Wouldn't be a Noble mission if it were easy
~ Carter-A259 about their missions

Noble Team is a fireteam from the Halo franchise, focused on in the 2010 video game Halo: Reach. Led by Carter-A259, known simply as Carter, Noble Team undergoes missions to defeat the Covenant, the main antagonistic collective of aliens in the process of destroying the planet Reach. Noble Six, the main character of Halo: Reach, is part of this group. The story of the game follows the story of Noble Team.

Overview[]

Noble Team was the fireteam tasked with protecting the planet Reach, branched off of the UNSC. It was formed as a group of SPARTAN-IIIs, the third generation of trained SPARTANS. It consisted of:

  • Carter: Noble One
  • Kat: Noble Two
  • Jun: Noble Three
  • Emile: Noble Four
  • Jorge: Noble Five
  • Noble Six, the main character

Carter was the leader of the group. Kat was a seasoned cryptanalyst. Jun was the best marksman of the group, and for that reason he carried a sniper rifle with him at all times. Emile was a master at close ranged combat, and carried a large kukri knife and a shotgun.

Jorge was the only member of the group that was a SPARTAN-II. He was a veteran Spartan that despite his long years of service that would wear down the average Spartan, he was still an honorable supersoldier who showed no signs of slowing down.

Noble Six was the new recruit that replaced Thom-A293, who died prior to the beginning of the game. This new recruit wasn't a rookie however. He was actually one of the only Spartans to receive a Hyper-Lethal ranking, a title only Spartan John-117 shared.

All the members of Noble Team are now deceased, with the exception of Jun. Saving Reach turned out to be a failure, but they at least delivered Cortana to Master Chief, which would be important in the future of humanity.

As Halo: Reach showed, Noble Team's actions took place during the Fall of Reach in mid-2552 as the Human-Covenant War was in full swing at that point, 27 years after the destruction of Harvest that first alerted Humanity of the Covenant and the threat they posed. With most of the United Earth Government and United Nations Space Command Inner Colonies having already fallen, and all the Outer Colonies already destroyed, Reach was the primary target for the Covenant Empire as taking it would cost the UNSC one of their most important military and civilian hub worlds, and leave the Earth as the sole hub world left, and if the Covenant find Earth, Humanity is doomed.

On July 24th, SPARTAN-B312, a Lieutenant, arrives to join up with Carter and the rest of Noble Team as their new Noble Six. Colonel Holland had just briefed Carter on word of the Visegrád Communication Relay Hub having gone offline, and UNSC troopers sent to restart it having gone missing. Due to Reach's importance, Holland wants Visegrád back online post-haste, suspecting the local Insurrectionists as the culprits due to a previous similar incident that allowed the rebels to steal two ships from drydock on the colony Harmony. Once Holland signs off until receiving word that Visegrád is back online, Noble Team depart for the relay.

As they arrive some distance from the relay, they pick up a distress beacon. They find the beacon, but no sign of the missing UNSC troopers. More suspicious, there doesn't appear to be any sign of explosive residue indicating that the rebels were responsible...

Kat: Why are we not seeing explosives residue?
Carter: Noble Three, can you confirm any EX residue in the area?
Jun: Hmm... Negative, sir.
Emile: Plasma, maybe.
Jorge: Can't be. Not on Reach.
Emile: There's a lotta blood on the ground.
~ Something doesn't feel right about this

Deciding to investigate further, they soon find several surviving civilians barricaded in one house. As the farmer representing them only speaks in Hungarian, Jorge translates what he tells them, mentioning that some-thing killed the farmer's son early that morning, while some of his neighbors were attacked during the night, with screams and gunfire being heard until around sunrise. Jun soon detects life forms and heat signatures nearby, and when Noble Team go to check, they soon discover that the Covenant are indeed on Reach. With the situation critical, Kat and Emile are taken by Jun ahead to Visegrád while Carter, Jorge, and Noble Six continue on the ground, dealing with any Covenant they find, and rescuing Three-Charlie, one of the missing UNSC trooper squads. Once reunited at the relay, after locking the Covenant out, they locate one of the scientists that was working at Visegrád, dead from a Covenant Energy Sword stab wound, Laszlo Sorvad, and his surviving daughter, Sára, only to be ambushed by a Covenant Elite Field Marshal and his two Zealot bodyguards. The Field Marshal escapes, leaving Noble Six and Jorge to kill the Zealots and their backup further into the relay before helping Kat restart the relay as best they can due to the plasma damage from the Covenant weaponry. Noble Team, sans Carter, depart and wait for pickup with Sára while Carter warns Holland of the threat.

