| ~ Ophilia to her sister Lianna, before departing for the pilgrimage |
Ophilia Clement is one of the eight heroes of Octopath Traveler. She is a cleric at the Church of Flamesgrace, and one of the guardians of the sacred flame. She was orphaned at a young age and adopted by the Archbishop Josef and became Lianna's adoptive sister in the process. Although Lianna was initially chosen to deliver the sacred flame on a pilgrimage journey, the Archbishop fell gravely ill and she seemed too fearful for his life to carry on; so Ophilia took over in her stead. Over her journey however, the Archbishop dies and Lianna (who was deceived by the mysterious merchant Matthias) began to betray Ophilia and abandon her duties, thinking she could resurrect her father. Lianna was later proven wrong and felt ashamed of herself, but her adoptive sister forgave her. Ophilia is later revealed to be one of the eight chosen ones to face against the Fallen One.
She is voiced by Ai Kayano in the Japanese version, and by Cristina Valenzuela in the English version.
Personality[]
Ophilia is a very polite and kind person, being the most willing of the eight protagonists to help others in need. Likewise, she is very empathic towards young Emil and his friends because she knows first-hand how tough it can be to befriend others. However, her biggest flaw is her utter lack of self-confidence, believing she is not worthy to call Archbishop Josef her father because she is "only" his foster daughter while Lianna is his trueborn one. She learns to overcome this flaw throughout her journey. Her own kindness can sometimes backfire as she can be too quick to trust others, which makes her a target for those with manipulative tendencies. This is best demonstrated when she was deceived by one of Matthias' believers in the fourth chapter of her story, who lied to her about her child being sick, which results in Ophilia being ambushed and imprisoned by more of Matthias' believers.
Abilities[]
Ophilia is a wise and noble cleric renowned at Flamesgrace. She is quite skilled at teaching others about the joys of life as well as possessing great social skills and kindness. In addition to her kind-heartedness and spiritual knowledge, she is surprisingly skilled in combat as shown when she bested the wolf Hróðvitnir, saved villages from cultists, and even defeated the immortal villain Matthias.
History[]
It is time for the "Kindling," a holy pilgrimage in which an emissary from the cathedral uses an Ember to re-ignite the Sacred Flames of various churches across the land. Archbishop Josef, who performed the most recent Kindling 20 years ago, comes down with a mysterious, life-threatening illness. Lianna was meant to follow in his footsteps, but Ophilia takes on the task so Lianna can stay with her father. She is aided by Mattias, a merchant who had planned to sell traveling supplies to Lianna. Leaving Flamesgrace and the Frostlands behind, she sets out on her pilgrimage.
Ophilia reaches Saintsbridge in the Riverlands, her first destination on her Kindling. While in town, she witnesses young children arguing because one of them lost a brooch, which had belonged to another's now-deceased mom. In trying to help them reconcile, Ophilia must rescue them from a forest beast.
Ophilia reaches Goldshore in the Coastlands, the second destination on her Kindling, where she encounters a young boy that's worried he angered the local Bishop. It transpires that the boy had delivered a ransom note, as someone had kidnapped the Bishop's daughter, and will only give her back in exchange for the Ember. Ophilia deals with the matter herself and successfully rescues the girl. However, soon after her return, Lianna shows up and informs Ophilia that their father has passed away. Ophilia passes out as a result of a sleeping draught Lianna slipped into her drink, enabling Lianna to steal the Ember in cooperation with a hooded figure.
Ophilia, having heard where Lianna plans to take the Ember before falling asleep, chases her to Wispermill in the Flatlands. Ophilia is captured by the villagers, who swear allegiance not to Aelfric and his Church of the Sacred Flame, but to a "Savior" who plans to help them. Lianna, visiting Ophilia in gaol, says that the Savior is planning to resurrect Josef, and frees Ophilia on the condition that she leave town and not interfere. The Savior is revealed to be Mattias; he has plans to resurrect Galdera, and he needs the willing cooperation (and lives) of the citizens of Wispermill to do it. Ophilia convinces Lianna not to help him by reminding her of a lesson their father taught them when they were children, and Mattias reveals he was the one who poisoned Josef. Ophilia defeats Mattias and finishes her pilgrimage, but the last and most important step in her journey is to cheer up Lianna, as her sister did when Ophilia was first been adopted by Josef.
