Sam Wing is the overarching protagonist of the Gremlins franchise. He is an old Chinese man who owned Gizmo for a good few years, ever since he was 10 years old. He passed away in Gremlins 2, leaving Billy to own Gizmo.

He was portrayed by the late Keye Luke for both movies and voiced by Izaac Wang, who also voiced Buon in Raya and the Last Dragon.

Biography[]

Gremlins[]

Mr. Wing was an old Chinese man who kept Gizmo in his store until Randall Peltzer managed to buy the Mogwai when Mr. Wing's grandson gave it to him so that he could get 200 dollars from Peltzer because that Wing needs the money, indicating that Mr. Wing and his grandson are poor. Later, Gizmo was returned to the store by Wing and was kept there.

Gremlins 2: The New Batch[]

Mr. Wing passed away just six weeks after the beginning of Gremlins 2: The New Batch. He believed television is an invention for fools, and turned off the TV that Gizmo was watching after it had been given to him as a gift by Daniel Clamp, whom had approached him with an offer to give him a small shop in his yet-to-be built shopping mall, which was going to be built where Wing's store was located. Six weeks later, Mr. Wing passed away, leaving Gizmo sad and alone, and allowing Clamp's mall construction project to move forward.

Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai[]

Mr. Wing (referred to by his first name Sam) serves as the main protagonist of this series, which is set in 1920, which makes the series take place approximately 64 years before the events of Gremlins.

In the series, Sam is a 10-year-old boy who lives in Shanghai with his parents Hon and Fong and his grandfather (known simply as Grandpa) and helps out at his family's medicine shop.

The series also reveals how Sam met Gizmo, which was during a visit to a circus with Grandpa where Gizmo was one of the acts. After Grandpa recognizes Gizmo as a Mogwai, Sam retrieves him from the circus and takes him to the shop where Grandpa states that they must return Gizmo to his homeland The Valley of Jade. However, during this conversation, Sam accidentally spills water onto Gizmo, causing him to sprout four Mogwai, which the family place in a chest.

Soon after, a man named Riley Greene alongside his servant; a young girl named Elle and three henchmen enter the shop demanding Gizmo. Sam and his parents watch on as Grandpa uses magic to knock down the henchmen. Grandpa then attempts to use the magic on Riley too, but Riley manages to use his own magic to overpower Grandpa and trap him in a pearl, which he then eats, much to the horror of Sam, his parents, Gizmo and Elle. Sam, Fong and Gizmo (who is placed inside a travel box previously used by Grandpa) flee the shop with the other Mogwai with Elle and two of the henchmen in pursuit whilst Ho is captured by Riley and the remaining henchman. Sam, Fong and Gizmo manage to evade the trio by hiding in an alleyway. Fong decides to lead the henchmen away from Sam and instructs him to get the mogwai to The Valley of Jade. The mogwai in the chest start to become restless and Sam watches as Gizmo sings, which makes the other mogwai relax and go to sleep. He then begins to cry over the lose of Grandpa and the separation from his parents before being comforted by Gizmo. Just as one of Sam's tears nearly lands on him, Gizmo (not wanting to get wet and spawn anymore mogwai) moves out of the way and knocks over the travel box, causing a book to fall out and land on a page showing a map of the Valley of Jade, with Sam saying that he does not think that he will be able to get Gizmo there. The pair then fall asleep in the alleyway. However as they do so, the other mogwai escape from the chest and go into a nearby restaurant and eat the food there after midnight. At daybreak, Sam wakes up and sees Gizmo wandering away to look for the other mogwai and quickly puts him back into the travel box and speaks of how there are people looking for Gizmo and the dripping water and bright lights in the city and how he had promised Grandpa that he would keep Gizmo safe. Sam and Gizmo later enter the restaurant the other mogwai went to and find the place in ruins and see four cocoons, which Sam learns from Gizmo are what happens to mogwai when they eat after midnight. Just then, Riley arrives with Elle and demands that he hands over Gizmo to him, but Sam refuses after what Riley did to Grandpa. Riley explains to Sam that after digesting Grandpa, he learnt everything he knew, including Sam's plan to travel to the Valley of Jade, before immobilizing Sam and taking Gizmo, with the intention of going to the Valley of Jade himself, claiming that Sam is too scared to go it alone and that deep down, Grandpa doubted that Sam could what he asked of him. Before, Riley can do anything to Sam, Elle turns against Riley and knocks him out, breaking Sam free from being immobilized and declares that she will come with Sam and Gizmo. However, Sam and Gizmo are distrustful of her because she led Riley to Sam's family's shop, resulting in what had happened to Grandpa, Ho and Fong, though Elle states that she did not know that Riley would do those things. Elle makes a deal with Gizmo that when she gets him to the Valley of Jade, she would like enough of it's treasure to outrun Riley for the rest of her life. When Sam is still distrustful, Elle tells him that Riley will come after both of them and states that she, Sam and Gizmo are on the same side and that she can get them to the Valley of Jade. After Sam accepts Elle's deal, she takes him and Gizmo to her underground base and says that she will send a message to Ho and Fong (who have been placed in a magic prison by Riley) that he will get Gizmo to the Valley of Jade and later rescue them. Sam, Gizmo and Elle then travel to a train station to go to Fengdong (known as the Ghost City). The trio are pursued by one of Riley's henchmen, but Elle fights him off before she, Sam and Gizmo jump on top of a train travelling to Fengdong.

Trivia[]

  • Mr. Wing died in the second film. He was portrayed by the late Keye Luke. When Keye Luke realized that his character will die in the second film, he said, "Remember, in Gremlins 3, I'm a flashback!". He wasn't named in the first film and was only called "grandfather". However, his name as Mr. Wing was revealed in the second film. Gizmo was wearing a red and black wristband on his arm between after the first film and the start of the second film until Mohawk ripped it off. It is most likely Mr. Wing who put the red wristband on Gizmo's arm. He regularly keeps Gizmo locked in a cage. However, after he died, Gizmo is seen with the cage doors open, possibly meaning that he let Gizmo free before dying.
  • Mr. Wing makes an appearance in Gremlins 2: The New Batch (video game) where he aids the player with four different items, at the price of crystal balls, one or two crystal orbs that are released and collectible after defeating a stage enemy. Gizmo is a customer to Mr. Wing in the video game, while in the movies, he is a non-purchasable creature who lives in Mr. Wing's store.
