Ancestors, give me strength!
~ Nightwolf

Nightwolf (real name Grey Cloud) is a Native American shaman and a major character in Mortal Kombat 9 and Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath while his revenant self serves as a minor antagonist of Mortal Kombat X and 11.

He was voiced by Larry Omaha in Mortal Kombat 9, and Daniel Lujan in Mortal Kombat 11, who also voiced his revenant self in the same game.

History[]

Past[]

Before becoming Nightwolf, he was once known as Grey Cloud from the tribe of Matoka. As Grey Cloud, he was born and grew up in poverty alongside his people, who were treated unfairly, which greatly upset him, adding to his frustrations over his beliefs, the tribe's ancestors had given up their descendants future to colonizers.

One day, Grey Cloud was approached by the Black Dragon leader, Kano, who offered to make Grey Cloud rich, in return for bringing him the Matoka's most sacred relics. Consumed by his anger, Grey Cloud agreed and attempted to steal the relic, but soon realized that he would be surrendering the last of his people's dignity.

Grey Cloud then turned against Kano and chose to defend the Matoka for the first time, but he was brutally beaten and left for dead. As he lay dying, the Great Spirit of his people came to him and empowered Grey Cloud, giving him the mantle of Nightwolf, the legendary defender of Matoka. As Nightwolf, he managed to fight back against Kano and successfully drove the Black Dragon away from Matoka.

Now attune to the spirits of Earthrealm, Nightwolf served to protect his people and his homeland, which drew the attentions of Earthrealm's protector god, Raiden, who made Nightwolf one of his champions to defend their realm against Outworld in Mortal Kombat.

Mortal Kombat (2011)[]

In Raiden's visions, Nightwolf was seen dead laying on the ground as his arrow is stuck on Sheeva's dying corpse. Nightwolf challenged Scorpion in a tournament as he tries to convince Scorpion to forget about revenge, only for him to be defeated. He is then seen celebrating Liu Kang's victory against Shang Tsung.

During Outworld's invasion of Earthrealm, Nightwolf recruited Stryker, after he defeated Ermac, to join Raiden against Shao Kahn's army. After the cyberized Sub-Zero had his free will restored, Nightwolf and Sub-Zero were sent to prevent a Soulnado stealing Earthrealm's souls. Nightwolf would combat Quan Chi, and defeat Noob Saibot, throwing the spectre into the Soulnado, which destroyed it.

As Raiden and Liu Kang left to consult with the Elder Gods, Raiden left Nightwolf in charge of the group. The Cyber Lin Kuei army appeared and attacked. Nightwolf defeated both Cyrax and Sektor while the rest finished off the other Cyber ninjas. Sindel appears and kills thr majority of the group (leaving Nightwolf, Johnny Cage, and Sonya Blade left). Nightwolf regains conscious and apparently defeated Sindel, only for her to awaken and attack him. As Sindel was about to finish Nightwolf off, he casts a spell and sacrificed himself to kill Sindel. Nightwolf was then brought back as a revenant and was defeated (along with Kitana and Kung Lao) by Raiden.

Mortal Kombat X[]

Nightwolf appears as a revenant along with Jax Briggs and Smoke. He was seen clashing against Kenshi Takahashi and retreated (or defeated). He was later seen riding with Quan Chi and other revenants.

Decades later, Nightwolf and his fellow Revenants rode on horseback to Quan Chi's fortress to free Shinnok, but found themselves battling Earthrealm forces. Nightwolf attempts to fight the soldiers by throwing tomahawks at them as a wounded Quan Chi is led to his fortress by Liu Kang, but ultimately retreats when Earthrealm gets the upperhand.

Mortal Kombat 11 (Aftermath)[]

A younger Nightwolf from before his death rejected the Titan Kronika's offer, and was imprisoned within the Void along with Fujin and Shang Tsung. As Fire God Liu Kang attempted to use the Hourglass, Nightwolf, Shang Tsung, and Fujin intervened, having been freed after he defeated her. They warn the Fire God that using the Hourglass without Kronika's Crown would eventually shatter the Hourglass and doom all realms. The three explained how Kronika banished them into void for refusing to aid her. With Liu Kang convinced, he sent the three to the past.

