|~ Patsey defying Edwin Epps.|
Patsey is the heroine from the treasured 2013 film 12 Years a Slave.
Patsey is a feisty, strong-willed slave who works under the thumb of her cruel master, Edwin Epps, who deems her to be an object. She is forced into labor, picking cotton from plants but is aided by our hero, Solomon Northup, who convinces her not to give in to despair. Patsey would repay Solomon's kindness in turn when she protected him from a furious and violent Epps after she had went to a neighboring plantation to obtain soap (having been forbidden from even washing herself by Epps' psychopathic wife) - she would proceed to get into a heated argument with Epps and finally stood up to his cruelty, reminding him that she proved him with more cotton than any other slave and that while he could take away her dignity and freedom she, at the very least, would be clean. Sadly Patsey was brutally punished by Epps to show his authority, whipping her near-to-death, he also forced Solomon to aid in the whipping and Patsey once again showed her deep love for Solomon as she proclaimed she would rather Solomon whip her (this was also her only means to defy Epps) : Solomon in turn warned Epps that God would punish him for his sins, while Epps laughed at the idea history would ultimately proved Solomon correct.. though tragically it would not be revealed in the film itself and the last the audience sees of Patsey is her fainting after Solomon is taken to the North to be set free once more. (in historical texts it is shown that Patsey would eventually earn freedom from Epps during the Civil War and thus at least lived the last portion of her life free from his torment - Epps and his wife would lose their plantation after the Civil War, becoming poor and ultimately dying of plague)
- Patsey is played by newcomer Lupita Nyong'o, who earned an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She also voices Maz Kanata in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
