	~ Mrs. Anabel's last message to Martha, written on the map she gave her with the directions to cross the Westalian border.

Mrs. Anabel is a minor, yet pivotal character in the Love and War Arc of the Spy × Family series. She's an elderly woman who lives in a cottage by herself and her dog, Baron, in a region near the border of Westalis and Ostania. Despite being on opposite sides in the conflict, Anabel was responsible for saving an injured Martha Marriott during the war between the two countries, with her nursing her back to health and, later, helping her go back safely to her homeland in Ostania.

Personality[]

In the short period she spent under her care, Martha describes Anabel as being a rather dour and cold person who was always scowling. Beneath her cold exterior, however, it appears that she had a good heart as she took care of Martha, tended her wounds and fed her, despite knowing she was an Ostanian soldier, even advising her to not show off her face due to the growing anti-Ostanian sentiment in Westalis. It appears that she became more hardened after her daughter's tragic death in the war. An event that made her sympathize more with those in the battlefield, no matter their side.

Despite this, Anabel is shown to be rather harsh in her resentment. In spite of her act of kindness to Martha, it appears she's still somewhat xenophobic towards the East, calling Ostania a "pathetic country" for sending young people like Martha in the front lines. Despite this, she still shows sympathy towards the people who live there and is willing to put any prejudice against the country aside in order to help those in need, as seen with how she dealt with Martha.

Background[]

Nothing much is known about Anabel's past, except for the fact that she used to have a daughter and a husband. It is said that her daughter served in the war in some way and that she died tragically in the year prior to her encounter with Martha, with Anabel mentioning her right leg being the only thing that made it home. Ever since then, Anabel lived alone in a cottage located on an area near the border between the two countries, her only company being her pet dog, Baron. According to her words, the village she lives in was populated mostly by Westalian refugees from the war whose homes burnt down, which may imply might have been her case as well. Despite the circumstances, she appeared to be living a peaceful, albeit grief-stricken life.

Trivia[]

Although Anabel mentions her daughter's passing, it is unknown what actually happened to her husband. It is implied that he might have been in the navy, given that he appears in their family picture wearing a sailor's uniform, so it's possible that he might have died in the conflict as well.
