Oscar the Grouch (born June 1, 1939) is a major character in the Sesame Street franchise.
He always lives up to the species he is, a grouch, who is miserable, pessimistic, unhygienic, rude, and just plain grouchy. He is the main antagonist from 1969 to 1990, one of the supporting characters from 1991 to 2005 and one of the main protagonists from 2006 to present. Like Big Bird, he was portrayed by the late Caroll Spinney, the late Jim Henson and currently performed by Eric Jacobson. In the Japanese dub from the series, he was voiced by Tōru Ōkawa.
Biography[]
Past[]
Oscar was born on June 1, 1939, to Pop and Oscarina Grouch in the neighborhood of Grouch Land.
His infancy is a bit of a mystery: a woman in the Christmas special claims that Oscar was a happy baby, who was well-known, never whined, and somehow even offered money in exchange for Christmas trash. However, he maintains that he was grouchy ever since he was a baby, and it's unclear who's right.
As a child, he would have a sibling rivalry with his sister Bunny and would get punished by his mother by having his mouth washed out with ice cream.
Oscar's fondest memory was him bringing his first trash can in his kindergarten class.
He had an older brother named Ernest, whom he despised due to him being the favorite kid in the family. He was given a tattered sneaker when he was born, which he claimed was a gift from his mother. Some or his childhood implies; he grew up in a small house (not the trash can that he currently lives). His father abandoned and left his family when he was a kid, implying he has some abandonment issues. Oscar explains that he once told his son that if he was messy, fussy, and loved trash, he'd grow up to be just like him.
Oscar grew up with Felix The Grouch, who he got along with. In high school, Oscar attended Miss Blechman's english class who often wrote made him write his name in a chalkboard one hundred times, when he was acting grouchy. She claimed that Oscar was the most rotten kid in her class. Oscar never attended college, but always had a desire to go to Putrid University (P.U.) which he would graduate online years later, when he took a Grouchology class.
In 1963, Local con-artist, Mr. Huxley moved into Grouch-land; whom Oscar apparently didn’t like because he owed him money. Oscar promised to leave there to start a new life not trusting Huxley. He left his home; and went out looking for a new house. He spent a few months in Manhatten and Queens moving from place to place and spending some time sleeping in a Subway train station. He was backstage at the time, Grass Roots played in 1968.
He eventually found Sesame Street in early January, 1969, where he found a trash can and decided to live there. This was the last time he had seen Ernest in years. Last place he saw him prior to his visit in Sesame Street, was in his fathers funeral.
Oscar lives in a trash can between Big Bird's nest and 123 Sesame Street building; as of Season 46, his trash can has relocated to a dumpster unit outside the left windows of 123 Sesame Street, and has the ability to pop up in different trash receptacles. He has also been the longtime arch-rival of Big Bird and Elmo. Oscar has had many pets, but his closest companion is a worm Slimey. He also has a girlfriend, a grouch named Grundgetta although a romantic relationship between two grouches is understandably rocky. Grundgetta usually calls him Oskie while he occasionally calls her Grungie. Telly and Elmo both consider Oscar to be a close friend, although Oscar disputes this since Telly and Elmo are the two monsters that Oscar doesn't like at all. However, Oscar reluctantly confirmed in Grouchland that Elmo was indeed his friend.
