Aey!
~ Nana performing Ice Shot, in the Super Smash Bros. series.

Hey, guys! It's Ice Climbers. Well, I'll show you how to move. Get rhythm with your friends and rock the iceberg!
~ Nana
Yup!
~ Nana's famous catchphrase.
noicon

Nana is the deuteragonist of Nintendo's video game franchise, Ice Climber. Nana is Popo's fellow twin partner, and serves as the younger twin girl and sidekick of the pioneer mountaineer duo, the Ice Climbers. Nana is typically dressed in a pink inuit parka outfit, and wields a wooden mallet as her sole weapon for combat.

To fittingly reflect her characteristic leitmotifs, Nana, true to her epitome as a pioneer mountaineer, seeks to scale various glacial and enormous mountains, yet must also avoid various obstacles and antagonists during their routes to each summit. In order to successfully accomplish each level, Nana and Popo must catch a vegetable-stealing condor. In her illustrious timeline, Nana, alongside Popo, has pursued the aforementioned condor who, peculiarly, had possession of cucumbers, eggplants, and various other vegetables, while fending off Polar Bears, Nitpickers and Topis along their routes. Meanwhile, Nana also had to be sentient of other destructive and threatening obstacles while scaling those mountains, such as falling stalagmites of ice, known as icicles, and strong gusts of wind.

Nana, alongside Popo, is voiced by Sanae Kobayashi, who also voiced Kaede in Elfen Lied, Allen Walker from D.Gray-man, Reiko Natsume from Natsume's Book of Friends and Alexis Rhodes from Yu-Gi-Oh! GX.

Physical appearance[]

Nana is a short, young and tomboyish girl whose genuine appearance is identical to Popo, with the exceptions being Popo's blue coloration being replaced with a light shade of pink, and Nana's hair being much smoother and halting near the middle. Nana wears a pink wintertime inuit parka outfit, has brunette and smooth waist-length hair, possesses blushing pink cheeks visible on her face, and is proficient in using her mallet, her primary weapon for defense.

She also wears brown gloves, white boots with wooden soles and ice cleats underneath them, attached by pink boot-straps, and has long black eyes that are almost typically depicted with a white shine. Thus, these traits collectively make Nana somewhat identical to Kirby. Additionally, her boots and hammer also appear to be covered in light-powdered snow. Her parka's hood resembles the Freeze Copy Ability's hat Kirby can collect, only being pink.

On the official North American box artwork of Ice Climber, however, Nana's inuit parka is ironically colored red, and her in-game sprite's parka is more of a maroon. This was due to inconsistent coloring.

Personality[]

Nana is fittingly characterized as a Genki Girl — being an enthusiastic and forthcoming little girl who dwells in assurance more than her twin partner, Popo. Nana is a thrill-seeking and cautious sidekick whose personality is ironically reminiscent of an adolescent, despite living in her early childhood, like Popo. However, she is often dimwitted and misguided due to her younger appearance in comparison to Popo's. She also tends to be occasionally stubborn and naive, but can especially be often inelegant, being notable for having the tendency to fall out of Popo's lineup out of folly. As such, Nana is best characterized with partnership and accompaniment, and she must follow Popo throughout his entire whereabouts, even if it leads either of them into additional danger.

Reflecting her mountaineering career, Nana shows high entertainment and professionalism in scaling extensive and giant glacial mountaintops to reach the summits, more especially the Icicle Mountain, the world's largest mountain. Demonstrated in the Ice Climber franchise, Nana is heroic and valiant, proven when she and Popo begin their pursuit after the vegetables and their confrontation with their arch-nemesis, the condor, who is responsible for stealing Nana and Popo's vegetables. Like Popo, it is also implied that Nana is athletic, being notable for scaling mountains at superhuman speeds with the supplement of her incredible jumping prowess, allowing her to reach impressive heights just by jumping. Additionally, Nana excels in hammermanship, being able to knock out an onslaught of enemies by using her sole weapon for combat, her wooden mallet.

