~ Jake Chambers calling to Oy, resulting in the decision of his name |
Oy is one of the main protagonists of the the The Dark Tower series. He was described to be a "Billy-Bumbler", a creature native to Roland's realm and has remarkable intelligence compared to the rest of his kin.
He first appears as a major protagonist in the third book The Waste Lands where he is found by Jake Chambers some time after his arrival. Oy is capable of mimicking speech, often spelling single words without the first letter on said word which when called "boy" by Jake, resulted in him replying with "Oy". The two developed a close bond and eventually, he was able to join Roland in his adventures. After the third book, he is a major protagonist for the rest of the series.
Appearence[]
Oy is a billy-bumbler, an animal native in Roland's realm. The species has been described as a combination of badger, raccoon, and dog or as a combination raccoon and woodchuck, with a little dachshund thrown in. These creatures have the ability to speak, oftentimes with a deep and low voice.
Oy himself resembles his kin with a main feature of his eyes which has been described as "large, bright, intelligent, gold-ringed eyes". Oddly enough, he was also disproportionately long in length. His fur is described to be black with grey stripes while his tail is corkscrew shaped and notably furry.
Biography[]
Past[]
During an unknown time in the past, Oy was kicked out of his pack and left to wander the waste lands on his own. This was presumably due to his intelligence or his aptitude for mimicry though he managed to survive just fine until he was found by the ka-tet.
The Waste Lands[]
While wandering around, Oy encounters Roland Deschain's group which prompted Jake Chambers to call him. The billy-bumbler followed suit, responding with the word "Oy" which would later be his name throughout the series. With that, he was then part of the team as they arrived at the city of Lud, once ancient and high tech though now a war-riddled place between two factions. While crossing a decaying bridge, the travelers wound up in an accident and while they survived, they ended up losing Jake to a gangster from the "Grays" faction named Gasher.
Roland decides to only take Oy with him to rescue Jake, having to traverse a labyrinth in the sewers until they finally find the place the teenager was being brought to, the lair of the Tick-Tock Man. The gunslinger and his companion broke in to the layer and in the chaos, Jake successfully shoots down the Tick-Tock Man though unfortunately, he ends up surviving.
Once Jake is back, the group continue their journey, arriving at an abandoned monorail. Unfortunately the AI running the place had gone insane, threatening to run them off the tracks unless they can beat it in a riddle contest. As they do so, they were able to see the outside world. A horrid apocalyptic place leading to a place called Topeka.
Wizard and Glass[]
In an attempt to beat the AI, Eddie tells it some childish jokes, befuddling the AI to the point of short-circuiting. Exiting the monorail, they soon discovered that Topeka was actually the same one as the Kansas city Topeka, taking place in a similar universe as another of Stephen King's work. After passing through a bunch of references, they decide to take a break in which Roland reveals more details of the past.
After going through the flashback, the group decide to continue their journey, discovering a green tinted town reminiscent of the Emerald City from Wizard of Oz. In one of the castles they encounter "the wizard" who was actually just a disguised Flagg. All around a loud voice belonging to the surviving Tick-Tock Man threatens the group, trying to get them to turn away.
This fails and he was quickly killed off, followed by the group turning on Flagg. After an unsuccessful shootout, Flagg managed to escape and leave behind a mirror which reveals the day when Roland killed his mother. Despite knowing the fates of people close to the gunslinger, the group still goes along with him, continuing their journey forward.
The Wind Through the Keyhole[]
During their journey, Roland and his group had to take cover from a depression, having been warned by an elderly ferryman. During their cover, the gunslinger decides to reveal more details of his past. After a long-winded story of his past adventures against another horrific foe, the depression eventually ended and the group can continue their journey.
Wolves of the Calla[]
After escaping the depression, Eddie and Jake are sent to New York with the rest of the travelers getting followed by a group of citizens from a village. Their leader who is a character from another of Stephen King's book, under the name of Father Callahan, explains their need for assistance against a group of wolves who engage in kidnapping and mutating children twins.
Said leader ended up explaining how he had gotten to this place after the many crossover chapters he went through, he shows the travelers an evil magic ball which had been given by Flagg himself. The ball, being named Black Thirteen, is something Roland could recognize, figuring that it was what had taken Eddie and Jake from their companions. They decide to use said ball to join their separated companions, arriving to New York and finding said companions.
They ended up explaining what they had been doing while trapped in New York, meeting an old enemy, the mob boss that had kidnapped Eddie's brother and is now hunting down a friend they had made in this place. Oy stayed behind as Roland and Eddie battles Balazar's goons and secure their friend. After the two came back, they decide to take a break and plan for their battle against the wolves.
During this time, the group noticed Susannah's odd behavior which had something to do with the ritual she and Eddie did to bring Jake into their realm and stop Roland's madness. As it turns out, the lady of shadows had been impregnated by a demon. She didn't mind it, having come to terms with this revelation and even giving a name to it, Mia.
