Bowser, often nicknamed Paper Bowser, is the main antagonist of the Paper Mario series. However much like his mainstream version, Paper Bowser has had heroic roles in certain games such as The Thousand Year Door searching for Crystal Stars, Super Paper Mario when he teamed up with Paper Mario to stop Count Bleck and was one of the two extra heroes of Paper Mario: The Origami King (alongside Paper Luigi). Much like his original counterpart he is voiced by Kenny James.
He is somewhat different from his mainstream counterpart and is more comical and incompetent in appearance, also being more open to help Mario and his friends. He is also more comedic at times and cares a lot about his minions. If a villain harms his army he will defend them with his last breath. While he has a short fuse, meaning he explodes in rage over slight inconveniences, arrogant and egotistical at times, he happens to display a very rare moment of kindness, particularly towards Olivia, whom he encourages whenever she is in conflict about her confrontation with King Olly.
- In The Thousand Year Door he unintentionally saves Princess Peach from being tortured by Sir Grodus.
- Bowser is one of the Four Heroes in the Light Prognosticus, so he takes part in saving the multiverse from Count Bleck and later Dimentio. It may be for selfish reasons, but it does not change heroism.
- Bowser is a major supporting character in Paper Mario: The Origami King where he is stapled into the form of a tiny box for most of the game. Upon the death of the Stapler, he assumes his true form and aids Mario and Olivia confront King Olly. Once King Olly folds himself into a larger form during the final battle, Bowser is folded into the gigantic Mega Bowser and proves instrumental in the defeat of King Olly's second form, although the tyrant's final form sends him flying off into the abyss though he survives. Once King Olly is defeated and peace is restored, there is an apparent ceasefire of tensions between the Bowser and Mushroom Kingdom, as Bowser and his minions join in the Origami Festival.
- Paper Mario: The Origami King is the first and only Paper Mario game so far where Bowser is never fought as a game boss at all.