Carter: Colonel, this is Noble One. There are no rebels. The Covenant are on Reach. Acknowledge?
Holland: Come again, Noble One. Did you say
Covenant?!
Carter: Affirmative. It's the WINTER CONTINGENCY.
Holland: ...May God Help Us All...
~ The UNSC's worst nightmare has begun

Two days later, on July 26th, Noble Team is sent to the Babd Catha Ice Shelf to protect the Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) Sword Base that was being besieged by a Covenant corvette. After clearing out the attacking Covenant, they then headed to the smaller Farragut Station and Airview Base to restore communications and activate the UNSC AA guns to deal with the Covenant air support in Phantoms and Banshees to allow Sword Base's airfield to get air support up to engage the Covenant air forces. Once communications and anti-aircraft artillery are back up, there was still the matter of clearing out the remaining Covenant in Sword Base before taking out their air forces so the Longswords could target the corvette for Reach's Orbital Defense Platforms to destroy with their MAC guns. Once the Banshees and Phantom are destroyed, the corvette tries to make a break for it, but the Longswords keep up until the corvette is punched clean through with a MAC round and plunges into the sea to sink to the bottom. The battle over, Noble Team is called down to speak with Doctor Catherine Halsey, who wished to speak to them about the events back at the relay hub. She takes particular interest in when they mention the Field Marshal and his Zealots that attacked them, explaining that those at ONI like herself believe the Covenant dispatch Zealot Elite advance search parties to hunt down artifacts of value to their religion, believing that they were at the relay and killed Professor Sorvad to get at the ONI excavation data stored there. Kat forks over a data module that Noble Six recovered from Sorvad's body back at the relay, hoping it would have the information she was looking for on it, before Noble Team take their leave from Halsey.

That night, Jun and Noble Six are on reconnaissance duty to see what the Covenant are up to. Aided by local militiamen, they are able to soon reach a hydroelectric power plant and find a Covenant pylon there that is the source of the dead zone where the UNSC can't gather any intel on the area. After quietly sabotaging it with a detonation charge in the power source, the Spartans and militia continue onward and notice the Covenant air traffic picking up with more Banshees and a Covenant corvette. Finally, Jun and Noble Six find what they are looking for: A massive Covenant attack force, large enough for an invasion.

As a result, on August 12th, a massive UNSC assault force engages the Covenant to try and stop it. With Noble Team's aid, Covenant AA is neutralized for UNSC air support to take out the Covenant ground armor, before turning its attention to a massive spire that seems to be teleporting Covenant reinforcements in from an unknown location. Though Noble Six manages to power down the spire's shields for the UNSC Grafton to destroy, this only leads to the Grafton being destroyed in turn by the massive Covenant CSO-class supercarrier Long Night of Solace.

The next day, August 13th, Noble Team is assigned a dangerous, if not suicidal, mission to take out the Long Night of Solace. With them unable to use the UNSC nuclear weapons against the supercarrier, they decide to pull something similar to what happened to a colony transport ship on its way to the colony Cygnus a couple of years earlier that left over seven hundred dead due to a slipspace drive malfunction that sent half the ship to oblivion. Thus, the following day, August 14th, Jorge and Noble Six are sent by Sabre rocket ships from the launch facility at Farkas Lake up to the space station Anchor 9. Joining the UNSC Savannah, they protect Anchor 9 until their own defenses are back up and running by taking out Banshees, Seraphs, and Phantoms. Once Anchor 9 has its own defenses back up, they quickly cut loose on the Covenant space forces, causing the smaller Banshees and Seraphs to flee once the Phantoms were eliminated. On board Anchor 9, the slipspace bomb is primed, and they've already picked out a Covenant corvette heading to the Long Night of Solace as their unlucky delivery prey. As Operation UPPERCUT begins, Six, Jorge, and the UNSC troopers with them are able to board the corvette while the Savannah jams its communications so it can't warn the supercarrier or the rest of the fleet, but only for so long.

