Park Yong-sik (박용식, Bag Yong-sig?), also known as Player 007, is a major character in season two of Netflix's survival thriller series Squid Game. He is portrayed by Yang Dong-geun (also known as YDG).

Biography[]

Background[]

Park Yong-sik was born during the final stages of the Korean War to Jang Geum-ja and her unnamed husband. As he grew older, Yong-sik developed reckless habits, becoming a compulsive gambler. In a desperate bid to fuel his addiction, he borrowed ₩100 million from a shady casino. Unable to repay the loan, he was threatened by creditors who warned they would take his organs if he didn’t settle the debt within a month. Fearing for his life, Yong-sik fled home and saw the Squid Game as his only chance to escape his dire situation.

Squid Game[]

Yong-sik wakes up in the Squid Game dormitory alongside other participants and unexpectedly reunites with his mother, Jang Geum-ja. She confronts him for joining the deadly contest, revealing that she entered the game herself to help pay off his debt. He insists she shouldn’t have taken such a risk for his sake. Throughout the games, they maintain a close bond and build friendships with fellow contestants, including Kim Young-mi, Cho Hyun-ju, and Seong Gi-hun, as well as others like Park Jung-bae, Oh Young-il, Kang Dae-ho, and Kim Jun-hee.

In the first game, "Red Light, Green Light," Yong-sik initially mocks Seong Gi-hun for warning others about the potential danger. However, after realizing the threat was real, he follows Gi-hun’s advice, allowing both him and his mother to survive the round. Afterward, he votes to leave the game at his mother’s urging.

When they return for the second game, Yong-sik and Jang Geum-ja team up with Kim Young-mi, Seon-nyeo, and Cho Hyun-ju to succeed. Following this, Yong-sik decides to stay in the competition, hoping to earn enough money to not only pay off the original debt but also another hidden one he hadn’t disclosed to his mother. Although she is initially upset, he explains his reasons, and they continue to work together.

After making it through the third game, "Mingle," they vote to leave again but are forced to remain when the vote results in a tie. Yong-sik and his mother later learn of Seong Gi-hun’s plan to revolt against the game’s staff. Though they choose to avoid the chaotic nighttime attack by Group O on Group X, they follow Seong’s advice to keep their distance and stay safe. By avoiding direct involvement in the rebellion, both manage to survive another night.
