Father, I will find them, I will bring them Home.
~ Noa's promise to avenge his father and find and rescue his people.
You come to judge me? I judge myself. I promised our father I would bring them home...I failed. Eagle Clan belongs to Proximus "Caesar" now. That is the law...but the law is WRONG.
~ Noa contemplating to his father's eagle, and accepts that Proximus' law is wrong, fueling his courage, and winning the eagle's trust.
Proximus was right. Humans will never give up. Not until you claim all things for yourselves. [...] What is for apes? To go back to silence? We will rebuild our home. Better. Stronger. From what we have learned.
~ Noa confronts Mae before she leaves, their friendship now strained/fractured.

Noa is the main protagonist of the 2024 sci-fi action film Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, the fourth installment of the Planet of the Apes reboot franchise. An ape born generations after Caesar's time, he is a member and later leader of the Eagle Clan, an isolated ape clan known for their bond with eagles.

Having watched his village be destroyed and his father murdered, Noa vowed to avenge his father and rescue his clan, journeying into the forbidden zone in search for them. Alongside with him, he is accompanied by a human girl named Mae, determining the future of apes and humans alike.

He is portrayed by Owen Teague in motion-capture and his first heroic role.

Appearance[]

Noa appears like an average young chimpanzee, though his facial structure is similar to the previous protagonist, Caesar.

After being burned by an overcharged cattle prod by Sylva, he has a scar on his chest similar to the birthmark that Caesar inherited from his father.

Personality[]

Noa is humble, though perhaps to the point of self-deprecation, as putting himself behind his friends was both generosity and lack of self-worth. Part of his self-esteem issues stem from being son of the Master of Eagles, which is highly valued position in the Eagle Clan, whereas he originally lacks his father's falconry expertise, and Noa's own skill of technical prowess isn't as clearly advantageous due to their primitive technology. Noa is also quite shy as he holds feelings for his friend, Soona, but is reluctant to share them until dramatic circumstances grant him perspective.

In spite of his self-esteem problems, Noa is incredibly courageous, quick and fearless to confront dangers, if it will help protect or save his friends and clan. Even submitted to Proximus Caesar, Noa remained strong - somewhat unnerved and disturbed, but brave in the face of a greater power. While inelegant in his first fight, in subsequent encounters, Noa was adept and adaptable, being able to overcome complications with quick and clear thinking. He was able to defeat stronger opponents through strategy, such as leading Sylva to trap himself within pipes or using the Clan's eagles to force Proximus off the cliff. Similarly, his adaptability fuels his leadership skills, as he was able to direct his clan through and up a military bunker to avoid the chaos of an ocean flood.

Noa is distrustful of "echoes," the clan name for humans, blindly believing the Elders' warnings about them being unpredictable and hazardous. He initially tries to scare off Mae, though from the wisdom of Raka, is willing to entertain her company. His distrust was reinforced when Mae revealed she could speak, as Noa believes the simple withholding of information constitutes lying. Even so, upon a greater threat in Proximus Caesar and his Kingdom, Noa is rational enough to ally with Mae. While Mae does save Soona, she ultimately betrays the Ape allies, unleashing a flood that could have killed them all if not for Noa's escape plan. Afterwards, Noa finds his distrust of humans stronger than ever, but still can't bring himself to hate them exactly; he finds that he agrees with Proximus' negative perception of humanity, but can't convince himself that conflict is the answer, as meeting Mae again, he is tense, but not hateful like the late Ape King.

Biography[]

Noa was born to Koro and Dar in the Eagle Clan sometime after Caesar's death. He grew up watching his father's eagle calls and had a crush on his childhood friend, Soona. One day, Noa, Soona, and Anaya steal Falcon eggs from a nest to raise as part of an ape ceremony. On his way home, he encounters a human girl who was apparently meek from the virus. At night in the village, he repaired a broken fish stand, afterwards hearing a noise in the store house. When he inspects, the human girl panics and crashes into him while escaping, accidentally breaking his egg; thus, he sets off to retrieve a replacement egg. Arriving in the overgrown city, he sees multiple dead Apes from his clan; when he moves to check one, the wounded Ape uses his last breath to warn Noa to run away. Noa then hides in the bushes when a clan of evil apes led by Sylva, the right-hand gorilla of Proximus Caesar. Sylva sees Noa's horse and startles it to lead them to the Eagle Clan. Noa sneaks back into the Eagle Clan to warn them, but Sylva had already invaded the clan and captured most of Noa's clan members, including his mother and Soona. Noa witnesses his father being murdered by Sylva, and falls off a tree knocking him unconscious.

By the time he wakes up, Noa finds his father's body and sees his clan has been destroyed. Seeking to avenge his father's death, Noa falls down a hole where he is threatened by a rebellion orangutan named Raka, who mistakenly believed Noa to be one of Proximus' guards. Once Noa clarifies that he is not with Proximus, Raka frees him and allows him to share his shelter; Raka explains that he is the sole survivor of a group of scholars known as the Order of Caesar, and as such begins preliminary education about some details of the past. They explore an overgrown airport, where Noa sees a painting that he labels as "echoes," but Raka corrects that they were called humans, which makes Noa realise that his village Elders were not as truthful as he thought.