As mentioned before, Nana has pristine loyalty towards Popo. This is because Nana and Popo have a blood bond, which is a long-standing custom practiced around the world that involves a pair of distinct people swearing loyalty to one another.[2] Therefore, Nana and Popo must dwell in pristine teamwork for justice and to unleash their full potential. Additionally, a scene in the opening movie of Super Smash Bros. Melee depicts Popo and Nana high-fiving one another with a small heart emerging from emerging from where their hands meet, further reflecting their blood bond.[3] However, Nana displays high fragility, as she cannot stand up for herself due to her cowardice and requirement of Popo to do so as she serves as his sidekick for accompaniment, meaning that she is virtually misguided. Whenever Nana is separated from Popo, she will attempt to return back to Popo without much means of defending herself from incoming opponents that intend to attack her. Her dimwitted nature is another major factor of this, especially in the Super Smash Bros. series: she tends to be perplexed when it comes to returning back to Popo, especially on platforms. More than that, Nana is even unable to grab opponents nor even take action whenever Popo grabs or throws someone, instead just end up cheering for him, demonstrated in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Therefore, while Nana is a supportive and faithful sidekick, she is typically at her best when it comes to being together with Popo. Despite these flaws, Nana still shows high loyalty to Popo, and their pristine teamwork still compensates for such issues.

Nana demonstrates great heroism over her favourite hobbies, more especially mountaineering. However, her sole interest in mountaineering does not mean that Nana is not sentient of herself nor oblivious of other events occurring around her, as she is reactive of possessing cryokinesis and scaling the glacial peak to access the Battleship Halberd (battling against the Great Fox), respectively.

Additionally, when Nana and Popo meet up with Meta Knight in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, he flies ahead of them and the mountaineers follow him behind in a fit of rage, rendering Meta Knight's phenomenal speed as a challenge. This shows that Nana (and Popo) seeks entertainment in climbing mountains in such a manner that not only does she desire racing other skilled people to the top, but also demonstrating more of her confidence and valor as she scales several mountains while simultaneously foregoing the threat of antagonists who lurk and invade themselves in mountains Nana proceeds to scale, an example being the Subspace Army.

Like Popo, despite being a professional warrior herself, Nana ironically despises spectating and/or dealing with fights or arguments, as shown in the Subspace Emissary where Meta Knight and Lucario prepare to fight each other while Nana and Popo spectate in fear before becoming relieved after their reconciliation.

It is also shown that Nana is merciful and quite forgiving, as she and Popo do not show grudge against Meta Knight and Lucario for leaving them to fall towards the canyon after the Battleship Halberd crashed the Great Fox onto the Glacial Peak, and the latter two manage to board the Halberd without thinking twice about Nana and Popo.

Additionally, Nana is shown to be a messiah, as during the opening movie of Super Smash Bros. Melee, Popo is shown scaling the Icicle Mountain before landing on an unstable platform that dissolves before Nana arrives to save Popo from falling victim down to the bottom of the entire mountain in a nick of time, and Popo smiles with pure gratification for Nana's savior.[4]

Biography[]

Prior to the events of Ice Climber, Nana and Popo were once residents of a mysterious village in the North, and were living their traditional lives until an orange pterodactyl, the condor, ambushed the village and stolen all of their vegetables, urging Nana and Popo to train themselves to become professional mountaineers and begin their pursuit to the condor and their stolen vegetables, leading them to the Icicle Mountain, the world's largest mountain, which is where the condor has littered the village's vegetables around, prompting the two mountaineers to scale up to 32-48 glacial, narrow and enormous mountains filled with dangerous species, such as Polar Bears, Topis, Seals, Bees and Nitpickers, while also watching out for falling stalagmites of icicles and high chances of dangerous blizzards, to collect and retrieve their stolen vegetables and confront the condor by hoisting onto its talons, in order to prevent it from stealing or holding onto more vegetables it has since stolen.

As suggested by the series' title, Nana and Popo have gone out of their routine in scaling a countless series of glacial and extensive mountains throughout the entire lifespan of Ice Climber. During the illustrious timeline, the pioneer mountaineers have relentlessly pursued the aforementioned condor who, peculiarly, had possession of cucumbers, eggplants, and various other vegetables, while fending off Polar Bears, Nitpickers, and Topis along their routes while climbing the mountains the duo pass by.

After Nana and Popo have conquered all required mountains, the two mountaineers return home with their retrieved vegetables.

