Oerba Dia Vanille is a playable character, the narrator and the deuteragonist in Final Fantasy XIII. Her full name stands for "Vanille of the Dia clan, from the village of Oerba."
She was voiced by Yukari Fukui in the Japanese version, and by Georgia van Cuylenburg in the English version.
Appearance[]
| “ | "My name is Oerba Dia Vanille. I'm a l'Cie from Gran Pulse. And to everyone on Cocoon... evil." | „ |
| ~ —Vanille to Sazh |
Vanille, despite her actual age, possesses the youthful appearance of a nineteen-year-old. Her vibrant red hair is styled in curled pigtails, green eyes and pierced ears, which are decorated with silver hoop earrings. She is dressed in a light pink halter top paired with an orange and yellow skirt, along with beige boots. A fur pelt is draped around her waist, serving as a means to carry her weapon. Additionally, she adorns herself with multiple bracelets and three beaded necklaces, along with various beads attached to different parts of her attire. The l'Cie brand on her upper left thigh is mostly concealed beneath her skirt.
In Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, Vanille wears the same usual outfit and wears a headdress resembling a traditional Indian dupatta. The headdress is comprised of a semi-transparent red and gold veil that covers her hair and shoulders, gold ornaments that cover her forehead, and two long silver horn-like ornaments that resemble Bhunivelze's crest, which serves as the Order of Salvation's symbol, attached to the back and curving around the sides of her head.
Personality[]
In Final Fantasy XIII, Vanille embodies a sense of childlike innocence. She is thoughtful, compassionate, and at times, resolute and obstinate. Vanille possesses a deep empathy, often moved to tears, and has a profound care for others, particularly for Fang. Despite enduring numerous challenges, she maintains a nurturing and optimistic demeanor, striving to remain hopeful in circumstances that others may view as bleak. She endeavors to uplift her friends during their low moments and seeks to find the silver lining in every situation; however, her cheerful exterior serves as a mask to conceal her underlying fears and guilt. Throughout her journey, Vanille learns to confront her past errors, cease evading her issues, and advocate for her friends and her beliefs.
In Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, having lived under the protection of the Order and influenced by its doctrines, Vanille has become a devotee of Bhunivelze, aiming to assist the group in fulfilling his intentions. She shares a close friendship with Lumina, who describes their bond as being "thick as thieves." Vanille has adopted a more serious demeanor instead of showing her usual cheerful personality, as she continues to grapple with the guilt stemming from the pain her previous actions inflicted, hoping to utilize her newfound abilities to seek redemption.
