Hero Overview

Otto: I'm sorry to have to be the one to disappoint you. But a friend of mine asked me for some help. I realize it's only a small role, but I've set out to play it.
Garfiel: What's this about?
Otto: In truth, I had planned to talk things over with you here.
[...] However, I really wasn't expecting everything that happened this morning with Miss Emilia. That being said, all kinds of conspiratorial plans have been laid out already. So now that the host of the banquet is away, how'd you like to play the host instead?
~ Otto confronting Garfiel Tinzel.

Otto Suwen is a major character in the 2014 Japanese dark fantasy light novel series Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World and its 2014 manga & 2016 anime television series adaptations of the same name, and a cameo character in the 2022 non-canon comedy crossover anime film Isekai Quartet: The Movie – Another World.

Otto Suwen was a young man active in the Kingdom of Lugunica whose lineage consisted of many merchants. Otto himself was a merchant, although he wasn't especially successful. Eventually he became allied with the Emilia Camp, a political party attempting to place the half-elf Emilia on the throne of Lugunica.

Otto is voiced by Kōhei Amasaki in the Japanese version of the anime adaptation and by Zach Aguilar in the English version. Kimlinh Tran voiced Otto as a child in English. Amasaki's other heroic roles include Neito Monoma in My Hero Academia, Takaki Uno in Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans, and Yashamaru Kurama in Samurai Showdown. Aguilar's other heroic roles include Tanjiro Kamado in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Genos in One Punch Man, Byleth in Fire Emblem, Koichi Hirose in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Sieg in Fate/Apocrypha, Takaki Uno in Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans, Calem in Pokémon Masters, and Slaine Troyard in Aldnoah.Zero.

History[]

Otto Suwen was born into a merchant family in Pictat, a major city in the Dragonfriend Kingdom of Lugunica. His father was the head of the Suwen Trading Company, a business that had been run by the Suwens for generations. He was bestowed a Divine Protection at birth that allowed him to comprehend the speech of animals. However, as the the blessing was unrefined, Otto couldn't make out the words of creatures, and as such was plagued by a constant and insufferable chattering in his ears. The noises were so powerful that Otto could not make out the voices of the people around him, and as such was essentially deaf. His parents, failing to understand his power, had their infant son assessed by various healers, who also failed to comprehend the child's blessing. Losing hope a bit, Otto's parents began to devote more time to Oslo and Regin, although Suwen never resented any of his family members for their neglect.

Eventually, Oslo began teaching Otto how to read and write, as he believed that his brother would be able to communicate that way. As he couldn't comprehend the sounds of the words he was learning, it took Otto ten times longer to learn than other members of his age group. Regardless, he diligently set about the task of studying until one day little Otto was able to write a note of gratitude to his parents for always taking care of him. Upon reading their son's note, his parents wept tears of joy. Otto, happy that he could finally convey his feelings, joined in on the sobbing of his parents. Not long after conveying his feelings, Otto began to realize that the incomprehensible chatter around him had rhyme and rhythm. By the age of eight, Otto was finally able to separate the chattering noises from human words, allowing him to properly communicate for the first time ever.

Powers & Abilities[]

  • Zoolingualism: Otto Suwen was one of the lucky few to possess a useful Divine Protection. A Divine Protection was a blessing of sorts bestowed upon a person at birth by the mysterious source of the world's magic. Depending on the person, the ability of the blessing bequeathed by a Protection differed. It was incredibly uncommon to be born with a Divine Protection, and rarer still to be born with a useful and/or unique one. Suwen was one of the lucky few to have a truly special blessing. Otto's blessing allowed him to communicate with creatures, allowing him to comprehend their speech. In his formative years, the words of creatures were incomprehensible to Otto, who had no explanation for the constant chattering he heard. However, as time went on, he began to understand more and more of what the animals were trying to say until he eventually fully understood. He also learnt to block his power to a certain extent, giving himself reprieves from the constant background noises. To quickly learned that openly communing with creatures in public was a bad idea, as strangers saw Otto's conversations as suspicious one-sided ramblings. Although he was unable to control the actions of creatures, he was able to make them do what he wanted if they themselves wanted to. By communicating with the birds and the insects always hidden from view, Suwen possessed a sort of intelligence network that could tell him about circumstances happening far away.
  • Magic: Otto Suwen, due to tutoring he received as the son of a merchant, had the capability to use magical energy known as mana that he naturally absorbed into his body to cast spells. Most people, including Otto, were only able to use magic spells from one of the six magical elements. Suwen was connected to the element of earth, which focused on directing internal forces rather than power found in the environment.
    • Geokinesis: Using earth mana, Suwen could telekinetically shape and direct large amounts of earth.