Ice Climber[]

In a cooperative two-player mode of Ice Climber, the second player controls Nana, a feminine mountaineer in a pink/maroon parka, as the simultaneous second-player character. Due to her deuteragonistic role, Nana cannot be controlled by the first player. Nana is motivated into jumping up through vertical, platform-heavy "glacial mountain" stages when all of the vegetables are stolen by a giant condor that retreats to the top of each stage, and along her route, she must smash overhead blocks of ice either by jumping into them from underneath or using her mallet to dissolve them down. In addition to forming random glacial stalactites that fall down from above (icicles), several varieties of antagonists native to the mountains threaten to reduce Nana's limited stock of lives: a flying bird, titled the Nitpicker, an upright-walking Polar Bear that wears pink shorts and sunglasses, and a Topi, which undergone an infamous alteration from a seal to a more fictional and rotund, yeti-like creature in the Western edition of Ice Climber, perhaps to avoid potential accusations of endorsing animal cruelty (in that the game depicts humans bludgeoning live seals for a point-reward). The upper half of all stages is an antagonist-free "bonus" stage in which Nana has the opportunity to navigate a tricky set of platforms, collect vegetables for points, and potentially jump up to and grab the condor's talons (or the Butterfly's feet in the second set of mountains in VS. Ice Climber) at the mountain's peak under a time-limit of 40 seconds, all for a massive point-bonus.

VS. Ice Climber[]

Nana makes her reappearance in the arcade expansion, VS. Ice Climber, which includes a pair of exclusive enemies that were omitted from the original NES release: the Bee, which wields a spear and flies across the screen, and the Butterfly, which replaces the Condor in the second and more challenging set of mountains after completing eight mountains in a row in the first and original set.

Other Media[]

Super Smash Bros.[]

Super Smash Bros. Melee[]

Nana and Popo made their debut appearance in the Super Smash Bros. series, after a total of sixteen years from the release of their original installment of their series, Ice Climber. As Popo is the default leader of the duo, while Nana serves as his fellow accompaniment, Nana and Popo are a dual-controlled pair of fighters, making them unique compared to the other fighters. They, as a singular entity, are one of the 14 default characters available from the start. As a duo-dynamic pair of fighters, the partner duplicates whatever the leader performs. If the following Ice Climber (Nana by default) is KO'd during the current stock, the remaining Ice Climber's fighting prowess (Popo by default) is only half as effective; vice versa, however, if the leading Ice Climber is KO'd before the partner, the partner will be rendered KO'd as well.

Like in Ice Climber, Nana is the CPU-controlled ally, who accompanies Popo, the default leading climber; however, their third and fourth alternate costumes will instead make Nana the leading climber, thus reversing the role. The difference between the duo is purely aesthetic.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]

Nana and Popo make their official reappearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, as playable characters and being available at the start of the game. In addition to retaining their moveset and attributes from Super Smash Bros. Melee, their own designs have been aesthetically altered, and the duo have received a final smash, titled Iceberg. Nana has the huge reputation of being the only playable female character in Brawl who wields a weapon.

The Subspace Emissary[]

Nana and Popo first appear in the Glacial Peak, climbing the glacial and enormous mountain leading to the Battleship Halberd and the Great Fox battling against each other in the sky. Upon noticing Meta Knight flying past them, Nana and Popo perceive this as a challenge, angering them and leading to the two racing him to the top of the mountain while fending off a sizeable portion of the Subspace Army along their route to the top. When Nana, alongside Popo and Meta Knight, reaches the top of the mountain, the trio find a meditating Lucario there (waiting for Meta Knight, Nana and Popo's arrival), who challenges Meta Knight to a battle, while Nana and Popo spectate in fear. After the fight, the victor revives the trophicated loser, and Meta Knight and Lucario reconciliate, relieving Nana and Popo, but more than that, Nana and Popo are especially delighted that Meta Knight and Lucario have befriended each other instead of continuing to be rivals. However, relief was short-lived, as the Battleship Halberd crashes the Great Fox into the mountain. Meta Knight and Lucario manage to board the Halberd, and Nana and Popo are knocked back to the ground towards the canyon from the earthquake inflicted by such impact (along with a multitude of Shadow Bugs raining from the sky), where Marth, Lucas, the Pokémon Trainer and Ike are located. After Nana and Popo defeat a portion of the Subspace Army (with the assistance of Mario, Kirby, Pit, Link and Yoshi), the two twins team up with the other fighters.