Soon enough, the corvette attacks and engages the Savannah. Despite diverting all power and personnel to defenses and weapon systems, the Savannah is too late to disengage and retreat when ordered by Colonel Holland to pull back and is destroyed. Noble Six and their fire team clear out the corvette's bridge and set it on a refueling track with the Long Night of Solace, but upon returning to the hangar and Jorge, with the way back to the Sabres wrecked by the earlier attacks from the Savannah, the Pelican Jorge came in on is their only way out. Unfortunately, the slipspace bomb's timer is damaged, and the Pelican is also damaged beyond flight-capable escape. Jorge decides there is only one option now, and prepares to detonate the bomb manually, a suicidal move. Giving Noble Six his dog tags, he wishes his fellow Spartan good luck before pushing them out of the corvette to fall back to Reach via gravity while he carries on to finish UPPERCUT. Jorge's sacrifice results in the Long Night of Solace being split in two, but his triumph was in vain, as the Fleet of Particular Justice soon arrives over Reach to finish the job.

Over a week later, on August 23rd, after returning safely to Reach's surface, Noble Six makes their way to New Alexandria, being pounded by Covenant as UNSC forces attempt to evacuate the civvies from the city as fast as they can. Even with Noble Six's help, the Covenant are being merciless in slaughtering any transports trying to evac from the city. At one point, as Noble Six approaches one of the starports with civilian evac transports, one transport, 6-Echo-2, tries to depart after being told not to, and is promptly shot down by the corvette holding position overhead, sending it and the 600 civvies aboard to a watery grave, much to the horror of Noble Six's Falcon pilot.

Sergeant Major Duvall: Fox Actual to UNSC frigate Stalwart Dawn: request immediate airstrike on Covenant corvette over starport!
Stalwart Dawn: Solid copy, Fox Actual. Longswords are unavailable at this time. Over.
6 Echo 2: This is civilian transport 6 Echo 2: I need to go
now, Sergeant Major!
Duvall: Hold on, Echo Two.
Stalwart Dawn, I have multiple personal craft loaded with civilians! I have got to get them out of this city! I need air support, now!
Stalwart Dawn: As soon as something frees up, you'll be the first to--
Duvall: NOT GOOD ENOUGH!!
6 Echo 2: I've got six hundred souls on board, Sergeant Major! I can't wait any longer!
Duvall: Negative, Echo Two, I can't cover you! Do
not take off!
6 Echo 2:
DAMMIT!!
(Despite the warnings, 6 Echo 2 attempts to evac anyway, but is swiftly crippled by the corvette with a plasma torpedo)
Falcon Pilot: OH MY GOD!!
6 Echo 2: MAYDAY! MAYDAY!
Duvall: Six Echo Two, can you maintain altitude?!
6 Echo 2: NEGATIVE! WE'RE GOING DOWN!
Falcon Pilot: Son of a bitch! I can't watch this...
~ New Alexandria's civilians are shown no mercy by the Covenant as they try to flee Reach

Noble Six regroups with Duvall and his men, and moves quickly to get the AA batteries back online to engage the corvette and allow the surviving transports full of civilians to safely evacuate, despite heavy resistance from the Covenant ground forces, including Brutes and Wraiths. Crippled by the missile barrage, the corvette is forced to withdraw as the remaining transports safely escape with their innocent aboard. Noble Six is then picked up and returned to regroup with the rest of the surviving Noble Team. However, after rejoining them, Noble Six works with Kat to help any surviving UNSC forces in New Alexandria evacuate as the city is overrun with Covenant and about to be glassed. Once all UNSC forces are safely evacuated, and Noble Six takes out the Covenant jammers that were preventing communications between UNSC forces, Noble Team have to make for a bunker as the city is glassed by the Covenant. While doing so, Kat is in the middle of complaining about returning to Sword Base, which was now under Covenant control, for a torch-and-burn op to protect Halsey's data, when she is fatally shot through the head by the Field Marshal that escaped from Visegrád previously, who escapes on his Phantom before the others can avenge Kat. They retrieve her body and escape into the bunker with the remaining civvies before sealing the doors. About three days later, on August 26th, Noble Team emerge from the bunker with the civvies to see New Alexandria in ruins before hailing a Pelican to come pick them up.

