The New Appalachia Settlers or simply The Settlers are a major protagonist group in Fallout 76 in the Wastelanders storyline. They are a group of Honest working folk from various areas such as The Pitt, that have come to Appalachia for a new honest working life.
Story[]
Upon learning of rumors of treasure in Appalachia and of the Vault 76 Residents rebuilding the Wasteland there, the Settlers travel to Appalachia, turning the former Brotherhood of Steel outpost at Spruce Knob into their new home base, Foundation. When the Vault 76 residents meet them, they are first sent there by the Vault 76 Overseer to warn the Settlers of the threat of the Scorched Plague and Scorchbeasts. Paige is willing to accept the threat seriously, but wants the confirmation from his doctor, Aubrie, first before he'll agree to have the Settlers inoculated with the vaccine The Responders were working on in Charleston. Once the residents get Aubrie's confirmation, Paige agrees to have them inoculated.
Later, Paige is told of the "treasure" being the U.S. gold reserve from Fort Knox housed in Vault 79. Despite his skepticism due to things with Congress and Capitol Hill before the Great War, he'll agree to help put together a team to break into the Vault to reach the gold. After getting the team together, the residents make a difficult decision as to if they will hit Vault 79 with the Settlers, or do it with Meg Groberg and the New Appalachian Raiders instead. If they choose the Settlers, Jen, Sergeant Radcliff, and Penelope Hornwright will join the residents to hit Vault 79, using the Hornwright Industries patented automated mining device, the Motherlode, to dig into Vault 79, thus bypassing the vault door. Though the Motherlode ends up destroying itself breaching the vault by overloading its systems, they get inside. Jen disabled the laser walls preventing further access, and Radcliff reprograms the automated defense turrets to help clear out any resistance inside, such as feral ghouls. Once reaching the main part of the vault, they find surviving members of the U.S. Secret Service sworn to defend the gold locked inside a sealed room, unable to get out due to a reactor leak triggering a lockdown. Once the residents and their allies from Foundation vent the reactor chamber and lift the lockdown, the agents take them to the main storage area where the gold bullion is held. Per their agreement with helping the agents out, the Secret Service hand over 1000 bullion as thanks. The Vault 76 residents can then either keep all 1000 for themselves, uphold their agreement with Foundation and split it 50/50 with Paige, with each getting 500 bullion, or split it three ways to include the Raiders with giving Foundation and The Crater 250 each while the residents get the other 500. After that, Paige returns to Foundation to start using the bullion to help the Settlers ensure Appalachia, and maybe even the USA, can begin the road to recovery from the nuclear holocaust of the Great War.
After that, the Vault 76 residents can stop by on a daily basis to help out Ward with a daily quest to continue boosting their reputation with the Settlers to gain access to new merchandise from their vendors.
