~ Jedi Master Ood Bnar on Nomi Sunrider. |
Nomi Sunrider (born name as Nomi Da-Boda) is a major character of the Old Republic Era of the Star Wars franchise, serving as the deuteragonist of the Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi comic series from Star Wars Legends.
She is a housewife and mother who undergoes Jedi training after the death of her Jedi husband. She fought many wars and battles during her life, including the Freedon Nadd Uprising and the Great Sith War, during which she proved to be a very powerful Jedi with great faith in the light side of the Force. She is a love interest turned enemy of Ulic Qel-Droma after the latter became a Sith Lord.
At some point, Nomi attained the rank of Jedi Master and further down was named Grand Master, the leader of the Jedi Order. In the following four millenia, Nomi is remembered as a legend among the Order, one of the greatest Jedi who ever lived and an embodiment of loyalty to the light side.
History[]
At some point in her youth, Nomi Da-Boda married Jedi Knight Andur Sunrider and the two had a daughter named Vima Sunrider. Andur recognized Nomi's Force sensitivity and said she could become very powerful, but Nomi was reluctant and afraid, so she refused. After Andur was murdered by Hutt gangsters, Nomi decided to become a Jedi. She was eventually trained by the great Jedi Master Thon, while also taking care of her daughter.
After completing her training, she was sent to Onderon to aid Jedi siblings Ulic and Cay Qel-Droma in fighting the Onderon Royal Family, who led a dark side cult who worshipped the ancient Dark Jedi Freedon Nadd. Nomi proved to skilled and powerful Jedi, and she personally helped defeat the dark side sorcerer King Ommin.
Shortly after, another dark side cult emerged in the Empress Teta system known as the Krath. During the conflict, Ulic Qel-Droma decided to infiltrate the cult and help destroy it from within. Right before he left, Ulic and Nomi acknowledged their love for each other and kissed. Unfortunately, the infiltration failed and Ulic ultimately fell to the dark side. He later joins forces with another fallen Jedi, Exar Kun, and the two formed the Brotherhood of the Sith and created a Sith Empire to conquer the galaxy, with Kun as Dark Lord and Qel-Droma as his apprentice.
Nomi and Cay eventually discovered Ulic's betrayal when he invaded Coruscant alongside the Mandalorian Crusaders. Ulic engaged them in a duel, and Nomi eventually imprisoned him in a light side wall. During Ulic's trial, he stated he did nothing wrong and defended his actions, shocking Nomi and breaking her heart before Ulic was broken out by Exar Kun and Mandalore the Indomitable.
As the war continued, Nomi and Cay eventually faced Ulic again during the Battle of Ossus, and Nomi watched as Ulic killed Cay. Devastated by the loss of her friend, Nomi used her light side power to cut Ulic off from the Force entirely. Ulic, guilt ridden by his murder of his brother and now feeling deep remorse by his other actions, submitted to Nomi, accepted his punishment and agreed to help the Jedi and Republic defeat the Brotherhood of the Sith. They eventually faced off Exar Kun on the Sith Empire's capital on Yavin IV, in which Nomi used the power of the light side of the Force to seal Kun's spirit inside the Great Temple.
In the decade after the Great Sith War ended, Nomi reached the rank of Grand Master of the Jedi Order. Nomi struggled to bring the order back together, especially with the Jedi Sylvar. She was also having problems with her daughter, Vima, due to her position as leader of the Jedi Order preventing her from training Vima. The two had an argument when Vima wanted to be trained by Ulic Qel-Droma. After seeing Vima training with Qel-Droma, the first time Nomi had seen him in years, she eventually allowed it after seeing Qel-Droma's humility.
Eventually Sylvar attacked Qel-Droma and Nomi arrived as the duel was almost over. When Qel-Droma dropped his weapon to allow Sylvar to strike him down, Sylvar refused. However, Qel-Droma was immediately gunned down by a pilot who wanted to be famous. Nomi was devastated by Qel-Droma's death and personally felt the pain of the blaster. She cradled the dead former Jedi's body before it vanished, becoming one with the Force. Realizing Qel-Droma had truly redeemed himself, she and her daughter returned home.
Personality[]
Nomi initially started out as reluctant to become a Jedi after witnessing her Jedi husband’s death and being forced to kill his two murderers in self-defense. Even after deciding to become a Jedi, she refused to have a lightsaber in order to train as a pacifistic Jedi. However, she learned that a lightsaber and being willing to defend yourself was necessary to become a Jedi and embraced it. She became a confident and skilled Jedi whilst remaining a loving and caring mother to Vima. She also had a remorseful side as she felt immense guilt after cutting Ulic off from the Force when Ulic killed his brother but which luckily inspired Ulic to realize what he had done and redeem himself. She also felt remorse for Exar Kun’s incineration of Yavin 4 and dedicated the Jedi Order to rebuilding the moon and restorating its ecosystem.
As Grand Master, she would retain her personality although she had attained much more wisdom as a result of the decades past. She also displayed a capacity to forgive and admit her faults when she understood why her daughter ran away since Nomi was too busy as Grand Master to teach her and tearfully hugged her daughter as an apology for neglecting to train her. She would forgive her former lover Ulic Qel-Droma and after his death, she would admire him for staying redeemed on the light side even after losing everything.
Powers and Abilities[]
Although she originally had no intention of becoming a Jedi, Nomi was a prodigy who possessed a powerful connection to the Force. After training with Masters Thon and Odan-Urr, Nomi became an exceptionally powerful Jedi, on par with Qel-Droma and Exar Kun themselves. Her innate power and dedication to the light side of the Force allowed her to become the leader of the Jedi Order. Sunrider specialized in unique, esoteric light side powers that allowed her to face off against the most powerful dark side sorcerers of her time. She is regarded as one of the strongest and greatest Jedi.
