Mr. Mxyzptlk is a character appearing in DC Comics and a major antagonist in the Superman comics and media.
He is a mischievous trickster able to manipulate reality and he takes pleasure in causing trouble for Superman and tormenting him. Despite this, he has been known to assist the heroes and offer his help to Superman on occasions. It is later revealed that Mr. Mxyzptlk is a singular being throughout the multiverse and is the same person in all realities, essentially meaning that he travels through numerous realities to be with Superman.
Mr. Mxyzptlk is an imp from the Fifth Dimension who enjoys causing mischief and has been bothering Superman for quite sometime out of sheer boredom and a hint of malevolence. Despite being banished to his own dimension whenever Superman tricks him into saying "Kltpzyxm", he keeps coming back as punishment does not have much of an effect on him. This is because Mxyzptlk has the ability to effortlessly evade any form of imprisonment or punishment that may have been enforced on him, and because saying his name backwards is a self-imposed rule he put onto himself. He can ignore it if he wants.
Heroic Acts[]
Despite his mischievous nature, Mr. Mxyzptlk has helped Superman from time to time again. While it sometimes may be out of pragmatism, he has been known genuinely to lend a hand to the Man of Steel when the situation calls for it.
In "World's Finest #123", he teams up with Bat-Mite and helps Batman, Robin, and Superman stop a menacing creature that they created.
In "World's Finest #169", even though he takes the form of Supergirl to fool around with her, he still does genuine heroic deeds during his time as her.
In "Superman #174", after getting scolded by Superman, Mr. Mxyzptlk becomes a superhero and defends Metropolis, becoming a hero for the people and becoming well loved.
In "Superman #407", he tries to warn powerless Superman about the tunnel ceiling going to fall on him and when Superman is knocked out, Mr. Mxyzptlk recruits Lois Lane, Perry White, and Jimmy Olsen to rescue Superman and assist him in defeating stone's vermiform.
In "Superman #421", he teams up with Superman to save Metropolis from his cousin and prevent him from terrorizing it any longer.
In "DC Comics Presents #34", he turns against Mr. Mind and willingly says his name backwards to undo all the effects he had done to assist the heroes and save Superman's life.
In "Superman: Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?", Mr. Mxyzptlk spent 2,000 years doing good deeds.
In "Batman and Superman: World's Funnest", even though he was responsible for the destruction of infinite realities and repeatedly tries to kill Bat-Mite, he makes up for it by befriending Bat-Mite and recreating everything after the destruction he caused.
In "Emperor Joker," after he is tricked by Joker into giving him his powers in which Joker becomes Emperor Joker and commits horrible atrocities, Mr. Mxyzptlk realizes the danger and teams up with Superman and the heroes, resulting in Mxy restoring the multiverse and saving countless lives. He saves some of Joker's creations and transfers them into the real world.
In "Countdown to Final Crisis 31#", he proclaims that the Fifth Dimension must be sealed off from outsiders to prevent Superboy-Prime from killing every living soul in the fifth dimension.
In "Wonder Woman #778", he teams up with Bat-Mite, Wonder Woman, Siegfried, and Ratatosk to defat Janus and save the world of Zrfff.
In "Adventures of Superman 646#, he aids Superman and risks his life to save Superman from Ruin by pushing Superman out of the way from a Kryptonite spear before vanishing.
In "DCeased: War of the Undead Gods #5", after realizing the immense threat posed by Darkseid's Anti-Life army, Mr. Mxyzptlk chooses to assist Superman in thwarting his plans and stopping him. After arriving on Bolovax Vik with Superman and members of the Green Lantern Corps, Mxy attempts to defeat Darkseid despite ultimately failing.
In "Superman/Batman #25", he helps Batman, Superman, and the rest of heroes by summoning Superman and the Supergirls to fight off the Superman villains and defeat the Joker. Mxy manages to free Bat-Mite who was trapped inside of Joker and the two imps return everything to normal, and they teleport everyone who doesn't need to be there away. Mxy also explains that he wanted to show that Batman and Superman need each other.
Personality[]
Mr. Mxzyptlk spends his time playing pranks and messing with Superman, whom he considers an entertaining target. While he is generally humorous and lighthearted, it is important not to underestimate him, as he has shown to have a lot of potential and can be a formidable foe. His actions range from harmlessly transforming people into animals to trapping people in the Phantom Zone and tormenting them to make them miserable for all of eternity. Even though he is a bother to Superman, Supergirl, and their companions, Mr. Mxyzptlk is not usually malicious. Surprisingly, he has assisted Superman in certain situations, demonstrating his unexpected sense of integrity. There are instances where he even serves as a guide to Superman, aiding him in coping with the pressures of being a superhero. It has been revealed that Mxy has a genuine concern for Superman and is prepared to endure humiliation and defeat in order to protect him from harm or death. His relationship with Superman is rather complicated, but Mxy continues to cause lighthearted chaos frequently for him.
