Biography[]

Several years prior to the story, Nick Charles was a private detective in New York. He had solved numerous cases (murders, missing people, etc.) for various clients. He had also done a case for wealthy businessman/inventor Clyde Wynant, to the point where his daughter Dorothy would recognized Nick.

As some point, Nick would come across Nora, and eventually retire from detective work, in order for the two of them to get married, and for Nick to inherit some of Nora's fortune. The two of them would move New York from California, and settle down for a new life.

Four years later, Dorothy Wynant informed her father --who was recently divorced from his wife Mimi-- that she planned to get married, and he goes on a mysterious business trip, promising to return in time for Dorothy's wedding.

However, after three months pass, the wedding day approaches, and her father fails to return, Dorothy worries. The Charleses had returned to New York for the winter Christmas holidays to celebrate their newly-wedded bliss with drinking. Dorothy recognizes Nick and informs him about her father's disappearance. Nick suggested that she call her father's lawyer to find out if he had heard from him. Nora arrived, and Dorothy and Tommy were introduced to her. Nick and Nora had been drinking a lot of martinis, and they'd both have serious hangovers in their hotel.

Then, Wynant's lawyer MacCaulay entered, and explained how he hadn't heard from or seen Dorothy's father for three months, only to get a call form his secretary claiming Dorothy's father was back and waiting for him. Nick called Dorothy to tell her that her father was back, but Dorothy's mother Mimi overhears the conversation, and is frantic that her ex-husband is unavailable to give her and her new husband, Chris Jorgenson, more money. When Mimi goes to see Julia Wolf, Wynant's mistress, to ask for money, she finds her dead body clutching Wynant's watch chain.