The Isle of Ancients has been engulfed by a plethora of activated Subspace Bombs, and the eleven fighters notice this (Nana among them). After annihilating the Subspace Gunship with the assistance of the Falcon Flyer (containing Samus Aran, Pikachu, Olimar, Captain Falcon, Diddy Kong, Donkey Kong, and R.O.B.) and the renowned Halberd (retaken by Meta Knight, Lucario, Solid Snake, Peach, Princess Zelda/Sheik, Fox McCloud, Falco Lombardi, and Mr. Game & Watch), Nana and the other fighters invade the Subspace.

Nana, along with Popo and the other fighters, eventually confronts Tabuu. Unfortunately, Tabuu trophicates the rest of the fighters once again using his off waves without enough warning, including Nana. However, she and Popo were miraculously revived by Kirby (who was revived by eating a Dedede Brooch), and accompanies Ness, Luigi, King Dedede and the rest of the fighters into the Great Maze. In the end, Nana, along with Popo and the other fighters, not only finally defeat Tabuu, but the latter's defeat also results in the Subspace successfully wiping out into nonexistence. Nana, along with Popo and the other fighters, then manages to escape from Subspace, and all the colonies composing the Great Maze (World of Trophies) are restored to their rightful positions in the real world, with the rifts of Subspace all being sealed off, excluding the Isle of Ancients. Because of the plethora of detonated Subspace Bombs engulfing said isle, it is impossible for the Isle of Ancients to return. As such, it is claimed to be permanently erased from existence. Instead, it leaves a giant luminous cross in its place, where the rest of the fighters look at in triumph and victory, including Nana, who peeks to the luminous cross while embracing behind Popo.

Super Smash Bros. for 3DS/Super Smash Bros. for Wii U[]

Nana and Popo do not make their reappearance as playable characters for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, although the two are regulated in both variations as a collectible trophy. According to Masahiro Sakurai, Nana and Popo were successfully functional and playable in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, but because of Nintendo 3DS's lack of hardware power, the two were ultimately scrapped from both variations of Super Smash Bros. 4, so that they share the same roster because Sakurai did not desire to have an exclusive character for the Wii U. Additionally, Nana and Popo were deemed as "low-priority" characters since it was unlikely that the duo would receive a new game in their series.

As a side note, as Nana has been cut from Smash 4, this also ranks the first time a playable female character has been cut from a Super Smash Bros. installment.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]

Alongside the rest of the entire veterans of the Super Smash Bros. series, Nana and Popo make their ultimate reappearance to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as unlockable characters, being formally announced within the game's E3 2018 trailer on June 12th, 2018.

Nana and Popo appear on the story mode, World of Light, where they, along with the other fighters (excluding Kirby), were vaporized by Galeem when he unleashed his beams of light and placed under his imprisonment. Gameplay-wise, Nana and Popo are found in the southern portion/bottom of the icy mountain next to the Temple of Light (where Pit and Simon are unlocked), located at the top left corner of The Light Realm. Unlocking them eliminates the icy paths in order for them to be successfully traversed in both directions, as well as unblocking an additional path to the shrouded forest, making Nana and Popo's unlock obligatory for completing the story. If the Ice Climbers are chosen to be playable for the overworld after being awakened from Galeem's imprisonment, only the leading Ice Climber (Popo by default) will appear, and the following Ice Climber (Nana by default) will be absent. As a side note, however, the second half of their costumes will instead make Nana as the controllable leading climber available to the player in the story.

