OJ Haywood is the main protagonist of the 2022 horror western science film, Nope.

He is portrayed by Daniel Kaluuya, who also portrayed W’Kabi in Black Panther, Chris Washington in Get Out, and Spider-Punk in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

Story[]

Haunted by the mystery of their father's death, OJ and his sister Emerald took an interest in the object hidden in the clouds. However, their obsession with capturing an alien on camera eventually forged a full-blown war that threatened both species' lives.

It's certainly not a coincidence the Haywood siblings survived, and OJ had a big part in that. He was the one that first witnessed the object in the sky and realized that it was an alien instead of a UFO. Around midway through the film, OJ realized the alien decided on its target by locking eyes. And that method was proven to be lifesaving under multiple circumstances in the movie. Throughout the film, OJ also made some of the boldest moves but always escaped death by being one small step ahead. For instance, on his way back to their family house, as Jean Jacket floated above his head, OJ chose to stay in the car no matter what.

Personality[]

OJ seems to struggle in social settings, prefers being around his horses over people, is stubbornly set in his ways and struggles to make eye contact in general. However, he later tries to save Angel, Emerald, and a TMZ reporter despite the great personal risk that would have on him. OJ succeeds in saving Emerald and Angel, but the reporter becomes a victim to the UFO.

Trivia[]

  • This role was one reason why Daniel Kaluuya couldn’t reprise his role as W'Kabi in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever due to Nope’s scheduling conflicts.
