Odanna is one of the main characters of light novel, manga and anime series, Kakuriyo -Bed & Breakfast for Spirits-.

He is voiced by Katsuyuki Konishi in the Japanese version and Christopher Wehkamp in the English version.

Appearance[]

He has black hair and red eyes with horns. He is also pretty much always seen in his usual black kimono when appearing in his usual form, and is quite tall, towering over many of the other characters. He sometimes wears an ogre mask, such as when first meeting Aoi in the Apparent Realm, which is designed to make him look more like a typical ogre, but he otherwise doesn't wear it very often. However, he is also capable of altering his appearance to varying degrees as part of various disguises and alternate identities he takes on, mostly when venturing to the Apparent Realm/human world. He also does this for much of the second half of the anime series, during which he's in disguise as a fish peddler while visiting Aoi after she's taken to Orio-ya to help her by providing her with various supplies she needs.

Personality[]

Odanna has a reputation for being cold and merciless, and at first, he doesn't leave the the most positive impression on Aoi due to kidnapping and bringing her to the Hidden Realm and trying to force her to be his bride to settle her late grandfather, Shiro's, debt. He also acts somewhat arrogant and rude to her in general when she initially refuses and tries to work off the debt instead, openly scoffing at her resolve, acting like she should consider herself lucky to be given the opportunity to be his bride and is being ungrateful to not immediately accept it.

However, before long, Odanna begins to show his more positive and kind side; after Aoi helps resolve a dispute between some of his staff and the tengu clan by helping their elder, Matsuba, thereby salvaging their business relationship with them, he becomes more supportive of her attempts to open an eatery there to work off the debt and frequently shows admiration for how kind and hard-working she is. It is also revealed that pretty much all of Tenjin-ya's employees are extremely loyal to him since he cares for them a lot even though he doesn't tend to openly show it; in many cases, he saved them from previous unideal situations by taking them in and allowing them to work at the inn, like Oryo, the snow woman who works as the young hostess, whom he saved from her previous, abusive master, and Akatsuki, the earth spider who works as the front manager, whom he took in after Shiro could no longer take care of him and his younger sister, Suzuran, in the Apparent Realm.

He is generally not particularly strict, though he will discipline them on occasion if they act irresponsibly and directly disobey his orders, like harshly criticizing Oryo for her immaturity and temporarily confining her to her room when she leaves her post to follow him and Aoi to the capital city and trying to get Aoi eaten by ayakashi by exposing her identity as a human while there, and ordering the Chief Chef and his assistants to work at Tenjin-ya for many years to come after the latter lock Aoi in a storage room to prevent her from fulfilling a request to cook an anniversary meal for a royal couple and Aoi refuses to let the Chief Chef resign. He is also noted by Oryo to highly value those who are willing to work hard to reach their full potential.

As the series goes on, he develops a very positive relationship with Aoi, saving her life on more than one occasion, and helping her run Moonflower by offering her advice and even personally getting her ingredients she needs to make certain recipes. He also develops a playful dynamic with her where he still frequently teases her about becoming his bride, such as not missing a chance to note that he's doing the kinds of things for her that a husband would or extending an offer to sleep with him. He becomes extremely fond of her cooking too, actively lookng forward to opportunities when he gets to eat it. Likewise, he is extremely protective of Aoi, best exemplified when he threatens Raiju that he'll consume every trace of him if he ever tries to hurt or even touch her ever again. Another notable trait of his is that he is pretty calm and even-tempered, rarely ever getting openly angry or raising his voice, and even on the few occasions he clearly is mad, such as with Raiju for how he treated Aoi, he will merely glare and speak in a stern tone, which is enough to convey to others that he is not to be trifled with.

History[]

Soem time after Aoi's grandfather's death, Aoi walks past a torii shrine and she sees an ayakashi sitting there who tell her that they're hungry. However, after giving it food, Aoi is kidnapped by the ayakashi, an ogre called Odanna. He takes her to the Hidden Realm, a world where all the Ayakashi live. He tells Aoi that her grandfather owed him a debt, and as compensation, she must marry him. However, Aoi negotiates with the ogre instead, asking to work at his inn, the Tenjin'ya. At first, he scoffs at this resolve and doesn't believe she'll stick with it very long before resolving to become his bride, but after Aoi helps salvage his inn's relationship with the tengu clan by nursing their elder, Matsuba, back to health and feeding him a good meal after he ends up passed out drunk just outside the building where's she's hoping to set up, he begins to believe in her potential more, as well as starts to admire her dedication and all-around positive character. He also begins to do various nice things for her, such as giving her gifts, giving her advice on how to run Moonflower, which is the name she and Ginji eventually decide to give their restaurant at Matsuba's suggestion, and even gets ingredients for her that she needs for certain recipes on occasion, all the while teasing her and hoping she'll still decide to become his bride. He also comes to her rescue at one point when she gets locked in an underground storage room by the Chief Chef''s assistants to prevent her from being able to cook an anniversary meal for a royal couple, which unexpectedly floods and almost causes her to drown when rain leaks in there, which the assistants didn't intend. During this period that Aoi integrates into Tenjin-ya and the Hidden Realm as a whole, she also learns more about how benevolent he really is, including how he saved some of his employees by letting them work at his inn. All of this causes the two to gradually become closer, despite Aoi still refusing to marry him.

Partway through the series, when Aoi is taken along with Ginji to Orio-ya, a rival inn to Tenjin-ya located in the Southern Lands, due to her attempting to prevent them from taking him back, Odanna goes undercover as a fish peddler by slightly altering his appearance. Under his false identity, he provides Aoi with various supplies so she can cook properly to meet some of the demands the inn's manager, Ranmaru, places on her, like making meals for Matsuba while he's staying there. He also offers to help her escape, but she refuses to leave without Ginji, to which he reveals to her that the reason he didn't stop Orio-ya from taking Ginji back is because the land is cursed, and that he has been summoned back to them to help ensure the success of a ceremony they hold once every century to fend off the curse and prevent everyone who lives there from being ravaged by natural disasters, meaning he can't go back until they've completed it. He also tells her about another realm called the Eternal Realm during one of their excursions.

After learning even more about the situation from Hatori, Aoi resolves to help as much as she can with the ceremony as well, and during this time, he plays an important supporting role by helping her retrieve one of the treasures they need for it, a mermaid scale, by accompanying her to the Dragon Palace where they can be found, since he isn't as badly affected by the miasma surrounding it compared to Ginji and Ranmaru. During the journey, he saves Aoi from being killed by another ogre infected by the miasma by engaging it in battle and destroying it. He also helps Orio-ya pull off the ceremony when a malicious ayakashi named Raiju attempts to sabotage it by spreading the word about their fireworks celebrations, causing many guests to arrive when it's supposed to be held via airship, preventing them from setting them off. However, Odanna brings many of his guests from Tenjin-ya there for it too along with some of his staff members, and he proposes to Ranmaru that they put their usual rivalry aside by allowing him and his staff to help them manage the abundance of guests so they can set off their fireworks, which are needed to get the attention of the Umi-bouzu to hold the rest of the ceremony, in exchange for letting his guests stay there, which Ranmaru agrees to.