Three more days later, on August 29th, the remaining four members of Noble Team head to Sword Base to carry out their torch-and-burn op. Upon reaching what looked like a dead end, they find a secret passage that leads under Sword Base. Contacted by Dr. Halsey, she reveals the Forerunner artifact under Sword Base she had been researching and confirmed with the data Noble Team recovered from the late Professor Sorvad. Upon finding Halsey's lab, Noble Team put up a fierce defense of it to protect Halsey from the Covenant. When she is finished, she reveals the A.I. Cortana to Noble Team, and their orders to get it to the UNSC Pillar of Autumn, a Halcyon-class light cruiser at the shipyards in Aszod, who will get Cortana off Reach, and with her, Humanity's only hope for survival against the Covenant. Halsey and Noble Team then withdraw to two Pelicans to evac out of the area. Jun is assigned to go with Halsey and keep her safe en route to CASTLE Base, even killing her if it means keeping her knowledge out of Covenant hands, while Carter, Emile, and Noble Six head to Aszod with Cortana, while the demo charges destroy Sword Base and the Forerunner excavation site, preventing them from being used by the Covenant.

Down to three members with Jun safe with Halsey, Noble Team head to Aszod. On August 30th, Carter's Pelican is under heavy fire as Noble Six checks on him and Emile tries to keep the enemy off their back. Critically wounded, Carter orders Six and Emile to abandon ship and get Cortana to the Autumn. When a Covenant Scarab blocks their way, Carter sacrifices himself to ram it into the canyon with his crippled Pelican, destroying it and killing him as well. Emile and Noble Six continue to the Autumn, and are soon contacted by Captain Jacob Keyes, who warns them to hurry to his launch site as he can't abort the takeoff of the Autumn if they are late. Aided by the surviving UNSC Army troopers and Marines defending the shipyards for the Autumn to escape, they reach the drydock, only to learn that one of them will need to man the mass driver gun emplacement to cover the Autumn so it can launch. Emile stays behind to man the gun while Six delivers Cortana to Keyes. Once Keyes has Cortana, he flees back to the Autumn to begin their escape, while Six sees Emile be fatally stabbed by a Zealot Elite, but takes it down with him. With the mass driver unmanned, and the Autumn still stuck in drydock, Noble Six decides to make a last stand and man the gun themselves to give the Autumn the time it needs to escape.

UNSC Marine: Lieutenant! Get on board! We gotta get the hell outta here!
Noble Six: Negative. I have the gun. Good luck, sir.
Captain Jacob Keyes: Good luck to you, Spartan.
~ Noble Six ensures Humanity's survival at the cost of their own life

However, the Field Marshal from Visegrád blocks Noble Six's path with several Zealots and other Covenant. Six kills them all, saving the Field Marshal for last, slaying him and avenging all those who died at his hands, including the other Nobles and civvies, before manning the mass driver and covering the Autumn as it launches and makes its escape from Aszod and Reach, taking out Phantoms and a CCS-class battlecruiser before it could use its energy projector on the grounded Autumn. With the Autumn gone, and Cortana and Master Chief safely aboard, Six makes their last stand against unending waves of Covenant before finally falling in battle themselves.

However, Noble Team's sacrifices were not in vain, as the Human-Covenant War ended in victory for the UNSC, and within 40 years of the Fall of Reach, the planet had been terraformed and was being colonized again.

Trivia[]

  • This team is a Five Man Band.
  • In both Halo games where you don't play as Master Chief (the other being Halo 3: ODST, you play as the new recruit of a fireteam.
  • The flag in Capture The Flag multiplayer in Halo: Reach bears the emblem of Noble Team.
  • In gameplay, the members of Noble Team (besides Noble Six, the player) are invincible. This is because some areas you cannot get past without certain members, and because 5/6 members die in story cutscenes anyway.
  • The logo for Noble Team is the icon for Halo: Reach on the Xbox 360.
