Remember, Papyrus, The strength of the Sword of Horus will always be equal to your courage.
~ Papyrus reminding himself when battling supernatural forces.

Papyrus is the titular protagonist of the 1998 series of the same name. He is the friend of Princess Théti as well as possessor of the magic sword which was given to him.

Background[]

Papyrus was originally a simple fisherman, until a mission was bestowed upon him; and that is to stop Seth from destroying Egypt. Papyrus’s origins are initially foreshadowed in the first episodes. At one point, it was revealed that he is the last descendant of King Tutankhamun.

This is unknown whether King Tut is his ancestor or rather a direct parent of Papyrus. The latter was hid in a papyrus plantation due to having cursed blood of King Akhenaten, and as a result this had to be kept secret. He was adopted by fishermen after being found in the plantation.

Character[]

Appearance[]

Papyrus is presented as a teenaged fisherman with bronze skin, dark hair, a gold pectoral around his neck (which was given by the Princess as royal gratitude), two gold bangs on each forearm, a scabbard stretching from around his right shoulder to the back, and a white loincloth wrapped around his waist.

Personality[]

Papyrus is a very modest and well-meaning person, as shown many times through interactions with his friends and townspeople. Unlike many heroes, however, Papyrus is not a fan of venturing and cherishes a relaxed life where he can stay in one place. He is usually seen fishing or hanging out with his friends.

Papyrus is rather irritable, though not as on the level as Theti. During the course of the series, Papyrus is initially somewhat naive and would help anyone as he believes it would fulfill his heroic “requirements”. Though this usually ends with him falling into a trap by inadvertently complying with Seth’s plots, and having other protagonists such as Théti rescue him. However as the series progresses, Papyrus is shown to have developed more judgement. But this is subsequently linked with him being an insecure individual due to his many misadventures with Seth’s plots. This is also true when he begins to question what is and isn’t true.

However, Papyrus does act on impulse sometimes and can act irrationally. On one occasion, he was unable to forgive Pharaoh Merenre for an incident involving a village many years ago. Even going far as to renounce his entire mission and abandon his friends. Another example being refusing to listen to his friends when they confront him about a woman named Mika.

Despite all this, Papyrus does care about his friends and will never hesitate to help anyone in need of saving.

Powers/skills[]

  • Sword of Horus - Papyrus is able to utilize his magical sword for defeating evil entities, as well as for self defense. It is wielded just as any sword would be, though is responds with magical powers depending on how much courage Papyrus possesses.
  • Logical reasoning - Papyrus is guided by reason whether it be decision making or battling the forces of Seth.
  • Agility - Due to his petite stature, Papyrus is able to make subtle movements.

Weaknesses[]

  • Over-confidence - Papyrus sometimes becomes too confident that he loses self-focus, which can ultimately lead to his downfall, usually by falling into a trick.
  • Lack of physical strength - Papyrus does not naturally possess physical strength. But he is not frail and depends on using his head to get out of difficult situations.

Trivia[]

  • He is voiced by Alexis Tomassian And Martin Watier in the French dub. Though it is unknown who voiced him in the English dub.