Powers and abilities[]

  • Hammermanship: Nana is known for wielding her sole weapon, her wooden mallet. This allows her to excel at close to mid-ranged combat, and offers her exceptional attacking range despite her short stature.
  • Combat Skills: Using her hammer, Nana is capable of combating her opponents through multiple and countless strategies, by swift hammer sweeps, hammer swings, long-ranged hammer swipes, hammer flicks, and most categorically, swift and powerful hammer slams.
  • Raw Power: Nana excels in overall raw power, courtesy of her aforementioned combat skills above, but also due to her hammer sustaining high weight, offering him the opportunity to inflict high levels of damage output and knockback by smashing her hammer onto opponents, and knocking them out with only a few hits.
  • Agility: Nana has above-average agility (in more simple terms, running speed), which offers her the opportunity to outspeed her opponents or catch up with Popo if separated.
  • Jumping prowess: A sentiment originated from Ice Climber, Nana possesses excellent jumping prowess, allowing her to excel in reaching impressive heights. This is especially prevalent and versatile when it comes to climbing mountains.
  • Flexibility: In collaboration with Nana's small size and short stature, Nana benefits from their aforementioned agility and jumping prowess, but also from her high air acceleration, which allows her to easily mix up her movement in the air (despite her extremely slow air speed). In addition, Nana also benefits from hyperactive attacking speed, which allows Nana to constantly pressure the opponent and take on an aggressive playstyle.
  • Cryokinesis: The psychic ability to control and create ice and cold temperatures. This allows Nana to perform omnipotent tactics (such as summoning a giant iceberg or devastating snowstorm, blowing out gusts of blizzard from their palms), or simple and powerful techniques, including freeze tags, freeze touches or freeze sneezes.
    • Nana and Popo have an extremely powerful and magical gift from birth, that of generating and controlling ice, cold and snow at will. Using this power, Popo and Nana are capable of several versatile applications: the duo have demonstrated both immense power (by creating a gigantic ice palace) and subtle usage (by generating an icy path to walk on water or by creating several geometric shapes by combining her magic with her creative spirit). The duo also have demonstrated the ability to generate freezing rays from their hands or to create stalactites.

Weaknesses[]

  • Reliance on teamwork: Nana is otherwise over-reliant on Popo for teamwork, as if one climber gets lost and/or knocked out, the remaining climber will become drastically weakened.
  • Range: Despite wielding a hammer as a weapon to excel at close to mid-ranged combat, the range of Nana's hammer falls short to especially excel at long-ranged combat, allowing opponents with long-ranged combat skills or zoners to wall her out.
  • Floatiness: As mentioned before, Nana is burdened with a slow falling speed, which makes it difficult for her to land immediately and safely, while her poor air speed does not allow her floatiness to compliment her prowess in the air in the first place.
    • Floaty jumping: When combined with her light weight, her aforementioned floatiness also causes her jumps to be very "floaty," despite her excellent jumping prowess.
  • Separation: Nana and Popo are vulnerable to getting separated rather effortlessly, especially by attacks with high levels of strength. Upon separation, the opponent has the opportunity to assault either the more vulnerable leader (Popo) or the more helpless partner (Nana).
  • Aerial Drift: Despite her good agility and air acceleration, Nana is burdened with sluggish aerial and falling speeds, which heavily references said mechanics in Ice Climber, causing her to flounder against opponents who excel in aerial combat.
    • Lateral horizontal jumping: When combined with her aforementioned "floaty" jumping and slow falling speed, this also makes Nana's lateral horizontal jumps very underwhelming, as she will cover little horizontal distance within her jumps.

Trivia[]

