Old Bird is a member of the Chozo species who is first seen in a flashback in Metroid: Zero Mission. He is the adoptive father of Samus Aran who took her in after her parents got killed by Space Pirates. Old Bird appears in a Super Metroid comic where he works with the Galactic Federation. He helps Samus repair her armor in front of Armstrong Houston.

Metroid Zero Mission[]
Old Bird arrives on the Planet K2L once Samus' parents are killed during a Space Pirate attack. Old Bird adopts and takes cares of Samus when he takes her back to Zebes. Old Bird oversaw the process that incorporated some of Gray Voice's Chozo DNA into Samus's genetic structure, which would enhance her abilities. Afterwards, Old Bird would train Samus to become a fearsome warrior. Samus is seen drawing a photo of Old Bird and Gray Voice.
Super Metroid Comic[]
Samus Aran and Armstrong Houston arrive on Zebes. Samus explains the story of the Chozo to Houston while Old Bird uses a Power Bomb to repair Samus' suit. Old Bird is concerned, but uses it and it ends up working.
