Pat Butcher is a fictional character and primary protagonist of the BBC British soap opera EastEnders.

She debuted on 12th June 1986 and became one of the show's central protagonists for over two decades up until she was ultimately killed-off on 1st January 2012, after which Pat became the show's posthumous catalyst for the rest of the year onwards.

The character was famously portrayed by Pam St Clement throughout her duration on the show.

Biography

Pat Butcher first came to Albert Square, the market town of fictional East London borough Walford, in June 1986 and would go on to become one of the longest-standing residents in the area.

From then onwards, Pat has represented some of the show's biggest and most highly-prolific storylines to date over the next 25 years and six months of her time - most notably in her lifelong chemistry with romantic partner and lover Frank Butcher that saw the pair develop romantic feelings for each other, getting married, later divorcing, reconciling whilst getting remarried to their follow-up spouses, having an affair in 2000 that led to Frank's departure on the show that year, and having a short-lived reunion in 2005 before Frank eventually died just three years later.

The other major storylines surrounding Pat's story arc included the parentage of her youngest son Simon Wicks; clashing with her ex-husband Pete Beale over their divorce settlement; forming a close friendship with Pete's wife Kathy Beale; becoming a surrogate mother to Pete and Kathy's son Ian Beale for several decades; coping with a Christmas Day muder when she accidentally killed a young teenage girl in a road collision; disowning her eldest son David Wicks following his affair with Ian's first wife Cindy that led to the events of Ian's shooting; embarking on a long-running marriage with Frank's business partner Roy Evans that ended with his death in 2003; getting blamed by Roy's son Barry Evans for his father's death; developing a competitive rivalry and at times fellowship with her perceived frenemy Peggy Mitchell; having a longstanding feud with her villainous stepdaughter Janine Butcher; surviving an attempt on her life by her grandson Steven; sparking numerous companionships and other conflicts with several people; and finally being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer that ultimtately led to her eventual death on New Year's Day 2012 before the character's funeral later took place on 13th January 2012.

• Pam St Clement (the actress who played Pat Butcher) has received universal acclaim for her performance as Pat Butcher that she won and was nominated for countless awards in contribution to her role in EastEnders.
• Following the character's death on New Year's Day 2012 in the end, Pat reappeared in a concussion-related dream sequence revolving on Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) and his behalf for a Children in Need special on 14 November 2014. She later made a return as a hallucination for the death of her longtime frenemy Peggy Mitchell (Barbara Windsor) on 17 May 2016.
