Octolings are a major species in the Splatoon franchise. They are evolved versions of octopi that have become humanoid, and are a type of Octarians. They are also formerly rivals with the Inklings, before they immigrated to Inkopolis Square, after the events of Splatoon 2's Octo Expansion DLC.
While they only appeared as enemies in Splatoon and Splatoon 2's Hero Mode campaigns, they are playable after beating Splatoon 2's Octo Expansion, and are a default option alongside their squid counterparts in Splatoon 3.
History[]
The Octolings, alongside other Octarians, evolved from octopi after humanity and all other mammals went extinct due to sea levels rising drastically. After they absorbed liquid crystals that were filled with the collective desires of humanity, they, alongside the Inklings and various other marine creatures, left the ocean for the surface, and thus starts the Mollusc Era. The Inklings and Octarians appeared to be on good terms, before the rising sea turned them against each other in what is known as the Great Turf War, in which the Inklings were victorious, said to be due to the Inklings' greater number of limbs and the Octarians' Great Octoweapons being unplugged. Following this, the Octarians retreated to some underground domes.
When the power of the Octarians' domes are running low, their leader, DJ Octavio, orders them to steal the Great Zapfish from Inkopolis Plaza. Because of this, Cap'n Cuttlefish, the leader of the Squidbeak Splatoon, a gang of Inklings who fought in the Great Turf War, recruits a young Inkling to be Agent 3 of the New Squidbeak Splatoon and rescue the Great Zapfish. When Agent 3 comes face-to-face with DJ Octavio, the Squid Sisters, or Agents 1 and 2, hack into Octavio's radio and play the Calamari Inkantation, making it easier for Agent 3 to defeat him and rescue the Great Zapfish. This act of playing the Calamari Inkantation is later revealed to be a major event, as it inspired many Octolings (such as Marina Ida and Agent 8) to rebel against their authoritarian ways and escape to the surface, with many Inklings mistaking them for their own kind, just with weird-looking hair.
Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion introduces the first Octoling protagonist, being Agent 8. They are stranded in the Deepsea Metro with Cap'n Cuttlefish after a fight between them and Agent 3. Agent 8, with help from Cuttlefish and Off the Hook, navigates the metro and finds four 'thangs' as requested by a strange telephone. It is revealed that several of the Octolings in Octavio's army, along with other Octarians, have been completely sanitized by Kamabo Co., having effectively been turned into zombies. After Agent 8 finds the thangs, the telephone reassembles them into making a blender, and attempts to blend Agent 8 and Cuttlefish alive, before Agent 8 comes in and rescues them. Agent 8 escapes through a hole in the ceiling Agent 3 made and eventually fights Agent 3 on an elevator, who has been brainwashed by the telephone. After the mind-controlled Agent 3 is defeated, Agent 8 reaches the surface, where they are picked up by Off the Hook in a helicopter. All of a sudden, a humanoid statue emerges from the sea, inside of it being the telephone from before. It reveals its name to be Commander Tartar and states its plan to destroy Inkopolis and start anew. Agent 8 eventually defeats Tartar with help from Off the Hook. After these events, more Octolings move to Inkopolis.
In Splatoon 3's Return of the Mammalians campaign, several Octolings, alongside other Octarians, have been corrupted by Mr. Grizz's Fuzzy Ooze, similar to Tartar's sanitization.
