Captain Oliver Charles "Charlie" Queenan is the overarching protagonist of the 2006 crime drama, The Departed. He is the captain of the Massachusetts State Police (MSP) who sets up a special task force to take down Irish mob boss, Frank Costello.
He was played by Martin Sheen who also played Ben Willard in Apocalypse Now and Ben Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man films.
Biography[]
Queenan was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts to an Irish-Catholic family. It's implied by Frank Costello that Queenan's father abandoned him and his family. At some point in his life, Queenan joined the MSP as well as marrying a woman whom he'd have a son with named Patrick. By the time of The Departed, Queenan says that Patrick is currently attending college, studying law at Notre Dame. It's also implied that he's a religious man.
The Departed (2006)[]
Queenan and MSP Staff Sergeant Sean Dignam, set up a special task force alongside the FBI to arrest Frank Costello. Queenan hires Billy Costigan to infiltrate Costello's crew as a mole. Queenan and Dignam set up fake records for Costigan and makes him serve a stint in prison so they can make his story more believable. Costigan successfully enters into Costello's gang, and for over a year, he acts as a mole. At some point, Costigan calls Queenan to set up Costello's arrest and to finally end the undercover operation. Colin Sullivan (Costello's mole in the MSP) tricks some officers into believing that Queenan is Costello's mole. Queenan meets up with Costigan at an abandoned building but are ambushed by Costello's men. Costigan successfully flees without being seen, but Queenan stays behind. Costello's men later throw Queenan out of the building, causing him to fall to his death right in front of the escaped Costigan.
Personality[]
Queenan is shown to act very nice, and sometimes has to break up fights between Dignam and Costigan.