The three were sent to the Koliseum, just as Kitana clashed against Shao Kahn. They escaped to the Beast Pen, only to be detected by Kollector. Nightwolf defeated Kollector and the two kills the beasts. As Nightwolf acknowledged how much time they took, he suggested that they go straight to Shang Tsung's Island and acquire the Crown. Unfortunately, they were spotted. Shang Tsung suggested that they bring Sindel back to life. Although Nightwolf disagreed with the choice, they went to Earthrealm to obtain it's Jinsei to heal her body up.

As Fujin guarded the Wu Shi Grotto, Nightwolf and Shang Tsung were confronted by Frost and Geras, who attacked the two. Nightwolf defeated Frost while Shang Tsung was still clashing with Geras. Nightwolf and Fujin both assist Shang Tsung, only for Geras to defeat the two, leaving Nightwolf to be his opponent. Nightwolf defeated Geras and he severed his arms to buy time to have Shang Tsung and Fujin send him elsewhere, Chaosrealm.

While the Revenant Nightwolf does not appear in the main game, he appears as an antagonist in the DLC. In the Aftermath timeline, the younger Nightwolf, Fujin and Shang Tsung were captured in Shinnok's Bone Temple, and the Revenant Nightwolf guarded them. After they broke out, Revenant Nightwolf fought Fujin, Shang Tsung while Sindel battled his human counterpart. Nightwolf managed to grievously wound Tsung with his lightning, tortuously electrocuting him before his human self broke the spell. Vowing to kill his younger self in spite of his own potential death, he refused to listen to his younger self's plea that Kronika was not worth following, and rejected his faith in the Great Spirit, considering her a fraud. Battling his younger self, he was defeated, but began having his soul stolen by the injured Tsung. Despite the younger Nightwolf's plea that the Revenant could be restored, he and Fujin had to let Shang Tsung heal himself, and the Revenant Nightwolf died.

The four were spotted at the Dead Pool by Erron Black and Baraka. As the fight clashed, Erron attempted to shoot Nightwolf, only for his bullet to be sliced as Nightwolf threw his tomahawk at him. After Sheeva defeated Baraka, Erron starts firing everywhere, leaving Nightwolf to hide behind the coffin until Sheeva defeated him. As they headed to the Soul Chamber, Nightwolf witnessed Sheeva defeating Kitana and Sindel was fully revived. Sindel agreed to aid the three at Shang Tsung's Island. Nightwolf decided to watch for Cetrion outside with Sindel while Shang Tsung and Fujin searched for the Crown. While the two fought Cetrion, she grabbed onto Nightwolf. As he was about to sacrifice him self to kill her, Sindel intervened and the two defeated Cetrion. Nightwolf decided to go with Jax and Jacqui while Fujin and Shang Tsung headed to the Shirai Ryu Fire Garden.

Nightwolf was seen on the ship with the Briggs family. As Shang Tsung gain possession of the Crown, Nightwolf fought him and was defeated. Shang Tsung attempted to steal his soul, only for Fujin and Raiden to intervene. After Raiden and Fujin were both defeated, Nightwolf's fate was left unknown along with the others.

Appearance[]

In his appearance in Mortal Kombat 11, three versions of Nightwolf are playable depending on the selected Kosmetic Outfit.

His default skin is that of an older Nightwolf, appearing unchanged from his death in Mortal Kombat (2011). His past self is also playable and selectable, appearing far younger than his default skin with outfits closely resembling his appearance in MK3 and MK 2011. A final skin, a Revenant skin, is also selectable where he resembles his undead appearance from Mortal Kombat X.

Personality[]

Nightwolf is portrayed as stoic and deeply in tune with nature, animals, and spirits. His primary weapon is a tomahawk, which he is able to enhance with green spiritual energy. He can also use this same energy to summon an artificial bow and arrow, as well as deflect projectiles with his bare chest.

Originally, his tribe was Lakota-Sioux, hence why he refers to Raiden as 'Haokah', but this was later changed in Mortal Kombat 11. He is now a member of a fictional tribe called the Matoka.

