Ottoway is the main character from the movie The Grey. He continues to see flashbacks of his father and his wife who died. He meant to kill himself, and in the end after all the others died he died fighting and killing the alpha wolf with him, hence the quote. "Live on this day. Die on this die."

John Ottway works in Alaska as a marksman for an underground oil company, killing wolves that attack the drillers. On his last day on the job, he shoots the last one. That evening, Ottway writes a suicidal letter to his wife, Ana, explaining that he is about to kill himself. He hears a distant wolf howl and doesn't follow through.
