Osamu Dazai (in Japanese: 太宰治, Dazai Osamu) is the deuteragonist of the Bungo Stray Dogs franchise.
He is a member of the Armed Detective Agency and an former executive of the underworld organization, the Port Mafia. He is based off of the famous Japanese author with the same name.
He is voiced by Mamoru Miyano (who voices Tamaki Suoh from Ouran High School Host Club and Amai Mask from One Punch Man) in the Japanese version and Kaiji Tang (who voices Satoru Gojo from Jujutsu Kaisen, Sanemi Shinazugawa from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, and Aren Kuboysau from The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.: Reawakened) in the English version.
Appearance[]
Dazai is a 22-year old man with a taller stature and fair skin. He is always seen wearing bandages wrapped on his body from the neck down. As a member of the Armed Detective Agency, he wears a long, sand-colored trench coat; underneath, he wears a blue dress shirt and a bolo tie with a teal pendant, black vest, beige pants, and dark brown shoes.
As a Port Mafia executive, Dazai wore a long black trench coat, overlapping his black mafioso suit. Prior to Odasaku's death, he had his right eye covered with a bandage) and a patch on his left cheek.
During the Yokohama fog incident, he wore a white long trench coat with a white suit and golden tie, and the left side of his hair was combed sideways.
After being arrested by the Hunting Dogs, Dazai is currently wearing white prison clothes.
Personality[]
Dazai is a very complex man, as his motives are almost never revealed to anyone unless he decides to reveal them. His former subordinate, Ryunosuke Akutagawa stated that trying to understand Dazai and his intentions is hard work. The only person who was able to come close to understanding his true personality was his best friend Sakunosuke Oda, who realized that regardless if Dazai is a person who kill people or a person who saves people, he will never get rid of the loneliness inside of him.
One of the most noticeable things about Dazai is how cheerful and witty he acts around others. His suicide attempts are always played for as jokes in the series, when in reality, he is a very depressed person deep down who doesn't see any value in living.
Despite being nihilistic and suicidal, Dazai seems to hate it when others feel the same depression he does (especially after leaving the Port Mafia). When Atsushi was kicked out of his orphanage and was beating himself up about being worthless and that he'd be better of being eaten by a tiger, Dazai felt sympathetic and decided to recruit him in the ADA. It shows that Dazai; although a depressed man himself, is someone who doesn't want another person to be depressed and be hard on themselves.
During his time in the Mafia, Dazai was a cold and sinister person who didn't mind getting blood on his hands. There was a saying that went around in the Port Mafia, "The greatest misfortune for Dazai's enemies is that they are Dazai's enemies.", and that he was born to be a mafioso. He was a strategic opponent who was always one step ahead of his enemies. That was shown when he was able to lure in the members of a criminal group Mimic into a trap. He was also very good at interrogating his enemies through torture.
Upon joining the Armed Detective Agency, Dazai is more of a silly guy who acts lazy and usually plays dumb with others. His partner Doppo Kunikida would always scold him for not being productive. Despite that, he has shown that he is more than meets the eye and has a sharp mind, he was able to come to the conclusion after logical thinking that Atsushi was the were-tiger. Next to Ranpo, Dazai is known to have the sharpest mind in the ADA.
Although he is more lighthearted in the detective agency, he still keeps parts of his dark personality with him. Dazai wouldn't mind using dirty means to get a task done, such as when he deactivated Ango Sakaguchi's airbag in his car for him to get injured in a car crash, just so he could get him to corporate in exchange for recovery.
Regardless, Dazai cares for his comrades and is willing to do pretty much anything for them. He even planned to get locked up in prison just so he can prevent Fyodor (who was in the same prison) and the rest of the Decay of the Angel from destroying the Armed Detective Agency.
Biography[]
One night at 14 years old, Dazai was taken in by Ogai Mori after a suicide attempt. On the same night, Mori killed the Port Mafia boss and made a cover story that the boss died of illness, having Dazai be the witness to that fact.
The two of them developed a simple and casual relationship. Mori planned on raising Dazai to be his right-handed man. Originally assuming that he and Dazai were alike, Mori quickly learns that the boy was a lot smarter than he believed.
Ability[]
No Longer Human - Dazai's ability allows him to nullify others' abilities on contact. It relies on skin contact and is always active. As such, he can nullify any ability even while restrained as soon as it touches him. However, it is ineffective on anyone with a non-ability such as Ranpo with his Ultra-Deduction.
Skills[]
High-Level Intelligence - Dazai's most primary skill in the Agency and the Port Mafia was his intelligence, he plays his cards right in any situation and is able to predict a lot of outcomes. His intellect is rivaled by Fyodor Dostoevsky, an avatar of cunning who sees Dazai to be quite identical to him. Ranpo even acknowledges how smart Dazai is, comparing Fyodor's high level of intelligence to Dazai's.
