NOTE: This article is about the incarnation of Nami from the 2023 television series. The mainstream version can be found here.

Luffy: So why did you decide to become a thief?
Nami: I didn't decide. I needed to eat. You do what you have to, to survive.
~ Nami to Luffy.
I'm gonna draw a map of the world.
~ Nami's dream.

Nami is one of the main protagonists of the live-action series One Piece, based on the anime/manga franchise of the same name.

She is an enigmatic thief who hides her past behind an aggressive indifference in search of a map to the Grand Line, where the One Piece is strongly rumored to be. She has taken it upon herself to navigate and map out the entire world.

She is portrayed by Emily Rudd (who also voices Marcille Donato in Delicious in Dungeon), and by Lily Fisher as a child. In the Japanese dub, she is voiced by Akemi Okamura, who also voices her in the anime series.

Appearance[]

Nami is an attractive young woman with red hair, bright blue eyes, medium height, and a healthy physical build consisting of broad shoulders, thin arms, wide thighs, and a thick but not bulky chest.

Personality[]

Nami presents herself as an inveterate seductress, having no qualms about fooling men with her charms. Due to her traumatic childhood, Nami has been determined to steal more and more money to buy back her home village, to the point where she appears quite indifferent and cold to the world, but it's just a facade. She has a very negative opinion of rich people, seeing them as people who have comfort and ease that others cannot have, a feeling that changes after meeting the friendly Kaya.

She originally had a deep hatred of pirates, which didn't fully extend to Luffy because Nami only saw him as an overconfident clown with dreams of becoming the Pirate King. She also showed herself to be similar to Zoro in their habit of expressing themselves in a negative point of view. After Arlong thwarted her dogged efforts to raise the money to buy Cocoyasi, Nami emotionally broke down, showing that she is much more than an abrasive thief. After Arlong was defeated, Nami began to become more open to others.

Biography[]

Along with Nojiko, Nami was an orphan who survived a pirate attack until they were found by the marine soldier Bell-mère, who subsequently gave up her career to raise the two girls in Cocoyasi Village. As she grew up, young Nami developed a habit of taking what wasn't hers due to growing up in a very poor family, something Bell-mère didn't tolerate. During one such confrontation with her adoptive mother, Nami coldly dared to say that neither Nojiko nor Bell-mère were her family, leading Bell-mère to slap her. Bell-mère later comforted a crying Nami, and the two reconciled.

One day, the village was invaded by Arlong and his fish-man pirates, who immediately forced the inhabitants to pay a heavy individual tribute or be killed. Confronted by Arlong, Bell-mère paid for herself, but the vile fish-man noticed extra cutlery on the table, indicating that the former marine didn't live alone and consequently forced her to pay more for her two daughters. Bell-mère chose to trade places with Nojiko and Nami as she didn't have enough money, leading Arlong to execute her before the horrified eyes of her adoptive sisters.

Traumatized but eager to free Cocoyasi, Nami asked Arlong to join her crew, proving herself gifted at drawing nautical charts like no other, a talent that greatly interested Arlong. Despite his hatred and contempt for humans, Arlong allowed the little girl to join the Arlong Pirates, but Nami imposed the condition that she be able to redeem Cocoyasi one day, which Arlong only agreed to at the cost of 100,000,000 berries. Thus, Nami became a notorious thief from childhood to adulthood.

Season 1[]

In a small boat without sails or oars, Nami tricks two pirates into stealing their rowboat and heading to Shells Town, where Nami covets the Grand Line map stored in the local Marine base. Stopping at a bar, she seduces a Marine officer before taking advantage of a fight between Roronoa Zoro and some Marines to knock her victim unconscious and steal her uniform. While searching the base, she is confronted in the map warehouse by the officer on duty and the Marine she stole, forcing her to knock them unconscious. She immediately encounters the budding pirate Monkey D. Luffy, who also covets the map. Reluctantly, the two team up to reach Colonel Morgan's office where their map is located. The alarm raised as Nami attempts to open the safe where the map is kept, the unlikely duo is forced to take the safe with them, causing them to fall into the courtyard where they confront the base's soldiers. With Zoro's help, they defeat the Marines and Morgan and escape Shell Town in Nami's boat. This adventure causes Luffy to consider them a pirate crew, to which Nami and Zoro disapprove.