~ Nightwolf after defeating Kollector
Kronika is not the answer.
~ Nightwolf after defeating his revenant self
The Great Spirit will choose another. I may die, but the mantle will live on.
~ Nightwolf before fighting Shang Tsung
Before I was Nightwolf, I was a fool named Grey Cloud. Born into poverty, I resented my ancestors for giving up our future to colonizers... Kano offered a way out, promising riches if I stole the tribe's most sacred relics. I was sorely tempted, but then I realized that by saving myself, I'd be surrendering the last of my people's dignity. For the first time, I defended the Matoka's pride. Kano was unimpressed. But as I lay dying, the Great Spirit came to me. By rejecting Kano, I had proven worthy of an ancient honor. The mantle of Nightwolf... legendary defender of the Matoka. Now, as I inherit Kronika's mantle, the way before me is split. The Keeper of Time cannot also be my tribe's defender. Which path do I choose? Even here, at time's beginning, the Great Spirit's wisdom guides me. She calls me to restore history. The Matoka, I must leave to another. To the next Nightwolf. Like all our sacred relics, the Nightwolf mantle belongs to the tribe. Any Matokan, can prove worthy of its power. I enjoy imagining who will defend us next.
~ Nightwolf's MK11 ending.

Trivia[]

  • Along with Sonya, Quan Chi and Kabal, Nightwolf never appears in Mortal Kombat (2011)'s Story Mode in his alternate costume.
  • Nightwolf, Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Smoke and Jade in MK 2011 are the only characters that refer to Raiden as "Master" or "Lord". The other warriors call him simply by his actual name.
  • Nightwolf is one of the two only male characters that still have a hairline after being transformed by a Babality. The other being Liu Kang.
  • Nightwolf has one of the five chapters in which the character does not fight a good character in MK 2011s Story Mode; the others being Sub-Zero (Human and Cyber form), Kung Lao and Stryker.
  • In MK 2011, Nightwolf is one of the only six characters to enter the arena via Special Move, using his Shoulder Charge. The others being Johnny Cage, via Shadow Kick, Kabal, via Nomad Dash and Kung Lao, Raiden and Cyrax, via their Teleports.
    • There are other characters that use Special Moves in their intro, however, not as a mean of locomotion (e.g., Jax uses his Ground Pound).
    • Sektor, Smoke, Skarlet, Sub-Zero and Scorpion also teleport and Sindel use her levitate as a mean of locomotion to enter the Battle Arena, however, they don't use the move itself, they only use variations.
  • Nightwolf's Kombat victory pose is one of the only three in which the character will leave the arena. The others being Scorpion's and Cyrax's.
  • Nightwolf is one of the seven characters who does not fight against a tag in their chapter in Story Mode. The others being Johnny Cage, Cyrax, Jax, Sub-Zero, Jade and Stryker.
  • Nightwolf, along with Cyber Sub-Zero, are the only characters that are possessed by Shao Kahn in their Arcade endings.
  • An interaction with Sub-Zero states that Nightwolf's present, Revenant-self was killed by Raiden. This was later proven false with the Aftermath Story Mode expansion.
  • Interactions with some characters reveal many encounters with other Nightwolfs, including one that appeared on Shang Tsung's Island and was defeated by the sorcerer, an encounter with D'Vorah where she came out the victor, and an encounter with Kotal Kahn.
    • Meanwhile in the main canon, a pre-fight conversation between Geras and Nightwolf (in the story mode of the Aftermath expansion) states that the former has fought other Nightwolves before him and compliments his skill among them.
  • Unlike other characters whose present Revenant-self are default appearances, including Sindel's, Nightwolf's default appearance is similar to his appearance in Mortal Kombat 2011, however through the Kustomization, it is possible to change his appearance to that of his Revenant appearance.
    • Both his younger-self and Revenant later appear in the Aftermath Story Mode expansion.
  • Interactions with some characters reveal that Nightwolf allowed himself to be beaten by Scorpion during the first Tournament in hopes of pushing Scorpion onward to his path of redemption. Nightwolf believed if he had beaten Scorpion during their encounter, Scorpion may not have been freed from Quan Chi's control.
  • Nightwolf and Scorpion are the only known two characters to have their present-selves being killed by respective villains, namely Shang Tsung and D'Vorah, after respective mirror matches between their present and past selves.
  • An interaction with Rambo reveals that the latter is one of the Matoka on his father's side of the family.
