Ms. Chalice is one of the two deuteragonists (alongside Elder Kettle) of the Netflix series adaptation of the 2017 video game Cuphead, The Cuphead Show!.
She is voiced by Grey DeLisle, who also voiced Mandy, Daphne Blake, Sam Manson, Frankie Foster, Kitty Katswell, Yumi Yoshimura, Wubbzy, Lola, Lana and Lily Loud, Frida Suárez, Brianna Buttowski, Betsy, Emily Elizabeth Howard, Puppycorn, Roxanne, Caroline Howard, and Dorothy Gale.
Appearance[]
Ms. Chalice is an anthropomorphic chalice who bares a resemblance to Cuphead and Mugman, with milk and a straw being stored in her head. She has visible eyebrows, a beauty mark on her right cheek, and her attire consists of white gloves, white shirt collar, a greenish blue skirt with white bloomers underneath, and a pair of golden high-heels.
Personality[]
Ms. Chalice is depicted as a street-smart mischief maker who uses her charms to get what she wants. This can range from performing a song and dance for others, to playing the role of a begging victim.
Chalice initially claims she doesn't need help from anybody and doesn't need friends, though she later admits that she enjoys spending time with Cuphead and Mugman, and that she gets lonely sometimes. It's shown toward the end of the third season that she grew up as an orphan in a terribly strict orphanage where she and the other children were forced to work and not allowed "fun of any kind." This led to her planning and successfully executing an escape from the orphanage, and afterward began her life as a charming con artist. Growing up on the streets with only her wits and talent to get by on may be part of the reason she seemed to be opposed to the idea of working with others at first, though she later very willingly works with the brothers to accomplish several things, which seems to indicate that she's outgrown her feelings of needing to get by on her own.
Chalice is confident, bold, and eager to take on a challenge. She also shows a lot of empathy toward Cuphead and Mugman, especially when they wind up in trouble because of her antics. However, that doesn't stop her from encouraging them to get up to mischief anyway.
Biography[]
Background[]
As revealed in the episode "Dance with Danger", Ms. Chalice was once an orphan who lived in a strict orphanage managed by penguin matrons. However, through her mundane tasks she eventually developed a love for rhythm and tap dancing, angering the matrons who would put her to do more chores so one day, she steals all the matrons' rulers, constructs a glider and escapes.
Now all alone on the streets, Ms. Chalice struggles to find a means to support herself until whilst accidentally dancing, she charms a man into giving her a dollar. Learning the power of charisma, Ms. Chalice begins using her charm and dancing to trick people into giving her things such as money and food. However, one day whilst dancing, she gets run over by a tram and killed.
Ending up in hell for her misdeeds, Chalice realizes she's a ghost and meets The Devil, who, noting her desperation for legs to dance with, decides to propose a deal to her: he will revive her, allowing her to switch from being a ghost to a living being whenever she wants, but at a cost she will have to repay him later. Accepting the deal, Chalice is transformed back to her living form, and, after being asked to return his wallet, the Devil sends her back in the realm of the living, although Henchman soon realizes she stole his wallet as well.
The Cuphead Show![]
In "In Charms Way", she first meets Cuphead and Mugman after they follow her out of a movie theater, and decides to teach them how to persuade people with their charisma. She eventually leads them to a cookie factory, where they sneak in and help themselves to the cookies inside. However, Chalice unknowingly triggers a silent alarm which alerts the authorities and soon gets them surrounded by police. Not wanting to get caught, Chalice regretfully abandons her new friends Cuphead and Mugman by turning into a ghost and exiting though a wall.
In "Charmed & Dangerous", she angers a mob of people who decide to hunt her down, causing her to hide at Elder Kettle's house with Cuphead and Mugman, who had escaped prison in the previous episode. When the mob arrive, she reveals to have the ability to change her appearance from physical form to her ghost form. She bids farewell to Cuphead and Mugman, saying she needed to hide until the heat dies down.
In "The I Scream Man", when Mugman daydreams that he is a pirate, he sees Ms. Chalice as one of his crewmembers.
In "Dead Broke", she later returns when she takes the boys to get ice cream, but they are unable to pay for it. So they use her ghost powers to scam people to get money from them. All goes well, until the they go to a house that’s really haunted by a group of elderly buzzard siblings called the Birmbaum Quadruplets. They eventually trap them in a painting and leave to go get their ice cream, not knowing that they left their piggy bank filled with all the money they scammed from other people in said painting.