As night falls, Nami struggles to open Morgan's safe despite Luffy's antics. When she finally succeeds, the trio's conversation turns to the Grand Line and One Piece, which Nami doesn't believe exists. Unfortunately, the three are put to sleep by a sleeping gas released by a pirate ship. They wake up captive of the Buggy Pirates, with Captain Buggy the Clown confronting them for stealing the Grand Line map he's been coveting for months. Nami manages to escape by using Luffy as a diversion, only to stop in horror when she sees what Buggy has done to the local village, resulting in his capture again. With Nami locked in a birdcage and Zoro tied to a wheel in the same room while Buggy tortures Luffy, Zoro berates Nami for leaving them behind earlier, to which Nami claims it was the best option given the outnumbered. She manages to pick the lock and free Zoro, before helping to fight Buggy. Taking advantage of Buggy's ability to split his body, they defeat him by locking his pieces in chests.

Arriving at the Gecko Islands shipyard to try to obtain a boat capable of sailing the Grand Line, Nami considers stealing one of the boats, but Luffy refuses, instead choosing a boat with a face of a preying goat. The young man in charge of this boat, Usopp, an insecure smooth-talker, suggests they go talk to the shipyard owner, Kaya, about purchasing the boat. At Kaya's mansion, Nami quickly forms a negative impression of the person living there. For dinner, Nami struggles to find a dress to suit her, not helped by the boys' comments. The red dress she finally chooses is revealed by Kaya to be her late mother's. After dinner, Nami begins ransacking the mansion, only to accidentally burst into Kaya's room. While Kaya sees through her, the two eventually become friends. Things escalate when Kaya's butler turns out to be the pirate Kuro, who has been patiently waiting for Kaya to come of age to kill her. Fortunately, Nami and her friends are able to defeat Kuro and his henchmen. In gratitude, Kaya gives them the ship Luffy names Going Merry. Usopp also joins the crew.

Leaving Gecko Islands, the quartet is attacked by Vice Admiral Garp, Luffy's grandfather. They manage to escape and stop for lunch at the Baratie restaurant boat. Nami uses her charm to get a table, she also wins over Sanji, the waiter who is madly in love with pretty girls. That evening, the Warlod Dracule Mihawk, sent by Garp, comes to meet Nami, Zoro, and Usopp, wanting to capture Luffy. Zoro comes to challenge Mihawk and a fight ensues the next day. Nami is afraid for Zoro, even more so when Zoro willingly allows himself to be wounded in the chest by Mihawk after losing. Although Mihawk gives up on capturing Luffy, the crew worries about the survival of a badly injured Zoro. Later, the Arlong Pirates land at the Baratie, wanting to retrieve the Grand Line map. Defeated by Arlong, Luffy discovers Nami's true allegiance, and she simultaneously abandons her "friends" to return to Arlong Park with Arlong.

Since Cocoyasi is behind on its payments, Arlong sends Nami to collect the money, well aware that the locals view her as a traitor. There, in addition to Nojiko, who now has nothing but contempt for her adoptive sister, Nami meets Luffy, Zoro, Usopp, and Sanji again, only for her to angrily dismiss them, declaring that she was never one of them. Back at Arlong Park, she informs Arlong that she has gathered the money to buy Cocoyasi as agreed upon. The fish-man accepts his end of the deal, but when Nami leaves to collect the money, he sends the corrupt Navy Captain Nezumi after her. Digging up her treasure, Nami is attacked by Nojiko, the location being next to their mother's grave. Before the bloodshed, Nami manages to make Nokijo understand that she sacrificed herself to prevent the destruction of Cocoyasi by joining the fish-men. No sooner does Nojiko understand than Nezumi seizes the treasure, leaving Nami to collapse in tears, all her efforts now wasted. She resorts to stabbing herself at the Arlong Pirates tattoo she's had on her shoulder since childhood. Still not leaving, Luffy assures his former navigator that he will make Arlong pay for his misdeeds. Storming Arlong Park, Nami and Luffy confront Arlong, who expresses his hatred of humanity stemming from centuries of slavery and mistreatment of his people. The second battle between Luffy and Arlong ensues, with Nami watching the whole thing. The confrontation ends with the destruction of Arlong Park and Arlong's defeat, buried beneath the rubble. While the entire village of Cocoyasi celebrates the end of oppression, Nami begins to mend her relationships with her friends. Unfortunately, they find themselves surrounded by Garp and his soldiers, determined to arrest them despite the Arlong Pirates' involvement. However, Garp eventually gives up on their capture after fighting his grandson and comes to respect his determination.

The next day, Nojiko urges Nami to continue the adventure with Luffy and the others. Back at sea, the now Straw Hat Pirates set sail for the Grand Line, more determined than ever to fulfill their dreams, with Nami wanting to draw a map of the world.
