Pakku is a supporting character in Netflix's live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender, which is based on the Nickelodeon 2005-2008 animated series of the same name.

He is played by A Martinez.

History[]

Background[]

Pakku was born in Anga Qel’a, the Northern Water Tribe and most of his early life is unknown. Eventually, Pakku became one of The Northern Water Tribe's best warriors and waterbending masters, earning his place as one of Chief Arnook 's most trusted advisors.

By the time of the series, he was teaching several students. However, Pakku followed his firm beliefs that women were only allowed to learn the healing aspect of Waterbending.

Season 1[]

The North[]

Pakku joins Chief Arnook, Princess Yue, and Hahn as they greet Team Avatar when they reach the North Pole. After greeting and acknowledging Sokka and Katara, Arnook introduced Yue and Pakku to the kids. Katara seemed elated to learn that Pakku was a waterbending master. Relying on Kyoshi's vision to him, Aang reveals to the tribe's leaders that he and his traveling companions came to warn them the Fire Nation is planning an attack on their city. However, Arnook told the young Avatar their scouts picked up a Fire Nation fleet steaming coming their way. The tribe held a feast in honor of the Avatar's arrival, where Pakku walked over to Katara and Aang, inviting her for a training session with Yagoda. The next morning, Pakku, Arnook, and Hahn joined Sokka and Aang. Upon hearing that Aang was still having trouble with his abilities, Pakku and Arnook feared they couldn't rely on Aang's inability and insecurities.

A few moments later, Katara learned from Yagoda that women were only allowed to perform the healing aspect of Waterbending. She approached Pakku and asked what her battle position was going to be; however, Pakku told Katara that women aren't allowed to fight in combat and refused to let her. After getting encouragement from Sokka, Katara challenged Pakku to fight her. He initially refused but Katara goads him to when she whips him with water. During the duel, Pakku gains the upper hand and traps Katara in an ice casing. while he acknowledges her skills, Pakku still refuses to let Katara fight. However, he looked back and watched two of his students praising Katara for her fighting skills. At that moment, ash and snow start falling from the sky and Team Avatar realizes the Fire Nation is here.

Legends[]

Right before the siege of the North, Katara tries convincing Pakku to give women a chance to fight but the waterbending master still refuses. To his surprise, Pakku sees that Katara rallied all the other women, who won't give up Anga Qel’a without a fight. Yagoda scolded him for being an old fool and proved that there wasn't going to be a future if he relied on their traditions. Pakku is moved by the women's dedication to defend their home and tells them that the Western side of the wall needs reinforcements. He also sends two of his students to receive further instruction from Katara.

During the Siege of the North, Pakku lost many of his fellow tribesmen and women to Fire Nation soldiers. During the middle of the battle, the Moon Spirit Tui was taken captive by Admiral Zhao, causing the Moon and the sky to turn red. After the admiral succeeded in stabbing Tui with Kuruk's dagger, her death caused a lunar eclipse and cutting Pakku off from his waterbending. Aang entered the Avatar state and merged with La, the Ocean spirit and together they became Koizilla. which Pakku and the other tribe members witnessed.

To save Aang and the Spirits, Princess Yue sacrificed her own life to restore Tui and became the new Moon Spirit. The next morning, Pakku and Katara stood side by side and looked on at the carnage left in the Fire Nation. During the Battle, Pakku lost his comrades, including his student and his ally Hahn. He said a new generation of waterbenders was needed and offered Katara a place in the North Water tribe to rebuild. However, she refused because Aang still needed a waterbending master. Pakku acknowledged Katara as a true warrior, appointed her as the Avatar's waterbending master, and gave her the waters from the Spirit Oasis in case she needed them shortly.

Personality[]

Most of Pakku's jerkish traits from his first appearance are toned down for the series. However, Pakku still holds his tribe's sexist traditions and customs, such as not allowing Katara or other women in combat. Still, the waterbending master isn't as strict or arrogant as his cartoon counterpart and just follows the customs and traditions Pakku is aware of. However, after seeing Katara's waterbending, he still acknowledged that she was a great bender but he still wouldn't let her fight. Shortly before the siege took place, Pakku initially turned down Katara's offer to let the women fight and protect Anga Qel’a until Yagoda stood up to him.

After the Battle, Pakku realizes that it's time for a change, which is something that the water element taught him. During his conversation with Katara, Pakku acknowledged that women have more potential in waterbending and hoped that a new generation of waterbenders would emerge. Despite their hardships and losses, Pakku knows that it will take time but the Water Tribes will rebuild and come out stronger. He also tells Katara that it's time for a new generation to emerge, both men and women.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Waterbending: Pakku is a waterbending master and is considered one of the best of his generation. His abilities were rivaled by Katara, who managed to keep up with Pakku, much to his surprise. Pakku can also bend ice and snow, seeing as he trapped Katara in an ice casing when their duel reached its conclusion.
  • Combat: As A skilled Waterbender and warrior, Pakku is well versed in physical combat. He was able to block some of Katara's attacks and narrowly evade Katara's ice disks.

Weaknesses[]

  • Eclipse: During a lunar eclipse, Pakku would lose his ability to bend because the Moon Graves them their waterbending. This is shown when Admiral Zhao kills the Moon Spirit and causes a lunar eclipse that cuts Pakku off from his waterbending. However, Tui was restored when she was given her life force from Princess Yue, whose sacrifice returned to the moon to the sky and restored Pakku's bending.

Trivia[]

  • Kanna and Pakku's relationship and the significance of Katara's necklace that Pakku made for her is adapted out of the first season.
