning, and Maellard confirms this. An angry Benson confronts Maellard and asks why he did it, to which he responds he did because he wanted to see what the park and its employees' would do in a zombie apocalypse. The employees don't buy this, so Benson threatens him and after some convincing from Pops, he admits that he put a dome on the park simply for more money, to which the Park employees finally get the hint. But before he leaves, he tells Benson he got the date wrong, and Benson cheers about him being right as Meallard and the other tanks leave.

Season 8 and Legacy[]

He passed away in the series finale 25 years after his son's death.

Trivia[]

  • His name appears to be a reference to the Maillard Reaction, a process important to the creation of hard candies such as himself.
  • Mr. Maellard used to mispronounce Benson's name as Beancan, Bert, Beanbag, Ball Bucket, Beanton, Bean Teen, and Beanson (both in "Dizzy" and "Benson Be Gone").
  • Mr. Maellard is the second family member to appear at the park; the first was Don, Rigby's younger brother.
  • He appeared in a few season three episodes, one of which was "Skips vs. Technology" (in a flashback). Another was "Think Positive".
  • Mr. Maellard's first name was never revealed.
  • He had a wife, who may have died, moved far away from the park, or is divorced with him, due to her never appearing in the present time.
  • He is mentioned in "Think Positive", as he puts his son, Pops, in charge of The Park when he's not around.
  • It was revealed that Mr. Maellard's yelling is worse than Benson's (in "Busted Cart"). In other words, Mr. Maellard yells more than Benson.
  • He pronounced Benson's name correctly in "Benson Be Gone", "Busted Cart", and "Limousine Lunchtime".
  • Mr. Maellard is the second-oldest character in the park next to Skips.
  • When Mr. Maellard was at a younger age, he was light pink like Pops. At his current age, however, he is light green instead of light pink. Although it was revealed in "The Ice Tape" that Pops is Mr. Maellard's adoptive son, yet Mr. Maellard himself could be from Lolliland, but isn't actually related to Pops. It could also be possible that Mr. Maellard's parents immigrated from Lolliland and that he was born on Earth, therefore possibly explaining why he was light pink at a younger age.
  • Mr. Maellard is at least 153 years old, and when he married his wife, he could have been at least 20 years old.
    • He could have been born sometime in 1859.
  • It is mentioned by Skips in "Limousine Lunchtime" that Mr. Maellard loves his Limousine almost more than he loves Pops. Although, this may be just an exaggeration by Skips.
  • Despite his harshness, he does seem to have a genuine love for his son, which shows that he isn't always a mean person.
    • When the park launched into space, he sheds a tear most likely for his son Pops.
    • When the park returns from space, he is seen crying after finding out the news about his son's death. He is also seen clearly devastated during Pops' memorial service.
  • It was revealed by Benson in "Take the Cake" that Mr. Maellard does not get surprised very easily.
    • Mr. Maellard also admits that he has always wanted to be in a coma by the end of the episode.
  • In Ice Tape, it is revealed that most his wealth came from selling meteor fragments in the past. It is also shown that he spoke like a stereotype gangster in his youth.