  • Nana has the distinction of being the only playable female character in the entire Super Smash Bros. series to be a child.
  • Nana's orange costume in the Super Smash Bros. series is based on the condor, the main antagonist of the Ice Climber franchise.
  • Nana is implied to be the youngest female member of the entire Super Smash Bros. cast. Like the Pokémon Trainer, however, Nana and Popo's exact age is not specified, as Toon Link is the only child in Smash Bros. whose age is known (12 years old).
  • Nana is chronologically the first female character in the Super Smash Bros. series to:
    • Be represented with a weapon. Nana is also the only starter newcomer in Super Smash Bros. Melee to become a veteran in Brawl who wields a weapon.
    • Not be a swordfighter, instead rely on a different weapon (her mallet).
    • Be a starter character with a newly-represented franchise.
    • Be both a newcomer and starter character who depends on a weapon.
  • Nana is the only female character in the Super Smash Bros. series to:
    • Be reliant on a weapon that is not a sword.
    • Be both a newcomer and starter character to eventually become a veteran who wields a weapon.
    • Be scrapped in a Super Smash Bros. installment.
    • Appear in multiple Super Smash Bros. installments before being scrapped, then returning to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The reason Nana and Popo were scrapped from SSB4 is due to the consistent technical issues that Masahiro Sakurai and the development team faced when attempting to make them function properly in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS.
  • During Palutena's Guidance regarding the Ice Climbers, however, Pit assumes that their absence in SSB4 was due to illegal teaming, in which this dialogue is a humorous reference to the aforementioned reason above for Nana and Popo's absence in Smash 4.
    • Nana and Popo cease to return as playable characters in Super Smash Bros. 4, but then made a cameo as being relegated to a collectible trophy. In a column for the Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, Masahiro Sakurai claimed that technical limitations of the Nintendo 3DS prevented their inclusion; the two were reportedly difficult to implement on the system, and since the characters were unlikely to have a new game in their series, Sakurai deemed Nana and Popo as "low-priority" characters. While Nana and Popo were successfully functional on the Wii U, Sakurai decided to scrap them in order for the roster to be identical for both installments.
  • Popo makes cameos without Nana in WarioWare Inc.: Mega Microgame$, WarioWare: Twisted, and WarioWare: Touched. However, both Nana and Popo appear as cameos in WarioWare: Get It Together! when playing the "Ice Climber" microgame with two players.
  • Contrary to popular belief, Nana and Popo are not canonically siblings. In an interview with Masahiro Sakurai, he has referred to the pair as "childhood friends like boy-and-girl pair" and goes on to state that their relationship is “more than friends, but less than lovers,” along with revealing that their relationship is platonic.
    • Following this, Super Smash Bros. Brawl reaffirmed Sakurai's stance on the relationship both in-game and in supplemental material. The Ice Climbers' Smash Bros. DOJO!! page refers to them as friends in two instances while detailing their special moveset.[5] In particular, the description regarding Belay reads, "When you use Belay with two climbers, they perform a feat that leaves you dazzled at the depths of their friendship!"[6] Another circumstantial point is the final stanza of the description regarding Blizzard reads: "Ahem... And let’s overlook our friend’s occasional impulse to wander off, shall we?"[7]
      • Despite this, however, issue 152 of Nintendo Power seemingly lost his comment in translation and instead referred to Popo and Nana as siblings regardless.[8]
      • Additionally, Solid Snake's codec conversation regarding the Ice Climbers depicts Mei Ling mentioning that Nana and Popo have a "blood bond," which is a long-standing custom practiced around the world that involves a pair of distinct people swearing loyalty to one another.[9] This implies that Nana and Popo are supposed to be siblings due to possessing relentless dependability to each other and promising to never leave each other behind.
      • An extra hint of their relationship is that during the 2-player cooperative mode of Ice Climber, Nana and Popo are theorized to be "frenemies." When scaling mountains, Popo and Nana can either scale the mountain and collect vegetables with teamwork, or through means for one of them to reach the top of the mountain while leaving the other one behind to prevent them from catching up to their pace. This is further supplemented by the elements of the Bonus Stage and Super Bonus Stage, where either Nana and Popo must grab the condor's talons or reach the top of the mountain with the flag planted on the summit first, respectively.
  • Nana has never unequipped his hoodies or gloves, not even revealing her full hairstyle. As such, Nana is potentially referred to as an “eskimo.”
  • On the official North American box artwork of Ice Climber, Nana's parka is ironically colored red. This is due to inconsistent coloring.
    • In the NTSC description of the Ice Climbers' trophy in Super Smash Bros. 4, Nana is erroneously described as wearing red, even though she is typically seen wearing pink (as mentioned by the PAL version). This is potentially referring to her appearance on the official box artwork for Ice Climber on the NES.
    • Additionally, while Nana's fourth and final alternate costume depicts Nana's parka as red (which references her appearance on the North American boxart of Ice Climber) in Super Smash Bros. Melee, her in-game model depicts her outfit as maroon instead, which is reminiscent of her in-game sprite in Ice Climber.
  • On the official artwork of Ice Climber for Famicom, Nana is depicted as blonde. In-game of Ice Climber, however, Nana and Popo's hair coloration were restricted to black hair. In their later appearances in the Super Smash Bros. series onwards, the duo have brunette hairstyles. In the official banner of VS. Ice Climber, Nana and Popo are blonde once again.
