Hello, I'm the Nostalgia Critic. I remember it, so you don't have to!
~ The Nostalgia Critic's introduction as well as his most famous catchphrase.

The Nostalgia Critic is the titular main protagonist of the franchise of the same name. He is a very famous character on the site channelawesome.com, and he knows it, taking advantage of his fame whenever possible (enough to actually call himself a "God").

He can get very angry if the movie's bad enough, or if his pride is put to test. He is also known for carrying a trademark handgun with him, and also for getting incredibly insane if someone mentions a "bat-credit card", due to the trauma of reviewing Batman & Robin. However, he is sane enough to tell right from obscenely wrong and does know his limits when he is calm enough to think. The Critic is a big enemy of the Angry Video Game Nerd, but in real life, Doug and James Rolfe are actually really good friends.

In the fourth TGWTG special, To Boldly Flee, the Critic merged with a plothole that absorbed the universe to stop it from becoming unstable. He spent a period of time as bad movie director and former child star Donnie DuPre until he was brought back by the plot hole and resumed his old job.

He is portrayed by Douglas Darrien Walker himself, who also portrayed Daniel the Demonslayer in Smiling Friends.

Personality[]

Nostalgia Critic is a very complex character when it comes to morality scale. He can be stubborn, egotistical and prone to anger and extreme violence. However, he fiercely protects kids but has no patience for annoying dogs, he trashes other people's nostalgia but can't make it through Follow That Bird without squeeing, he's demanding of Chester but is the only one to give him money and a place to stay. Likewise, he can be quite rude to people but is so very loyal to the ones he cares about. In To Boldly Flee the Critic has genuinely altruistic motives and no dark moments other than indulging Chick's hate of Lupa by giving her Lupa's number so they could prank call her. Earlier on, he arguably leaned towards a Pragmatic Hero territory since Suburban Knights, as he genuinely cares for his team mates and shows both courage and surprisingly strong leadership in the final battle. The Nostalgia Critic knows the world can be a dark and cruel place, but he still mostly wants to do good.

Trivia[]

  • The Nostalgia Critic is a fictitious and exaggerated persona of creator/actor Doug Walker and often an avatar of his brother and writer Rob Walker's gripes.
  • As The Nostalgia Critic is neither entirely based on Doug or Rob and exaggerated for comedic effect the two do side segments about their real thoughts or contrasting views on movies the Nostalgia Critic has reviewed.
  • Doug Walker almost never breaks character and specifically shrugs off any ties to himself in real-life so as to let the Critic be his own character however he is not above reference to himself as a real person, such as the Critic's spirit animal being named "Doug Walker", or reference the Avatar series even though he has never seen it but Doug did a blog series about each episode or how he hates the series Doug specially because it associates the name "Doug" to being spineless and naive.
