Lord Ned Umber is a character who only appears in the HBO TV series Game of Thrones, which is an adaption of the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series. Ned was the son of Smalljon Umber, the grandson of Greatjon Umber, and the last of his house, House Umber of Last Hearth. He was killed by White Walkers/Wights, marking the extinction of House Umber.
Ned was portrayed by Harry Grasby.
Biography[]
Ned Umber was born in 294 AC at Last Hearth as the only son of the Smalljon and the grandson of the Greatjon. He is seemingly named after Lord Eddard Stark, who is nicknamed 'Ned'. In 304 AC, at ten years old, Ned Umber became the new lord of House Umber and Last Hearth, after his father was slain in the Battle of the Bastards by Tormund Giantsbane.
Season 7[]
Ned is present in the main hall of Winterfell, during the council of northern and vale lords, which is held by Jon Snow, who is hailed as King in the North, with the last one to hold the title being Robb Stark. As Sansa Stark was angry at House Umber for siding with House Bolton, due to Smalljon Umber's actions, she suggested that the Umbers be stripped of their castle of Last Hearth and give it to an ally of Jon, but Jon dismisses her suggestion as Ned Umber was not to blame for his father's actions.
Ned was then called by Jon and he stands up from amongst the other lords with a look of fear. He and Alys Karstark were then motioned to come and stand before him, which the two fearfully obeyed, as they expected to be executed. However, instead, Jon asks them to once more swear fealty to House Stark, visibly relieved by this, Ned and Alys draw their swords and knelt before Jon Snow, declaring that they'll serve House Stark "now and always", retaining his hold on Last Hearth.
Ned Umber is later present when Jon announces to go to Dragonstone to seek an alliance with Daenerys Targaryen in order to hold off the army of the dead and defeat the Night King . Jon then leaves Sansa in control of the North.
Season 8[]
Ned Umber is present amongst the assembled lords when Jon Snow returns with Daenerys, her army, and her dragons. When they arrive at Winterfell, Ned looks on with curiosity and trepidation. In Winterfell's great hall as the assembled lords discuss the dead's breaching of the Wall at Eastwatch-by-the-sea. As House Umber's ancestral seat, the Last Hearth, is the closest to the breach, Sansa Stark orders Ned Umber to rally his banner men and return to Winterfell. Needing to speed up the process of bringing his people to Winterfell, he requested that he needs more horses and wagons before Ned awkwardly addresses Jon and Daenerys. After his request was granted, he departs Winterfell to return to Last Hearth.
Later, Ned was killed along with his people by the dead, rendering House Umber extinct. Following the sack, he was turned into a wight and pinned to a wall where the Night King leaves behind a message. When Jon Snow, Beric Dondarrion, and Edison Tollett discovered Ned Umber's corpse and the Night King's message, Ned, who has been reanimated as a wight, awoke upon hearing the three conversing with each other before startling them by letting out an inhuman scream.
When the undead Ned began lashing out with a knife, Beric immediately finishes him off with his flaming sword, immolating Ned in the process. The three then watched as Ned Umber began screaming in pain before finally dying. As his corpse burned, the Night King's spiral message was also ignited.
