~ Ono's Catchphrase and first word |
Ono is a major character of the 2015 TV film The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar and its 2016 follow-up series The Lion Guard, based on the 1994 film The Lion King. He's a young egret and along with his friends Kion, Bunga, Fuli, and Beshte form The Lion Guard to protect The Pride Lands from threats such as hyenas.
He was voiced by Atticus Shaffer who also voices Peedee Fryman.
Personality[]
He's one of the more easygoing members of the group, being social and group-oriented. He's used to spending time around other animals and is content to be part of The Lion Guard. Ono is also shown to be blunt, as he is able to lay out his feelings without sugar-coating. He is, by far, the most realistic member of the group, as he constantly thinks things through before jumping in.
Whenever it comes to his role on the Lion Guard, Ono is valiant and has a knack for following procedures. He obeys Kion's orders without question and proves himself to be plucky and thrifty, considerably useful whenever it comes to scouting out a situation. His principles are clear in his preparations to fight with his full heart for the Circle of Life, and he's a valued member of the Lion Guard for his brilliance and ability to see things from afar. During the final confrontation against Scar, Ono rescued Bunga from falling into volcano, consequently sucking so much smog that resulted with near loss of his vision. He lent on his position as the keenest of sight to Anga, but still he remains as a member of the Lion Guard after Kion bestowed him the new title of the smartest.
History[]
The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar[]
When Bunga and Kion race through the Pride Lands playing Baobab Ball, they encounter Ono, who along with his flock, flits fearfully out of their way.
Later, after Kion learns that he is to lead the Lion Guard, he appoints Beshte, Fuli, and Ono to positions on the Guard. He gathers the team together and attempts to show them the Roar of the Elders, but all that comes out is a squeak. Just then, Kion's father Simba shows up and reacts in shock to Kion's decision of teammates. He insists that the Guard must be made of lions only and reprimands Kion for treating his role as leader like a game.
Not long after this, the team learns that the hyenas are attacking a herd of gazelles which have cause a stampede, trapping Kion's older sister Kiara. With no time to lose, Kion assembles the Lion Guard, using his paw to gift each of them with a special shoulder marking.
Together, the five friends attack the hyenas, driving them back into the Outlands. Kion completes the fight with the powerful Roar of the Elders, and even the hyenas' leader Janja departs in horror. Simba happens to watch from a nearby ridge and realizes that his son was judicious to have chosen who he decided. He congratulates his son on the victory and accepts this new, brilliant assembling of steadfast animals.
The Lion Guard[]
Set after the film, Ono continues serving in The Lion Guard.
In Seasons 1-2, the Lion Guard continues battling Janja and his clan, though also comes up against other villainous animals such as the new crocodile leader Makuu (who has since reformed), a pack of jackals led by Reirei and most recently, the spirit of Kion's great-uncle Scar (who was the leader of the previous Lion Guard) as of season 2.
Though Kion is the protagonist, Ono is sometimes the focus of certain episodes such as 'The Eye of the Beholder' where Ono, while chasing off Janja and his clan, has dust accidentally kicked into his eyes which temporarily disables his sight. This upsets Ono who at first believes he is no longer of use to the Lion Guard but is dispelled of this notion when he saves them from a trap Janja had set.
In 'Never Roar Again,' Ono loses the feathers on his head when Kion accidentally uses the roar which causes Ono embarrassment but by the end of the episode he comes to terms with it in a way.
In 'Ono and the Egg,' Ono finds an egg in his nest which was placed there by a hammerkop (which Ono is able to instantly recognize). Ono is initially upset about this and wants the egg gone though once it hatches he starts to take on a fatherly role around it, doing his best to protect the hatchling from dangers like an eagle whose after it alongside the vulture Mwoga and by the end develops a bond with it.
By the time of the Season 3 episode "Battle for the Pride Lands", Ono and the rest of the Lion Guard have been fighting the Outlanders who serve Scar for a while and are now teenagers. Ono participates in the final battle against Scar's forces but during the final confrontation at the volcano, Ono saves Bunga from falling into the fire after Ushari tried to push him though the smoke causes him to lose his eyesight in the process.
In 'The Harmattan,' while travelling to the Tree of Life alongside the rest of the guard for healing Ono notices that Makucha is planning on throwing them off the side of the cliff and manages to alert the Guard in time before he successfully deceives them. Throughout the rest of the series, Ono follows the Guard to the Tree of Life for Kion's healing and his own. When they get there, Ono's healing from the queen is quick and successful though Ono's sight will never be what it once was. Despite that, Ono has come to terms with his new position. He judges the battle of the Lion Guard's in the final episode and when Kion loses, he returns alongside the Guard to the Tree of Life and is last seen at Kion's wedding.
Trivia[]
- Ono was the Keenest of Sight in The Lion Guard until his eyesight was impaired, in which case Anga replaces him as such, and he held a new position: becoming the Smartest of the group.