With their planning finished, the travelers begin their preparation while Jake goes off to a military outpost where he discovers a conspiracy. Some time after Roland and Eddie deal with the issue, the former explains what he had heard from a conversation to his team, the reveal that the wolves were actually robots.
However this revelation was far worse as these wolves have the power of blatant referencing and immunity to copyright. They wear green hoods meant to resemble Dr. Doom and wield lightsabers from Star Wars. At a range they begin attacking with flying winged killer orbs resembling Golden Snitches from the Harry Potter series.
The travelers along with some warriors were able to take down the wolves with little casualties all while the children remain safe. Unfortunately after this battle, Mia ended up taking over Susannah's body and ran off with the other travelers failing to follow her. Worse still, the village's leader ended up discovering himself and his world to be from a book, written by Stephen King.
Song of Susannah[]
During their attempt at chasing Susannah down, the travelers ended up being separated with Jake and Oy remaining in the realm with the village leader, Father Callahan. The three followed Susannah to New York 1999 where she had been taken while also hiding the evil black ball, Black Thirteen, in a locker where it will be buried in the real world due to a disaster.
With that issue finished, the three prepare an assault on the place where Susannah is being taken captive by vampire soldiers of the Crimson King. For some reason, Jake had a feeling of dread on whether or not this attack will be successful. Despite this however, he still broke in along with his teammates, their weapons raised.
The Dark Tower[]
During their attack, Father Callahan was swarmed by the vampires, forcing him to kill himself instead of getting infected. His sacrifice allowed Oy and Jake to successfully take out all the vampires and survive the ordeal though in the end, they failed to prevent the birth of Mordred Deschain. Susannah managed to escape the horrifying monster, meeting with Oy and Jake back at the place they had been fighting at.
While taking a break, they are met by Roland and Eddie who had survived their ordeals. The group travel to Thunderclap in an attempt to find and free a group of psychics who are attempting to break beams supporting the Dark Tower. They meet a few of Roland's old friends and other characters from Stephen King's other works. During a fight to free the psychics, Eddie ended up getting injured severely due to a bullet to the eye. His group spent what little time they had to stay by his side and listen to his final words. Despite how painful it was, they had to go on once he died as they didn't have the time to mourn.
Jumping to 1999, Roland and Jake attempt to save Stephen King from the car accident he will suffer though this ends with the death of the latter. The gunslinger was heartbroken by this event, taking his time to bury Jake though he eventually snaps out of it and goes back to Oy. After going through freezing wastelands and avoiding a horrific monster, they ended up being tangled up with a particular monster under the name Dandelo in their attempt to save an imprisoned man.
Dandelo feeds on laughter which is what prompts him to tell jokes to the group that were surprisingly effective. Even Roland who is normally dry and unemotive was made to laugh by the monster's joke which allowed him to slowly drain them of their life. Thankfully, Stephen King was able to snap Susannah out of it with some written in hints, allowing her to kill off Dandelo.
The imprisoned man, another character from Stephen King's written works with the name Patrick Danville, had the ability to bring life to his drawings. At this point, the travelers had been getting closer to the Dark Tower which is when Susannah decided that Roland needed to finish his journey without her. With a sad goodbye, she enters a doorway created by Patrick, leading her to a new realm where Eddie and Jake are still alive with various changes.
Death[]
As the gunslinger continues his journey, he finally encounters his son. They engaged in a vicious battle in which Oy ended up having to attack the gunslinger's son, giving him time to shoot Mordred dead. Unfortunately, the billy-bumbler was impaled into a tree branch, killing him. Before his death, he called out Roland's name before dying in peace.
Based on the writing after Susannah's arrival in the new world, there will be a new Oy in a more canine form there, presumably having the same amount of memories on his journey as everyone else.
Powers and Abilities[]
Roland's realm is filled with supernatural beings and occurrences, watched over by god-like entities with different desires and goals. As such, supernatural abilities and skills aren't uncommon for many of the denizens of this realm which includes Oy.
Powers[]
- Telepathy: Oy has telepathic abilities which helps him in communicating with others due to his limited speech and disturbing voice. He mostly uses it to talk with Jake who can respond to him the same way
- Mind Swapping: Occasionally, Oy and Jake would agree to switch bodies, the former being the one to initiate it. They have used it to get themselves out of trouble such as during the shootout at Dixie Pig. The billy-bumbler learned some behaviors from being in a human body, such as performing a peculiar bow as a self-introduction
- Enhanced Senses: Being an animal, Oy possesses enhanced hearing and smell, being able to hear Mordred's presence despite his stealthy approach and track down Jake in a sewer
Abilities[]
- Marksmanship: When in possession of Jake's body, Oy is still capable of using his arsenal though he does not use it often
- Mimicry: Oy learns words and sentences via listening and repeating conversations of people around him, often saying those same words and sentences later when convenient
