Nog, son of Rom, was a Ferengi male introduced in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
Nog was portrayed by the late Aron Eisenberg.
As a young man Nog came to the Cardassian station Terok Nor with his father and uncle to work in his uncle's bar. After the Cardassians withdrew the station became Deep Space Nine. After Nog was arrested attempting to steal from a local store, Commander Benjamin Sisko convinced Quark and Rom to stay in exchange for Nog's freedom.
Nog soon became friends with Sisko's son Jake Sisko. At first Sisko did not approve of the two being friends, but dropped his objections when he saw that his son was a positive influence on the young Ferengi Due to Jake's assistance Nog learned how to read and began to follow in his father's footsteps as an engineer. Knowing that he would never be as good a businessman as Quark, Nog decided he didn't want to wind up like his father, working away in the bar while his talents went to waste. He decided then to enter Starfleet, and with Captain Sisko's sponsorship gained admission to the academy. Nog was the first Ferengi to enter Starfleet, much to the consternation of his uncle Quark.
After his first year Nog was posted back to DS9 for field work. He would finish his training at DS9 as the Dominion War began, and as a Starfleet officer fought against the Dominion as they tried to conquer the Alpha Quadrant. Nog lost a leg in battle against the Jem'Hadar, an experience that forced Nog to confront his own fears.
Following the war Nog remained on DS9. One of Sisko's last acts before leaving to confront Gul Dukat and subsequently joining the prophets was to promote Nog to lieutenant junior grade. Reporting to his new CO, Colonel Kira Nerys, he was a very different man than the teenager Kira met from when he first came on to DS9.
By the early 25th century Nog had reached the rank of Captain in Starfleet. Being the first Ferengi in Starfleet, he inspired a number of Ferengi to join, with four Ferengi cadets in the 2396 class at Starfleet Academy.
In the 32nd century, the Federation fielded an Eisenberg-class starship named USS Nog in memory of Nog.