At their camp during the night, Raka notices the human girl that Noa realises had been following him, so tries to scare her off, but Raka dissuades him, explaining that the true Caesar spoke of compassion towards man and ape alike. Raka names her "Nova" because he believes all human women have the name. Raka insists that Noa gives Nova his father's shroud to keep her warm, which he reluctantly does despite hesitating. As to keep the three together, Raka decides to join Noa on his journey, while also ferrying Nova; the three encounter zebras at the river the next day. A small herd of humans also arrives at the river to drink, which Raka thinks will be an opportune chance to reintegrate Nova into a new herd for her own well-being. Noa needs to depart, so Raka gives his pendant of the Order of Caesar (which uses the symbol the original ape Caesar took from his childhood window), encouraging him to remember the real messages of Caesar, which were unity, compassion, and assistance.

As Noa is about to ride away, Proximus' Apes, lead by Sylva, attack, scaring away the zebras. Nova hides from Sylva in the grass and sees Noa on his horse trying to find her. To Noa's surprise, Nova reveals she can speak and calls out to Noa, but in doing so alerts Sylva of her presence as well. Sylva attacks Nova, but Noa pulls her on his horse in time and kicks Sylva away as they escape.

They reunite with Raka, who is amazed that a human can talk, but Noa is just angry about the deception. Nova apologizes for her silence before, explaining that she needed to hide her intellect from anyone who would either perceive her as a threat or take advantage of her for her intelligence. She then corrects them that her real name is "Mae" and that she too had her village slaughtered by Proximus.

Noa, Raka and Mae are attacked by Sylva and the other apes over the bridge, during which Mae falls into the river and hangs onto the net to avoid drowning. Raka climbs down and pulls Mae to safety, and before Sylva cuts the net, Raka reminds Noa that apes are "stronger together," then the net is severed, thus Raka is dragged away by the current, sending him falling down the waterfall to his apparent death.

Noa and Mae are taken to the Kingdom of Apes where Noa reunites with his clan members. They watch as Proximus makes an apparently daily speech, in which he claims he is the holder of Caesar's legacy, thus he is the true ruler of Ape kind. He has numerous enslaved Apes to break into a vault which would apparently gives apes power over humans, although the chains break without moving the vault door at all. Proximus "invites" Noa to his throne room, where the king reveals his knowledge about humanity's past scientific and technological achievements; expressing admiration for humans, but also condemning them for being untrustworthy. Proximus praises Noa for being clever enough to repair one of their overcharged cattle prods. Mae is brought into the throne room, where she and Noa are both interrogated by Proximus, but neither reveal anything, since Noa doesn't know about any human technology and Mae withholds information, only revealing she has contempt for Apes trying to take human inventions.

That night, Mae recruits Noa, Anaya and Soona to help her set explosives to destroy the dam Proximus had built, in order to prevent his rise of power. They are caught by Trevathan, a human who was enslaved by Proximus. Mae tries to convince Trevathan to join them in stopping Proximus, but he refuses and threatens to tell Proximus about their plan, only to be killed by Mae strangling him to death. Noa and his friends are horrified by this, but they dump Trevathan's body in the river anyway to cover up the plan. They manage to break into the vault; the Apes learn about the solar system and their world's past in a classroom for children, though are disturbed by the imagery of zoos in a picture book, whereas Mae finds a satellite decipher key and a gun with some ammunition.

By the time they try to escape, it has become morning and they are surrounded by Proximus and his men. Proximus threatens to kill Soona if he isn't given knowledge that allows his control of the technology and weaponry in the vault, but Mae shoots and kills the ape holding Soona hostage with a gun she acquired from the vault. Proximus allows Mae to leave but demands more guns from the vault in return. Refusing to give the apes more power, Mae sets off the explosives, flooding the Kingdom and leaving all the apes to drown. Noa instructs his clan members to climb aboard the constructions, ironically using the same skills Proximus had taught them and manages to save them all. Noa falls behind as he is pursued by Sylva; unable to overpower the gorilla, Noa instead navigates through a narrow gap between pipes, which Sylva lodges himself in, leaving him to drown, thus Noa avenges both his father and Raka.

Proximus ambushes Noa as the young Ape exits the vault, and eventually starts beating him repeatedly in front of the horrified apes outside, showing his true colors; Proximus angrily blames Noa for destroying his Kingdom. After he arrogantly demands that Noa faces him as he dies, Noa has finally mastered his father's eagle calls and even rallies the other apes in calling for the eagles to attack Proximus, sending him falling to his death.

With Proximus finally dead and Caesar's legacy restored, Noa becomes ruler of the Eagle Clan and has the apes rebuild their home to make it better. Mae arrives to say goodbye, still believing that humanity will regain their dominance over the Apes. Still upset at her for betraying him, Noa nonetheless gives Mae the necklace as a reminder of Raka, while questioning whether or not humans and apes can live together.

Mae hands the key to a woman in a hazmat suit at the entrance of a satellite relay base, which Mae seems banned from entry; the woman, decontaminates, then inserts the key into the core relay, completing the circuit, thereby allowing them to communicate with other surviving humans, while Noa takes Soona to the telescope he had found with Mae, and while Soona looks through it, Noa stares at the stars with a smile of relief.
