Ms. Chalice, also known as the Legendary Chalice, is the deuteragonist of the 2017 run and gun video game, Cuphead. She serves as one of the playable characters in the 2022 DLC sequel, The Delicious Last Course.
She was formerly a specter who haunted the three mausoleums located across the Inkwell Isles and would grant Cuphead and Mugman special abilities, known as Super Arts, should the duo defeat all the ghosts inside each mausoleum. However, she later gains a young physical form during The Delicious Last Course to assist Chef Saltbaker gather ingredients to make a Wondertart for Ms. Chalice to retain her physical body, which became successful after Chef Saltbaker redeems himself and Ms. Chalice is seen in her physical form at the climax of the DLC credits.
Appearance[]
As the Legendary Chalice, she is a golden, anthropomorphic and posthumous ghost chalice (often confused for a trophy) who has a beauty mark located on her left cheek, a bluish-tinted transparent body, and a straw-like halo above her head, indicating that she is deceased and is now a ghost of her predecessor. She also wears white gloves with golden cuffs and red lipstick (although the lipstick is not worn during The Delicious Last Course).
A statue of her located in "Rugged Ridge" that portrays her while she was alive indicates that she also wore a toga and high heels. She also assumes and regains this corresponding appearance while using one of her Super Arts.
As Ms. Chalice, she is still a anthropomorphic chalice, but she no longer wears lipstick and her beauty mark is positioned to her right cheek (although it would occasionally reappear on her left one). She also bares a further resemblance to Cuphead and Mugman, having the same relatively short height and youthfulness as them, with a substance of unknown liquid and a straw being stored in her head. Her attire consists of white gloves, a blue skirt with white bloomers underneath, and a pair of golden shoes.
In the bad ending with the Devil, Ms. Chalice's appearance dramatically changes. As a demonic chalice, her mixture of light blue and gold coloration changes to pink and she now has a bitten straw, like Cuphead, her left handle is broken, like Mugman, and she now has demonic yellow eyes with black and red pupils, a maniacal smile, and sharp teeth. Her eyelashes seem to be missing.
Personality[]
The Legendary Chalice is wise and helpful. She is especially generous as evidenced by the fact that she willing grants Cuphead and Mugman special abilities, known as Super Arts, after saving her inside each of the mausoleums. It is apparent that she spent a long lifetime searching for a method of self-resurrection and was thrilled when she temporarily regained a physical body as Ms. Chalice. However, she does not desire to sacrifice lives to achieve such goals.
Furthermore in the Delicious Last Course, Ms. Chalice appears to be cheerful and optimistic, albeit manipulative person, shown in a prime example of tricking Mugman into devouring an astral cookie to swap positions with him during the opening cutscene of the DLC. Even with this, she is also shown to be relentlessly selfless and compassionate to others, as she is willing to give up her pursuit of the Wondertart after learning it requires a realistic soul to be created, and was delighted to have made a pair of new friends instead, those being Cuphead and Mugman.
Biography[]
Cuphead[]
The Legendary Chalice can be found inside three mausoleums within the Inkwell Isles, one in each respective section. Inside, she will cry out for help from the brothers inside an urn, which the brothers must defend from hostile and pink ghosts that can all be parried.
The ghosts will not harm the brothers, but they can only be defeated by parrying them, as indicated by their pink colors. Each mausoleum introduces different ghosts that have different movement patterns or require multiple parries in order to defeat them. Once all the ghosts have been defeated by being parried, the Legendary Chalice will emerge from the urn. She will thank the brothers for their assistance and grant them a special ability, known as a "Super Art."
The Delicious Last Course[]
The Legendary Chalice becomes a playable character as Ms. Chalice in the DLC sequel, The Delicious Last Course. She can be summoned by using the Astral Cookie Charm to replace the player's current playable character. Ms. Chalice begins each stage with a default of 4 hit points instead of three and can make usage of unique abilities that the brother's cannot perform themselves, such as a double jump and an evasive roll. Her attacks during aeroplane-exclusive stages also have different functionality.
Synopsis-wise, the Legendary Chalice meets with Cuphead and Mugman on Inkwell Isle IX to announce her amazing news to share and it all had to involve a special cookie she was holding. Mugman takes a bite of a cookie, which suddenly causes him to become a ghost and brings Ms. Chalice back to life. Thrilled that she was alive again, Chalice leads both boys to the one who made the cookie while explaining that, until just now, she had tried her biggest efforts to leave the astral plane without such success. The trio access a bakery where Chalice introduces them to Chef Saltbaker, the finest baker in all the lands, before she and Mugman immediately revert to their previous positions, much to Ms. Chalice's disappointmemt. Saltbaker remarks that the cookie's effects were only a temporary solution to Ms. Chalice's predicament and tells the trio that he can make a pastry, titled the Wondertart, that can give them control over the astral plane, which would restore Chalice to life without the requirement to switch forms with someone else, but first, they must gather each of the five ingredients that are being guarded somewhere on the island.
After the heroes obtain all the ingredients required to materialize the Wondertart, Chef Saltbaker reveals that he lacked the intention on assisting Ms. Chalice and plans to sacrifice one of their souls to complete the pastry and reap control of the astral plane himself. However, the heroes foil Saltbaker's plot and destroy his bakery before Chalice decides to find another method to revive herself. She then embraces Cuphead and Mugman, reminding them that the duo can still eat the cookie she gave them to call for her help whenever it is required.
In the epilogue, Chef Saltbaker ends up in imprisonment, but after finishing his sentence of community service, he redeems himself and successfully finds a method to revive Ms. Chalice permanently without the requirement for sacrifice through unknown means.
