Hero Overview

Why do I always make such poor choices?
~ Nobita's catchphrase.
Thinking you're no good and worthless is the worst thing you can do.
~ Nobita Nobi

Nobita Nobi is the main protagonist of the Doraemon franchise. He is a 10-year-old fourth grader in Tokyo's Nerima Ward who was born on August 7, and an only child. Due to his bad records about almost everything, his great-great-grandson from the future, Sewashi Nobi, sends him the robot Doraemon to help him to get a better life.

Portrayals[]

  • In the 1973 anime, he was voiced by the late Yoshiko Ōta.
  • In the 1979 anime, he was voiced by Noriko Ohara and Hiroko Maruyama in the Japanese version, Steven Bednarski in the Canadian English dubbed version, and Denise Tan in the Singaporean English dubbed version.
  • In the 2005 anime, he was voiced by Megumi Ōhara in the Japanese version, Johnny Yong Bosch in the English dubbed version, and Muriel Hoffman in the UK dubbed version.

Appearance[]

Nobita is a kid with black hair who wears round glasses, a yellow or red polo shirt with white collar, and dark blue shorts. He also wears white socks that cover his feet, and blue shoes.

Personality[]

Nobita's character flaws are nearly endless: he is lazy, uncoordinated, dim-witted, frail, plain-looking, unlucky and bad at sports, not to mention liking to sleep all day. His typical day consists of arriving late on classes, scoring zeros in his tests (although he can score well if he works hard), getting lectured by his teacher, being bullied by his classmates Gian and Suneo, falling into curbside rain gutters, being chased by dogs, and getting scolded by his mother for his sloth and poor academic results. Nobita has a crush on Shizuka and always tries to impress her, including by Doraemon's gadgets. Whether or not he succeeds depends on the episode. He is jealous whenever he sees her hanging out with another boy, especially Dekisugi. In fact, Nobita cares for Shizuka so much that he would do anything for her, even willingly distancing himself from her if he sees himself as a bad influence for her life, best demonstrated in the episode "Goodbye, Shizuka". And despite knowing from Doraemon that he will eventually marry her in the future no matter what, he still feels unsure about their relationship many times.

For all his flaws, Nobita possesses some unique talents such as his unrivaled marksmanship, ability to weave intricate string figures, and creativity. Although Nobita is usually portrayed as being cowardly, he has often risked his life to help save others or even entire civilizations (best shown in long stories), and can be very serious and responsible at times despite normally being lazy and unmotivated. Also he has shown many creativity in arts and crafts like he can make anything using paper (like cars, buses, tanks, space shuttle, etc), and also can write a manga review or write his own manga. His creativity is the proof of his high intelligence. Nobita also has a talent for finding unusual applications for Doraemon's gadgets, and to abuse them, which usually gets him into trouble. In those times, Nobita plans to use the gadgets to get back at his bullies, or even for criminal activities to become richer or gain more power, even backstabbing Doraemon at times. Although he often suffers karma from those times and there are occasions that he realizes his mistakes, Nobita always repeats them all over again, much to Doraemon's worry. Regardless, Nobita sees Doraemon as irreplaceable, as shown whenever Sewashi proposes Doraemon's younger sister, Dorami, to take his place as Nobita's caretaker.

Despite everything, Doraemon succeeds in his mission, as seen in several episodes where they travel to the future and the short film Nobita's Night before a Wedding. Nobita eventually marries Shizuka and has a son who, in a generational role reversal, bullies Gian's son.

Trivia[]

  • "Nobita" means "strong" or "big bear" in Japanese, which is ironic as Nobita is not physically strong.
