Omochao (オモチャオ Omochao?) is a supporting character in the Sonic the Hedgehog video game series.
He is a robotic Chao who provides hints to the player. His name is a portmanteau of the Japanese word omocha, meaning "toy", and Chao. In some games, he is named Robochao in English, but he is always called Omochao in Japanese.
Omochao is featured in the games Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 for Sega Dreamcast, Sonic Adventure DX, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle for the GameCube, Sonic Pinball Party, Sonic Battle, and Sonic Advance 3, for the Game Boy Advance, and the multi-console games Sonic Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Riders, Mario and Sonic at The Olympic Winter Games, Sonic Free Riders, and Sonic Generations. He also appears as a guide in Sonic and the Secret Rings Party Mode menu.
In the Japanese version, as with various Chao, he is voiced by Etsuko Kozakura in all of his appearances.
In English, he has been voiced by Lani Minella between 2001 and 2003 and in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, Liza Jacqueline in Sonic Riders, Rebecca Honig in Sonic and the Secret Rings, Laura Bailey between 2010 and 2011, and currently by Erica Lindbeck since 2019, who also voices Blaze the Cat in the same series.
Overview[]
Omochao is a robotic Chao who appears in a variety of games and places to serve as an informant for characters and offer hints and advice to players whether they want it or not. He also works as a TV personality, serving as an announcer for racing events.
Personality[]
Omochao is a friendly, helpful and cheerful robot who is usually willing to provide aid to those who seeks his help. However, he has his limits when people begin to abuse or roughhouse with him.
Abilities[]
Described as all-knowing, Omochao possesses a vast and unlimited knowledge―he knows everything about everything. He is also one of the few, if not only, individuals who can understand the language of animals.
Deviating from normal Chao, Omochao is able to talk in human language, though he exhibits a verbal tic (in Japanese): he nearly always adds "Chao" to the ends of his sentences.
With the propeller coming out of his head, Omochao is able to fly. He can as well survive many injuries, including being scorched by any dangerous machinery or used as a weapon to throw at enemies or even a bomb.

Trivia[]
- Due to his hints being repetitive and somewhat obvious and thus of little help, Omochao has become one of the most hated Sonic the Hedgehog characters among the fans.
- According to The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog, Omochao is guilty of medical malpractice.
- Despite using male pronouns in most games, he is referred to with gender-neutral pronouns in The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog, akin to organic Chao. Ironically, an organic Chao is referred to with male pronouns in the same game. Whether this is a mistake or not is unknown.
